Hiring Folks From Other Countries Question

Hey George.  what do you think of this article I read in the paper today.

Certain groups of foreign-trained workers will know within a year of applying for certification whether their training will allow them to work in Canada, the federal government said Monday.

Beginning in December 2010, foreign-trained architects, engineers, financial auditors and accountants, pharmacists and registered nurses will be among the groups that fall under the new framework, Minister of Human Resources Diane Finley said in Toronto.

Well let me tell ya.  First off it never ceases to amaze me when our powers that be get to thinking that these things can help our economy and is good for our country.  First off there is millions of folks that live right here now out of work.  There are lots of our own for that matter that have a lot of these qualities and can’t find work.  How about putting some of our own through training to do the job, as I bet most would only need a bit of upgrading to qualify.  Second thing is, if you look at all our pharmaceutical companies now, you will find way back somewhere that they are all owned and supplied by off shore countries.  Also just take a look at who is handing out the prescriptions now  a days.  Also take a look at our most of our doctors. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what is going on here.  What ever happened to; Made In Canada, or for that matter, Born and Educated  In Canada?  One has to remember as of years ago, you have to look after yourselves before you are any good to anyone else, selfish some say.  Yes it is, but that is  the correct way of doing things   So there you go.   Again My Opinion Only

First Snow Here In Port Loring Ontario

Well first day of any snow to speak of this morning. Started to come down yesterday around two in the afternoon and pretty well kept it up till this morning.  Today my weather station is calling for sunshine so we will see.  Didn’t get to much snow, maybe a couple inches, but enough to let a feller or gal know of what lays ahead.  Sure is pretty looking out though, with all our huge pines just drooping.  I got to say the first snow fall has a way of doing something to a feller.  If I didn’t have some things to do this morning I think I could just sit here and look out all day long.  On another note.  My lovely wife is cookin’ up some bacon and soon as it is finished on will go the farm fresh eggs cooked right in the bacon grease. Can’t be beat.   One thing I love, is my eggs, bacon too, I know it isn’t the best one could eat, but two or three times a week is fine I have found, that is if one doesn’t over do it with other greasy things.  The thing I am looking for though, is one of them old time toasters, where you put the toast in and flip the lid up and down manually. One lid on each side.  If anyone has one of them that they don’t want any-more, just let me know.  You can reach me at [email protected]   Have a great day and remember.  A day worth getting up too, is a day not to be taken for granted.    (By Me)

An Apple A Day

You know I got to thinking the  other day on how we kept up with our health, when the cold old days of winter hit us all.  Laura the lady of the house always said that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, adding, so eat your apple as there isn’t a doctor for miles.  And I did.  Seems to me back then I can’t ever remember having a cold or flu.   Things like that were unheard of for most parts.   Even today I can say that I haven’t had a cold or flu in over ten years and longer, now why is that some would ask, especially these days? Well other than eating right, washing my hands and never touching my face, and rinsing out my sinus’s when I get home from town, not much.   My favourite is a good old Empire apple. They are great for baking and in my eyes hold more cures for diseases than any other.  Well maybe one other and that would be the spy, which we don’t see much of any more. I would also like to mention here Laura’s way of telling whether the apples one buys is going to be really tasty.  She would always say if it hasn’t any blush on it, not meaning chemicals, they are not going to be very tasty.  What is blush.  Well blush is sort of a shading that is put there by good old mother nature and when wiped off, the apple will polish up to a brilliant shine.  That is what you want to be looking for in the stores, which you won’t find, as most stores coat the apples with a type of wax, which actually holds all the chemicals to the skin, which in turn, isn’t good for ya.  Way to get good apples is to seek out an apple tree that everyone has forgot about or find a farmer that doesn’t use any chemicals. Not an easy chore I know, but well worth the trouble.  Click On Picture To Enlarge;  See that blush, hmm good!!   My Opinion Only

Preparing A Horse or Horses For Winter.

Thinking back to when I had horses of my own it got me to thinking of what I did in preparing them for winter.  When the cold winter weather hits, many horse owners right away bring out the horse blankets.  Myself though, I have always figured that a horse’s normal winter coat is much more insulating than a blanket, and unless the horse has been clipped, is outside without a windbreak, or has been moved to a colder climate during the winter months, it will usually actually be warmer without a blanket.
One has to remember that the longer winter coat helps to trap the body heat against the skin. Also, tiny muscles in the skin raise the hairs, creating tiny air pockets which in turn heighten the insulating effect.  So if you flatten their fluffed-up coat by adding layers of light blankets, or even one heavy one, you can actually make the horse colder. Something to think about.  My Opinion Only

What’s For Dinner?

So what’s for dinner?  Here today at our home here in Port Loring, I dug out a block of frozen spinach that we picked fresh from our garden earlier this summer.   Took the lid off a jar of home done up tomatoes, no additives and got them simmering on the stove together.  I gotta’ tell ya, if you haven’t tasted fresh tomatoes mixed with spinach, your missing out on a real treat.  The only other thing I like with it is maybe a touch of sea salt and a pinch of fresh ground pepper. I got to say, pepper is my weakness.  I also like my soups and things related boiling hot.  Not sure why, just been that way all my life.   So that’s what is on our plates or should say, in our bowls for dinner, along with a piece or two of home made bread.  What can be better?  Nothing, that’s what.  Again, all our hard work this past summer has paid off, and is now being enjoyed, along with being so………….good for ya.   Have a great day.

What Is Happening To Our Bees?

Hi George, was wondering what your ideas are on why all our bees are slowly dying.  Jim Paterson.

Hi Jim good to hear from you.  That is a great question for sure.  For most parts the scientists will tell you they can’t explain why as of yet. Myself, I have a theory being an old farmer.  For years now us humans have been spraying chemicals like fungicides and pesticides on pretty well every thing we eat.   First off, we just have to look at how us humans are doing with eating all these things covered with poison.  Don’t have to look far, as most folks today are getting sicker inside than ever before.   What’s happening is, that we are slowly killing ourselves.  Our immune system isn’t built for all these man made chemicals.  Same goes for the Bees. We keep subjecting them to all kinds of things, like pesticides and all sorts of chemicals. Then when a disease comes along, or another insect like a mite, they aren’t able to protect themselves, as they are too weak. Kind of like us humans taking the flu shot each year, as it is slowly messing things up with our immune system.  Not only the pesticides are killing the bees, other things are too. Like stress from moving them hundreds of miles a day, introducing them to bees from other countries and places, and now the high technical things, like cell phones, heck there is all  kinds of things going through their air space, causing them to be disoriented and confused, they just don’t know what is happening.  I gotta’ tell ya, it doesn’t take no scientist to tell me what is happening.   We humans are the blame.  To single out just one would be wrong as there are many many companies out there today promoting all these things, some are even in the business that feeds you each day. I don’t think I have to mention any names here, as I am sure you all know exactly who I am speaking about.  These are the ones that are causing the problem.  We either have to wake up and start to straighten out this mess and tell these huge corporations to either clean up their act, or we will boycott everything they sell or promote, simple as that.  Years ago if one got to messing with ones crops or family they would be in dire trouble and folks took the law into their own hands.  Today they say we have special law enforcers to do it for us.  Thing is they can’t do it for us any-more, to much red tape and politics.  You have to do it folks.  Like I keep saying, take the blinders off, don’t be fooled into what these so called powers that be is telling you is all true, as it isn’t.  Either we get to doing it quickly, or…………….well, we will all  perish.  The ones that will survive will be the ones that comes from the old school or looks towards the old ways.  I am not saying all the new things today are bad, as they surely are not.  I am just saying we have to blend in some of the old ways with the new before it’s to late. These things that are happening haven’t just started. They have slowly been creeping up on us for years now.  It’s just now we are starting to see the results.  Hope this helps.  Oh, and with out the bees, all of us humans would cease to exist, in just a few short years.  My Opinion Only

Goodbye Margarine, Hello Butter.

My lovely sister Barb sent me this bit of info and it just fortifies my way of thinking.  Remember this, what mother nature put here for us to eat, well that is good, what the Powers That Be put here for us, isn’t so good. My Opinion Only

Pass The Butter. Please.

This is interesting . .. .

Margarine  was originally manufactured to fatten  turkeys  When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put  all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their  heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get  their money back.
It was a white substance with no food appeal  so they added the yellow colouring and sold it to people to use in place of butter.  How do you like it?   They have come out  with some clever new flavourings..

DO  YOU KNOW.. The difference between margarine and butter?

Read on to the end…gets very interesting!

Both  have the same amount of calories.

Butter  is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8  grams; compared   to 5 grams for margarine.

Eating margarine can increase  heart disease in women by  53%  over  eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent  Harvard  Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in  other foods.

Butter  has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few and
only  because  they are added!

Butter  tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavours of  other foods.

Butter  has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years .

And now, for Margarine..

Very High in Trans fatty acids.

Triples risk of coronary heart disease .
Increases  total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and  lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)

Increases  the risk of cancers up to five times..

Lowers  quality of breast milk.

Decreases immune response.

Decreases  insulin response.

And  here’s the most disturbing fact…. HERE IS THE PART THAT  IS  VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine  is but ONE MOLECULE away  from being PLASTIC… and shares 27 ingredients with PAINT

These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life  and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is  added,  changing the molecular structure of the  substance).

You  can try this yourself:

Purchase  a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded  area.  Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things:

*  no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it  (that should tell you something)

*  it does not rot or smell differently because it has  no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny  microorganisms will not a find a home to grow.  Why?   Because it is nearly plastic .  Would you melt your Tupperware and  spread that  on your toast?

Where Does A Writers Stories Take Place??

Question; Dear Mr. Walters;  I was just wondering if you would share where all your story writing takes place?

Well I have been a bit reluctant in telling folks, as it is hard to explain so….. figured instead of saying it in words, I would let you take a look.  I know it probably isn’t what one would have figured, but it does me well.  I am surrounded by the days of long ago, which brings stories to mind at a glance, and, well, that is what is suppose to happen.  This picture was taken last year and my lovely wife has changed things a touch, with a book case here and there which are filed  with hundreds of old time novels and things.  I will see about getting another picture in the coming days that does it more justice.  To enlarge the picture below, just click on it.    Hope this helps.

Firewood, Heating, Winter & Staying Fit All Right Here At Our Home In Port Loring

Well been a busy couple days here at our home. Firewood was delivered  on Monday, so in other words you might say that my lovely wife and I have had  our exercise equipment delivered right to our door.  That is the nice thing about living in the country, living within our means and enjoying each day as it is brought before us and making it for all its worth, that we do.  There isn’t one day that appears that my wife and I doesn’t take advantage of enjoying each moment.   The firewood below is ten cords of split hardwood, total amount is 12 cords.  I had around five cords in the shelter, so all total will be lots for heating the house next winter. Getting the wood this early assures of good dry wood for the next burning season.  Our heat for this winter is looked after and sitting in the basement. No going out in the cold for this couple, that’s for sure.  Never could understand why folks buy these outside furnaces, as in my mind who wants to get  up in the middle of a snow storm at three AM in the morning and go out in that cold, just to put a log on the fire. Think about that for a minute.   Ok………. that should tell you something shouldn’t it.   Hmm…… oh well, takes all kinds and to each his or her own I suppose.  Have a great day!!

The Benefits Of Fresh Farm Honey

Years ago Laura the lady of the house while I was growing up used to take me to the hives all summer long collecting the honey.   When home she would extract it with a device that Reg had made for her and in no time we were enjoying a treat that today only a few get to enjoy.  Honey has so many good things attached to it that most folks just take it for granted.  Especially none pasteurised honey.  Honey is like milk, once it has been pasterized it looses most of all its goodness.  Some say not, I say it does.  I have made up a list of what benefits honey can do for you  and figured I would share.  Take a look.

1. Instead of your morning coffee or tea, a drink consisting of a teaspoon of fresh ground cinnamon and raw honey to taste and one before bed on a daily basis was found to restore hearing loss.

2. Increasing the cinnamon to two teaspoons and following the same regimen as above, patients claimed they were cured of common arthritis.

3. Increasing the cinnamon to two tablespoons and mixing it in lukewarm water with one teaspoon of raw honey is said to relieve bladder infections in that this mixture will effectively destroy germs in the bladder.

4. A honey and cinnamon paste spread on your favorite breakfast bread, eaten regularly, reduces cholesterol. Your chances for a heart attack are diminished by clearing your arteries and increasing the blood flow in your veins.

5. With such a pleasant combination how could anyone complain of bad breath? Instead of your favorite mouthwash, try a combination of a teaspoon of honey mixed with cinnamon for fresh breath all day.

6. There are medical properties attributed to the sugar content in the honey that cause an increase in energy levels in senior citizens. An equal mix of raw honey and cinnamon, taken each afternoon increased their levels of energy and mental acuity.

7. A paste made of three parts honey, one part cinnamon, and applied to skin affected by pimples, or a paste, applied in equal parts, for skin infections such as ringworm, 8. eczema, and other types of infections were cured. Users claimed their skin was left completely clear and baby soft.

9. An unusual side effect of the users of the cinnamon and honey was weight loss. For those participating in the study, and consuming one cup of this mixture twice a day on an empty stomach before meals, weight loss was the end result.

10. The natural properties in raw honey that do not allow it to spoil arrest age and soften the skin; one teaspoon of cinnamon and four teaspoons of honey.

11. Raw honey may also be used to wash the face. A light amount should be distributed gently and rinsed thoroughly.

12. This remarkable drink has been used to aid in indigestion, 13. relieve upset stomachs, 14. relieve excess gas, 15. clear sinuses, 16. cure the common cold, and 17. cure the flu. Honey contains large amounts of vitamins and iron. These properties also help strengthen the immune system.

Who ever knew that two common ingredients could be so beneficial?

My wife has gone down three sizes with in six months from just enjoying a cup of fresh honey tea with cinnamon each morning.  Amazing huh?

What’s On This Writers Mind After Thirty Years?

Well not sure why they call it  SUNDAY, as there is no sun to be seen today, or should say any to speak of.  At any rate, not doing to much today other than writing up a few stories for my columns.  You know, I have heard of folks having writers block and never could figure out what they were really talking about.  I have always figured and even told folks, to just sit down and start writing, what comes to mind, is what is meant to be wrote.  Thing is, I have found that a few things that I have figured to be standard thinking, are, well, maybe are not always correct.  So being me, I figure I should be the one to let you folks know that I can slip up once in awhile.  Amazing I know, but true, ha ha. The problem I guess I am having today, is that after twenty some years of writing short stories relating to pretty well the same thing, one gets, well lets face it, bored and wanting to look for different avenues. My columns I will never stop as I look forward to writing them as much as my readers enjoy reading them.   So don’t take me wrong, I would never say I want to quit writing, as that is the furthest thing from the truth, but I am looking for other avenues that my writing can take me.  I have a novel novel on my mind now, which will pertain to a thriller mystery.  Can’t wait till I can give it the time it deserves.  I have also given some thought to doing more stories on my old Grandfather and his adventures through the USA, surveying in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I have a lot of info on him, and put into stories, I am thinking his material would make for some very entertaing reading for folks. My style of writing has done me well for a great number of years and was told to never change, early in my writing career, which I still believe is right on the  money and will continue to put words down as I always have.  So……………………there you go. As you can see, my mind is trying to get out of this slump I am in, which is very bothersome.  I guess I just have to use my own advice, set down and just start writing.   Hmm……….maybe my thinking has been right all along.  Talk Soon.

Great Aticle By Paul Harvey

What’s mainly wrong with society today is that too many Dirt Roads have been paved.
There’s not a problem in America today, crime, drugs, education, divorce, delinquency that wouldn’t be remedied, if we just had more Dirt Roads, because Dirt Roads give character.
People that live at the end of Dirt Roads learn early on that life is a bumpy ride.
That it can jar you right down to your teeth sometimes, but it’s worth it, if at the end is home…a loving spouse, happy kids and a dog.
We wouldn’t have near the trouble with our educational system if our kids got their exercise walking a Dirt Road with other kids, from whom they learn how to get along.
There was less crime in our streets before they were paved.
Criminals didn’t walk two dusty miles to rob or rape, if they knew they’d be welcomed by 5 barking dogs and a double barrel shotgun.
And there were no drive by shootings.
Our values were better when our roads were worse!
People did not worship their cars more than their kids, and motorists were more courteous, they didn’t tailgate by riding the bumper or the guy in front would choke you with dust & bust your windshield with rocks.
Dirt Roads taught patience.
Dirt Roads were environmentally friendly, you didn’t hop in your car for a quart of milk you walked to the barn for your milk.
For your mail, you walked to the mail box.
What if it rained and the Dirt Road got washed out? That was the best part, then you stayed home and had some family time, roasted marshmallows and popped popcorn and pony rode on Daddy’s shoulders and learned how to make prettier quilts than anybody.
At the end of Dirt Roads, you soon learned that bad words tasted like soap.
Most paved roads lead to trouble, Dirt Roads more likely lead to a fishing creek or a swimming hole.
At the end of a Dirt Road, the only time we even locked our car was in August, because if we didn’t some neighbour would fill it with too much zucchini.
At the end of a Dirt Road, there was always extra springtime income, from when city dudes would get stuck, you’d have to hitch up a team and pull them out.
Usually you got a dollar…always you got a new friend…at the end of a Dirt Road!

Don’t Be Fooled When It Comes To Eating Properly

Things folks are going to have  to start realising is that all food isn’t good for you. My wife and I having farmed most our lives and supplying fresh vegetables, fruits and things to the public. you might say we know a touch more than most of what is really getting into the food chain. Not in a bragging way don’t think that,  just that we have dealt with these things most our life.  Food is life and it is something we can’t do with out and these huge companies know this and are now trying to take control of the farming industry.  And I should say they are doing a good job at it too, as most of all the small time farmers are gone.  What a shame, I always say a once self efficient country like Canada, now having to rely on other countries or huge corporations.  Just not right folks, and for your sake I am hoping more will stand up and speak out for what is right.

The chemical commonly used to ripen fruits commercially is ethephon (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid), which penetrates into the fruit and decomposes to ethylene.  This stuff in itself isn’t good for you.

You have to remember that when you see nice looking fruit from other countries like China and so on in the stores here in Canada, that they aren’t shipped to us ripened, they are shipped to us green. As if they didn’t they would all be rotten when they arrived. SO, if you pick fruit when it is green or not ripened in other words, all the goodness hasn’t been developed yet and in turn you are not getting the things that your body needs when you get to eating them.  Like take cows, chickens and pigs, they are pumped full of all kinds of chemicals, drugs and who knows what, so they grow fast and fat. Most never see the light of day, or for that matter even have a chance to take a walk around the barn yard. Some never get to put one foot in front of the other.  They say this is the only way they can feed the world.  I say that is crazy talk.  It all boils down to money.  If the old farmers were still out there in the fields like they were years ago, there would be lots of food for folks. You might have to buy it directly from them, or a fruit stand out by the road, or a farmers market, but at least you would be eating healthy and good quality food, food that does your body good.  Now the farms are pretty well owned or controlled by huge corporations and the ones that still owns their own farm. are told what they can grow, how much they can grow, what seeds to use, like generic and so on.  You call this farming?  I don’t I call this farming at all. I could tell you what I really think it is but I won’t as it wouldn’t help one bit.  So folks all that I can say is don’t buy food that is not in season here in Canada, support your farmers, speak out against these things like Generic food and seeds, pesticides and so on.  When our fruit and veggies comes into  stores buy up what you can and put enough away for winter. The way to do this, simple, get back into doing up preserves and things.  Sure it takes some time, but as I keep on saying. How much is your health worth to you. Most folks care more for their own car than they do their own body today.   Better yet get out there and plant your own garden. I figure if you own a bit of property there is no reason to not having something growing through the nice sunny days of summer. It’s all up to you.  My opinion only.

Generic Food & Seeds Say No

The thing folks are going to have to deal with and deal with it fast, is this Generic food that they are putting out there today.  Things is most just don’t realise what it is doing to us humans.   If you take a look at some of these big farms through out the USA you will see that they are owned by the Pharmaceutical companies.  Right there that should send up some red flags.   If this is allowed to get going which it is already, they will have control of what ever they want to put into your food. You won’t know what they are doing to you.  This is not a good thing.  I do see though that folks are standing up for what is right and some big companies are noticing. Like Wall-mart,  They are now heading out to the farmers that grow organic and talking to them. You can see on their shelves now lots of organic things which is a good sign.  Just need to get more.  The only one that can change this before it is to late, is you.  What you have to do is stop buying this generic stuff and go organic.  I know it is going to cost you a touch more, but what is your health worth to you.  Other ways is to grow your own, get out on a weekend and go to a farmers market.  Stop in and see a farmer and ask some questions like is your crops organic or is your meat, chickens and pork let loose to eat good old grass and things.  Free range they are calling them.   All kinds of things you can do, and if a lot of folks get to doing what is right, no matter how large these companies are, they will have to listen.  Just got to say no………………………..to Generic, and don’t give in, your life might depend on it.  My Opinion Only

Quick Good Morning From Port Loring Ontario

}Good morning.”  Cool morning here so far, with frost on the pumpkins showing all  its beauty.  Guess some say there isn’t anything beautiful about it, but I say.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, just like the old days when my Grandfather was alive.  Nothing nicer to look outside on these cold mornings and watch the smoke slowly curling up over the trees and bowing down to the earth below.  And to see the frost glistening off the grass and trees is something all in itself.  My wife and I just love it.  The old wood furnace is perkin’ away as well as the coffee, which aroma is now letting me know that it’s time to go and get a cup.  Enjoy your day.

Letter Of Appreciation From The Powassan Library

Well got a letter from the Powassan Library yesterday,  letting me know how much they appreciated my coming down awhile back. It was a real fine night for sure and had a good turn out too. The folks that run the library did a real find job and should be commended. The food was great and nicely laid out. They made me feel welcome and was a relaxing evening.    I got to say though, their punch was fantastic.  My wife even got their recipe before we left.  I should be the one thanking them. So………I will.  Thanks folks!

“How Could We All Have Been So Blind For So Long!’

You know for a few years now I have been writing things here in my Blog that I felt that others should at the very least be taking a serious look at.  The thing I would like you to know is, that I am not against all doctors, lawyers, ministers, government officials, pharmaceutical companies, teachers and folks like that.  I do really believe there are some, that are on the right track and truly trying to help folks in today’s world. I just wish that they would speak out more often.

On the other hand, I also believe that there is a lot of them folks out there that are only in the game for money, or to make a name for themselves.  I also believe that there is a lot of them that are using us as human Ginny Pigs.  I also believe that we are being subjected to things that in turn effects a fellow or gal’s mind and body, an sways their thinking in such ways that it is causing harm to themselves.  Years ago a family relied on what was on hand and had the common sense to make their own decisions.   They also knew when the wool was being pulled over their eyes, so to speak.  I like to think of myself as one of those.   Trouble is, we are a dying breed and if the younger ones don’t catch on fast, this world is going to be in serious trouble.  I have seen a glimmer of hope though here in Canada, as folks lately have started to stand up for themselves and speaking out, not being afraid of what others will think, say or do.  Sadly our younger generation today, about one-third or more believe in ghosts, communication with the dead, extraterrestrials, aliens, Big Foot, etc.  Are you getting what I am trying to say here???  So to sum it all up and pointing directly to those; doctors, lawyers, government officials, ministers, teachers, and pharmaceutical companies, the ones I distrust. I say this, for myself and others like myself:  “Don’t expect us to like you or to listen to you any more. You promised us too much and failed to deliver. You never even tried to answer the questions truthfully that we have all been asking. You have just expected us to believe that what ever you say is the truth. I believe that you are all playing, misusing and abusing our sense of wonder. There is an appetite for wonder, and isn’t true science well qualified to feed it?”

”  It’s time for us to change our ways folks.”  My Opinion Only
