Winter Storm Warning For Port Loring & Surrounding Areas

..Heavy snow and blowing snow threatening Saturday.. An area of light to moderate snow is currently affecting the area giving a few centimetres. The snow should taper off this evening before a more significant low pressure area from Texas brings significant amounts of snow starting overnight as it moves towards Southern Ontario. Snow amounts of 15 to 20 cm are likely with this storm. In addition strong northerly winds ushering in much colder air will also result in very low visibility in blowing snow in exposed areas. There is also a risk of freezing rain overnight. Conditions should improve by Saturday evening. Travelling conditions may become quite hazardous as a result on Saturday. People should be prepared to adjust travel plans as required.

Warm Day Here In Port Loring

Well we got rid of  a bit of ice along my roof edge.   But thinkin’ we will be needing another day or so of warm weather to finish things.  But………they say no, so might have to live with what we got rid of thus far, until spring arrives.  I also am predicting an early spring for us up her in the north. Hate going out on a limb saying that, but if I don’t I will regret I didn’t in the coming days.   Another good thing with this warm weather my wood furnace has been given a bit of a reprieve, which makes me happy as we can ease up on the wood burning.  Now don’t get me wrong we have more cold weather in the future heading our way starting tomorrow, but I am thinking it won’t last.   So enjoy your snowmobile and ice fishing while you can, as old Mother Nature has plans for us know it all humans in the coming weeks.  Ok with me too, as I am looking forward to gettin’ my new cedar strip boat in the water come the 24th of May.  Well maybe not brand new, but new to me after restoring it last summer.  Will write another post on that in the coming days.  Have a good one.

Another Warm Up Heading Toward Port Loring

Well a nice warm up will be heading our way for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Might even get up to around 50 which is ok by me, as I got a lot of ice build up on the edge of my roof.  Only thing is we are going to probably get some rain with it too, as it is only common sense that with warmer temperatures and lots of snow on the ground, both put together causes rain.  But, hey, maybe you can all drag out your barbecues for a day or so and cook up a burger or two.  After Friday though back to some cooler weather, but nothing drastic.  Have a great day.

Our Metric System Was Just A Ploy To Change The Way We Think

Well my prediction of colder weather was right on.  Down to minus 20 this morning old scale not metric.  Now that is cold.   Although my sister Barb out west makes our temperatures look like summer.  Think the time to go for a visit in that country is mid July.  LOL One of these days will do just that too.  Thing is, this metric system has folks minds messed up.  For example they say it is 0 degrees outside.  That sure sounds cold but in reality it is 32 degrees, which is not bad actually and if a sunny day the temperatures in the sun would be around 40.  Same as gas for your car, it says on the sign out front of the service stations, 1.12 cents a litre.  What it should say and what it really is, is $4.48 cents a gallon.   Thing is bringing this metric in to our society was done for a reason.  The reason being that it changed what people thought and think.  They knew the price of things were going to go up and this was one way of getting around it.  Temperature is the same, folks look out the window and see five below 0. Darn I am not going out in that, so they sit in the house putting on the beef.  This is what our Powers To Be want to happen. They want us to become less self efficient and rely on modern medicine and them more and more every day, and it’s working.  More folks are getting sick, more are gaining weight, to many to name.  Not a good things folks, so don’t be fooled about this metric thing, there is more there than meets the eye let me tell ya.  Oh and don’t forget the trillions of dollars that it cost to change us over to metric.  Something like our two languages, French and English, won’t get into that, well maybe one day.  My opinion only.

Colder Weather For Port Loring George’s Prediction

Well we had a few days of warmer weather now we will have about four days of colder weather.  Tonight and tomorrow and maybe the next day the temperatures will go down to below 0 old scale. Then look for a warm up a bit.  Ok with me as I don’t have to stoke the old wood furnace as much when it warms up some. But for the next few days, up through the night is going to be called for.  Have  a great day.

Few Winter Tips

Keep your headlights clear with car wax! Just wipe ordinary car wax on your headlights. It contains special water repellents that will prevent that messy mixture from accumulating on your lights – lasts 6 weeks.

Squeak-proof your wipers with rubbing alcohol! Wipe the wipers with a cloth saturated with rubbing alcohol or ammonia. This one trick can make badly streaking & squeaking wipers change to near perfect silence & clarity.

Ice-proof your windows with vinegar! Frost on it’s way? Just fill a spray bottle with three parts vinegar to one part water & spritz it on all your windows at night. In the morning, they’ll be clear of icy mess. Vinegar contains acetic acid, which raises the melting point of water—preventing water from freezing!

Prevent car doors from freezing shut with cooking spray! Spritz cooking oil on the rubber seals around car doors & rub it in with a paper towel.  The cooking spray prevents water from melting into the rubber

Fog-proof your windshield with shaving cream! Spray some shaving cream on the inside of your windshield & wipe if off with paper towels. Shaving cream has many of the same ingredients found in commercial defoggers.

De-ice your lock in seconds with hand sanitiser! Just put some hand sanitiser gel on the key & the lock & the problems solved!

Weather Across The USA Jan. 15/2011

Kind of interesting for us weather buffs. Snow is on the ground in 49 out of 50 states – every one except Florida. Forecasters described the storm as a fast-moving and severe, where air pressure has dropped alarmingly quickly. It is characterised by heavy snow and winds thanks to a jet stream extending unusually far south.

Don’t think I have heard of such a thing in all my born days.

Happy New Years

Well thought I would say hello and wish you all a Happy New Years. Wife and I are down with a cold right now, not sure where we caught the thing but in today’s world it is pretty hard not to catch one or two a year. Although this is first cold for my wife in seven years and first one for me in three years so guess we are doing ok.  At any rate on another note raining here today and temperatures at 45 old scale.  Got rid of some ice build up on my roof which is a good thing.  Also will melt some snow on the lakes now so the ice can get thicker and the snowmobiles can get to having some fun.  Colder weather is heading our way though starting tomorrow.  Today we are taking down our Christmas tree as it has started to shed some so house is slowly getting back to normal.  Have  a good day.

First Heavy Snow Fall In Port Loring Ontario

Well put my snow blower in the shop to warm up last night and good thing too as we got dumped on pretty good.  Sure is pretty out there, so wife took a few pictures of our home draped in a winter wonderland.  Thought we would share. Also had my new hat on my Son Craig and Daughter In Law bought me. Oh and new gloves too and they are also very warm. I guess I complained to much about my ears getting cold to them.  Any ways don’t look on the pretty side but it sure is warm.  Click pictures to enlarge.

Global Warming Hmmmmm

Well was talking to my friend the other day who is a highly educated scientist dealing with weather.  I was asking him what he thought of all this ice melting in and around the north pole.  He sent me a couple pictures of how things really are.  Take a look at the pictures click to enlarge, then take a look at the dates below.   Should get you to thinking.  Oh, should say that white on the picture is ice and snow.

Cool Couple Days Here In Port Loring

Well we have had a few cool days here in Port Loring, but don’t worry it won’t last.  Warmer weather is on the way for the weekend and winds changing to the South, South West which by the way is what you want for some good fishing. Old saying is, that when the wind is from the West, fishing is at its best and that is so true.   Can’t wait to get out there.  Today though I did put a two stick fire on in the old wood furnace to take out the dampness in the basement and the house and have to say it sure felt good too.  Seems as the years pass, I  feel the cold more.  Guess the old blood is thinning out a touch.  Not much now mind ya, don’t want you to think I am getting too old.   Again your only as old as you feel and I have to say these days I have been feeling pretty good.

Grass is sure growing though let me tell ya and it is a full time job getting it cut every week.  I have around an acre and a half to cut.   But I enjoy doing it and keeping things up around the house.  Nothing better in my eyes than to get out in my gardens and do some hoeing or what ever.  Makes my day with the smell of the fresh soil and sun just a shinning.  What more can a feller or gal ask for??  Vegetable garden is doing really well so far, got tomato plants around three feet high, just need some sun to get them blossoms turning into tomatoes.  I am confident though that we will have all we need.  Long range looks good.   Coffee time here, fresh perked Nabob Tradition is my favourite, have a cup or two every day.  My lovely wife looks after that end of things.  Look forward to it too.  Should also say a cup or two is good for ya and helps keep Alzheimer’s away.   In Closing I Would Like To Wish You Well.

Happenings At The Walters House

Well cool morning here this morning.  Down to around 54.  Old bones feel it too, so started a two stick fire to take the chill out.  Feels good too.  Vegetable garden is doing great this year even with the above normal temperatures when I was planting.  I like to ease my plants out into the garden so they get accustomed to the soil slowly.  But this year it got hot and stayed hot for a couple weeks.  One then has to just keep them watered and hilled up and problems are solved.  Road work here in Port Loring is going to schedule and should have our new highway all paved by the end of August.  Don’t really like all the construction, but one has to take a bit of not so good items to get to the good items.  Will look nice when all said and done and a heck of a lot smoooooooother.  Well you folks have a great day.  Raining here this morning as well as the cooler temperatures.  So think I will get my fishing gear all ready to go for the season.   Season now is open for pike and pickerel but I like to wait till them pesky black flies take to leaving.   Also Bass fishing will be opening the fourth Thursday of June, so lookin’ forward to that.  Talk Soon

How to Know If Frost Is In The Forecast

Hi folks, for years on the farm we worked with Mother Nature.  I say worked with her, as there is just no other Way.  She gives you clues and if your up on some of her ways, well your ahead of the game.  So……………..for those that aren’t sure whether to cover your tomato plants at nights in case of frost, let me show you an easy way to find what the night time temperatures will be.   First  off you need to know what the Dew Point Temperatures, between Noon and One, Once you know that, you will know what the lowest it will be for the following night. Simple huh? Has worked for me for many years.  Don’t be in to much of a rush in getting them seeds into the ground either.  Better to wait till night time temperatures stay above fifty.

Snowfall Warning : North Bay – West Nipissing, Port Loring

Hmmmm…..Just when you thought it was gone for good, winter is making a comeback in Ontario.

Warnings

North Bay – Powassan – Mattawa
3:39 PM EDT Friday 07 May 2010
Snowfall warning for
North Bay – Powassan – Mattawa issued

Very late season heavy snow overnight and Saturday.

An intensifying low pressure system tracking up from Illinois across Lake Huron into Eastern Ontario will bring a late season heavy snowfall to Northeastern Ontario.

Rain ahead of this system will move in this evening then change over to snow by morning as brisk northeasterly winds draw in cold Arctic air.

Latest indications suggest that 15 cm of snow will fall in a 6 to 12 hour period across North Bay and Sudbury and possibly as far north as Earlton by Saturday afternoon.

The snow will taper off to scattered wet flurries in the wake of the storm centre later on Saturday.

Motorists should be prepared for dangerous winter driving conditions from very low visibility in heavy snow and possible snow accumulation on the roads.

Darn and I just put my snowblower away, well…………I refuse to bring it back out, just going to have to melt on its own.
