The Quiet Part Out Loud on August 18/2025

Good morning folks. You know… truth is, I don’t always know where these words are going, I just let them wander.

Weather-wise, things have cleared up some this morning here in cottage country. The temperatures dropped a lot too, which makes it just right for doing a bit of work outside, or for front porch sittin’, soaking in the nature that surrounds us. Days like this make me feel good about living where we do. Which lately gets me thinking about the alternatives… cities full of noise, traffic, and people who think a car horn is a form of conversation. That’s when I ask myself, why are we even thinking about moving? Honestly… some days, I think we humans get restless just to see if we can trade in a good thing for a headache.

Today’s Weather for Port Loring Ontario Canada (Monday, August 18)

Things are shaping up real nice out here. We’re sitting at about 71°F for the high, with sun and a few friendly clouds passing through.

Tonight

We’ll cool off to around 55°F, which is perfect sleeping weather if you like cracking a window and listening to the night sounds. A few clouds might roll in, but nothing to spoil the peace. Just enough to remind you the sky isn’t as empty as we sometimes think.

Tomorrow (Tuesday, August 19)

Expect a mix of sun and clouds, with a couple of showers popping up in the afternoon. High will be about 70°F, dropping to 56°F at night. So basically, tomorrow’s agenda is: enjoy the morning, and the rain in the afternoon.

Yesterday I worked the day away in my shop doing some cleaning, then headed out to the vegetable garden and planted a row of lettuce. Now, some might say, “Hey George, isn’t it a little late in the season for planting?” Well, truth be told, it is for most things. But for lettuce, not so much. Lettuce doesn’t take long to grow, and it just so happens it likes the cool weather, especially romaine. So with that in mind, I got out there and did it. In about three weeks, give or take, it should be on our plates at suppertime. And let me tell you, it’s a lot better than the store-bought stuff that looks tired before you even get it home. And then to find there is no taste to it at all.

So what am I up to today? GW

Well, seeing as it’s such a nice one outside, I’ll be spending a bit of time in my woodworking shop. I’ve got a couple shelves I want to put up on one wall, which will come in handy for jars of odds and ends I’ve been sorting through, like screws, nuts, bolts, nails, all those little things that somehow multiply when you’re not looking. After that, there’ll be some front porch sittin’ with my wife. She’ll be needing a rest, too, since she’s busy putting up our tomatoes for winter. And I’ll tell you, nothing beats pulling out those homegrown tomatoes in the middle of winter… full of taste and nourishment, and a reminder of summer when we need it most.

So yea, that’s what’s on my plate this morning.

Best Fishing Times for Today – Port Loring, Ontario

Major Bite Times:
• 8:15 AM – 10:15 AM
• 8:46 PM – 10:46 PM
These are your prime windows. Fish will be active, hungry, and ready to make your day worthwhile.

Minor Bite Times:
• 12:08 AM – 1:08 AM
• 5:21 PM – 6:21 PM
Good for casual fishing. You might get a nibble, or you might just enjoy the peace and quiet… either way, it’s better than watching your line sit still.

Fish are usually more willing to bite during low light, like dawn, dusk, or under a few clouds. A little light rain can stir them up too, though heavy downpours will have them hiding until things settle. Good Luck!

So with that bit of information, I’m off for a bite to eat that my lovely wife has made for me. After that, I’ll settle into my chair on the front porch with a hot cup of Pukka Supreme Matcha Green Organic Tea. Seriously, try it sometime, it’s about the best there is today, and soooo good for you. And if you sneak in a cookie or two, just call it a tactical green-tea energy boost, hell, nobody’s keeping score, at least not around here.

Notes Most Won’t Print on August 17/2025

Good morning, You know… thinking on things… not that it really matters to most, but I’ve outlived typewriters, ink ribbons, and editors, but not the words.

Well, it’s a cloudy, gloomy morning waking up here in cottage country. And we had a shower roll through during the night, and that left my shoes soaked as I forgot to bring them in before going to bed. Guess I’ll need to dry them out, though I’m lucky enough to have another pair to keep me going in the meantime.

Port Loring Weather

Monday: Nice day with periods of clouds and sunshine. High near 71°F (22°C), with a low around 55°F (13°C).

Today: A passing morning shower, then cooler with partial sunshine. High around 67°F (20°C), dropping tonight to about 45°F (7°C).

Port Loring Fishing Times

  • Morning: 7:13 AM to 9:13 AM
  • Midday: 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM
  • Afternoon: 4:15 PM to 5:15 PM
  • Evening: 7:00 PM to 9:44 PM

Fishing Tip: My old Dad always said if the wind’s in your face, that’s where the fish will be, too. Another good one was to keep an eye on the minnows, as if they’re skittish near shore, you can bet something bigger isn’t far behind.

On another note, yesterday I actually managed to get some work done outside around the home here, and somehow even wrestled a story into submission that’s been nagging me for a while now. Truth be told, it was a mighty fine day… so fine, in fact, I half-expected the world to show up at my door asking what the catch was. But nope, it just let me have it, and I’ll take that as a win.

So what are you to today, GW?

Well today I am thinking of fixing up my shop a bit better, as after that garage sale things aren’t where they should be… and with winter not too far off, and if the house doesn’t sell… well, I will be wanting a place to work in. So yea, that is what I will be doing.

But not until after I have my breakfast, that my lovely wife is making for me.

Words with My Morning Coffee on August 16/2025

Good morning, some days the words come easy, today we’ll see.

Well, one thing is for sure, no one can complain about not having warm weather this year. Still, you better enjoy it while it lasts, because things are going to change in the coming days. Personally, I don’t mind the heat all that much as living where we do, it never stays around for long.

And somewhere in the back of my mind I hear my old Dad’s voice, saying:: Don’t get too used to it, the seasons always settle their own accounts.

Weather Forecast for Port Loring

Today (Saturday, August 16)
Expect a very warm day, with mixed sunshine and clouds and a morning shower in spots, followed by scattered afternoon thunderstorms. The high will reach around 86 °F, with an overnight low near 57 °F.

Dad would add, “Keep an eye on the sky; those afternoon storms sneak up faster than you think.”

Tonight
Conditions settle into mostly clear skies, with temperatures dipping to about 57 °F—a calm end to what’s been a humid, unsettled day.

Tomorrow (Sunday, August 17)
The air cools off and clears up: partly sunny skies, noticeably less humid, and a high near 69 °F, while nighttime temperatures drop to around 46 °F.

Highway 522: I have to say, there isn’t half the traffic here that we’ve seen in years past. And truthfully, there’s a reason for that. A lot of folks are hurting these days, with those in power taking the money people work so hard to earn. Half a paycheck gone in the blink of an eye, and not one of the people taking it has done a lick of work for it.

I will say it again: Every penny a working man or woman earns should be theirs. Not one red cent should be touched. They’ll tell you it’s for the greater good, but the truth is… it’s just a legal way to rob the working many/woman.

On another note, yesterday I mostly took it easy at my computer, working on a story that had been nudging me for the past few days, and it turned out to be a good day as the words flowed as if they were meant to be told. Grey Wolf would have said there’s a rhythm to these things, like the wind moving through the trees, and when it comes, you just follow it, letting it guide you. You could say it feels like stepping into a quiet clearing where you’re exactly where you’re meant to be, and everything falls into place.

Port Loring Fishing – Saturday, August 16

Best Fishing Times:

  • Evening Bite: ~6:45 PM – 8:45 PM

Fishing Tips:

  • Fish will likely stay in deeper water or under shade—check around weeds, rocks, and fallen trees.
  • Move lures slowly; warm water makes them sluggish.
  • Lures/Bait: Small jigs, spinnerbaits, or live minnows work best today. Topwater lures can be good right before sunset.
  • Light wind toward shore can push fish to edges—cast near banks.
  • Safety first: storms expected in the evening, so plan accordingly.

Dad’s Note:

“Fish the edges, watch the movement, and keep your hands steady. The simplest approach often works best.”

So with that, I’m off to enjoy the breakfast my lovely wife made, and then we’ll head out to the front porch and watch the world go by, taking it easy for now, though I’ve got to tell you, we’ve both been working harder than we probably should.

A Few Lines on August 14/2025

Good morning, folks. You know… I’ve been writing so long, my first drafts used to come in on horseback. And that is the honest truth.

Well, as you know, I’ve missed a few mornings here on the blog, and there’s a good reason for it. This past week, I’ve been working on a novel I started years ago, the one that’s been sitting in the back of my mind for far too long. I finally decided it was time to get the first half done.

The rest of the story is already clear in my head. I thought about making it a series, but decided to tell it all in one book instead, which means it’ll be a bit longer. I’m happy to say what I’ve written so far turned out just the way I wanted.

Now I can get back to my regular routine, and when winter comes, I’ll be ready to finish the whole thing.

As for today, my wife and I are going to get the mowing out of the way, which will take most of the morning. With all this dry weather we’ve been having, we were able to skip a week of cutting, but now the yard is starting to look a bit shabby — and that bothers us to no end. The fix? Wake up the old mowers, which we’ll do as soon as we finish our breakfast.

On another note, the vegetable gardens have been looking much better since we had that rain a couple of days ago. No matter how much you water, it’s never as good as what a good rain can do. Especially our tomatoes, which are just starting to turn red.

Actually had a couple of tomato sandwiches for supper last night, and they tasted real good. Nothing like home-grown tomatoes – those store-bought ones have no taste at all. And here’s the thing: if there’s no taste, there’s nothing good in them health-wise either. But today, well, most everything in the stores is the same. Kind of a shame where we’ve gotten to over the years.

So, with all that said, I’ve got a lot to do today, so I’m off to have the breakfast my little woman is making for me. She’s already rattling pans in the kitchen, which is my cue to get moving. Once the work’s out of the way, I’ll swing back by the blog and chat a bit more. There’s usually something worth talking about.

Over Seventy Some Years and Still Writing on August 9/2025

Good morning, folks. You know, I’ve been writing since before the internet was even a rumor.

Weather Forecast for Port Loring Ontario Canada.

Today: Mostly cloudy, heat climbing into the upper 80s °F (31 °C). Feels like the kind of day when even the pine trees look tired. Heat warnings are also in place, so I don’t think I will be doing any real hard work outside today.

Tonight: Warm and muggy, mid-70s °F (24 °C). The air will hang on you like an old wool coat, even after dark.

I’ve seen plenty of hot days up here in the north, but this one’s the sort where you take your time, enjoy a cool drink occasionally, and let the world turn without you for a spell.

Fishing Times For Port Loring:

Hot as it is, the fish will be layin’ low. Best chance is from 12:48 to 2:48 this afternoon, keep your bait down where it’s cool. Then again from 8:34 to 9:34 tonight, when the heat backs off and they start movin’. Fish slow, stay cool, and don’t work harder than the fish are.

Highway 522: Well, I have to say, traffic in our neck of the woods has been slower than a Sunday drive this summer. Folks are feeling the pinch these days, what with our so-called powers taking more than half their paychecks. Add to that the heat and dry spell we’ve been getting—no rain worth talking about in weeks—and it’s no wonder people are staying home, hiding in the shade or enjoying their air conditioners. Truth be told, I can’t say I blame them. Out on the highway, you can go for miles without meeting a soul, and the fields and ditches are starting to look as tired as the folks who tend them.

On another note: My wife and I managed to get all of next year’s firewood stacked nicely under our lean-to, which will now dry till next year. Truth is, we enjoy that kind of work—or pretty much anything—as long as we’re doing it together. There’s a comforting feeling knowing that when winter finally shows up, no matter how bitter the cold gets, we’ll have a warm, toasty fire waiting for us.

Add to that some preserves from our garden and a good supply of grass-fed beef in the freezer, along with some home-grown potatoes, and well, what more can I say? We’re all set for whatever the season throws our way.

So what are you up to today, GW?

Well, with another hot one on the way, I’m thinking I’ll kick back in the cool of the house—maybe write a story or two, or finally get back to editing that novel I’ve been working on for the past few years. But before the heat really settles in, I’m going to give the tomatoes, corn, squash, and zucchini a good long drink. The ground’s dry as can be, and the worst part is, there’s not much rain expected around here for a few days yet.

So, with that, I’m off for breakfast that my lovely wife’s fixing for me, which consists of some Bob’s Red Mill Organic Steel Cut Oats she soaked overnight. One of the healthiest foods you can eat, and none of the chemicals you get in the other stuff. It’s a real shame how most of our food these days is loaded with pesticides, PFAS, and a whole mess of other junk. Makes me shake my head, wondering what those powers that be and big companies are thinking. No wonder so many folks are sick these days.
