News For Port Loring

Not much to report here this morning.  Things are actually pretty quiet around town for this time of year.  Kind of shows a fellow or gal what is happening here and around the country.   Also back so school is upon us and folks are busy enriching their young ones with new cloths, books and things for the upcoming year.  Myself years ago, I was lucky to have a pencil and paper when I went to school, and new clothes, well….they were unheard of LOL. But that is OK  today young ones are more fortunate or most are and that is a good thing.  At least in some ways.   One last thing.  Don’t forget to go and pick up some bait at Gohm’s Bait & Tackle Business phone: 705-757-2620, 18B Davis Dr.
Port Loring, ON  Just ask for Reg and tell him George sent ya, nice fellow and while your there take a look at his lures, lots of Rapala Lures, top of the line in my books.  Also lots of live bait just waitin’ to cozy up to that big one.  Enjoy your day, my friends.

Well the corn fest is closing in on us here in Port Loring. Below I have added a news letter letting folks know all about it.  It is one event that you won’t want to miss.  Also in a great location too, with lots of parking and readily available facilities for everyone.

ARGYLE RIDERS NEWS LETTER
Hello to All:
The Argyle Riders will be holding our 19TH Annual Cornfest  on September 1st, 2012 – starting at 2:00 p.m. once again at the Arnstein Community Center.  Special thanks to our Local Services Board for allowing us the use of the Community Park.  Our usual fabulous fare of beef on a bun, beans and corn on the cob and a well stocked bar will be available.
We are HOPING to have the helicopter back again this year – IF they can be available, for those of you who are interested in a Helicopter ride – they will be at the Community Center at 12:00 noon – so come early to book your flight.  Last year the helicopter rides ended early when black clouds and rain threatened the safety – lets hope for a perfect day this year.  We will know closer to the date whether or not the helicopter will be available – so feel free to call Jake (705) 7275-2012 to check.
We will be offering local vendors the opportunity to set up displays for goods and services at the site.  We will be offering shuttle service to and from the Cornfest.  Arrangements can be made for pickup and return trips by calling Kerry Booth at (705) 757-3450 (bus) or (705) 757-2290 (home).
We will have our usual games of chance (50/50 raffle) and our famous Pegboard (lots of nice prizes this year).  Last year the silent auction went over so well that we have decided to focus on another one for this year and hope to have some fantastic prizes.
Entertainment will be provided by the Cats & Jammers through the afternoon until 10 pm or until they get tired !!  lots of fun guaranteed with this gang.
The price of admission is the same as before $12.00 at the gate and $10.00 advance with advance tickets available until Aug 25th at Argyle Fuels, Jakes Place or by contacting Betty Webb at (705) 757- 2504.  Those buying advance tickets will be entered into an early bird draw for a prize valued at $200.00 so get your tickets early.   Enclosed are raffle tickets for a BBQ and second prize is a gazebo – thank you to Rob at Port Loring Home Hardware.

You can fill out your raffle tickets and mail them to us with the money if you cannot attend the Cornfest – by August 26th – or bring them with you to enter in the draw at the gate.
Note:  No pets , weapons or coolers please

On the snowmobile scene there has been an increase of $10 in the cost for permits  – to $210.00 if purchased before Dec1st and $260.00 after Dec 1st.  Permits will be available some time in September – so buy early and save – just get it out of the way so you don’t forget.  The Snow insurance Guarantee has been scrapped , wonder why ?

The Argyle Riders are in the process of re-decking the bridge at Wellers Folly.  This is a major undertaking and will involve considerable expense, however,  this is a scenic part of our trail system and we will endeavor to make this a success.

Well fishing even though nature in some respects said it was going to be good for the past two days, wasn’t the greatest.  Reason being with the  high east wind and cloudy conditions, well…..kind of threw a curve into what was suppose to be.  I did get out for both days.  The first day a few small ones, Bass, the second my good friend Barry caught a nice pike.  My wife and I enjoyed a nice pike supper let me tell ya.  Personally I enjoy pike over pickerel, or as some of our USA friends call them Walleye.    Not saying walleye aren’t tasty…. as the surely are.  Well enjoy your day my friends and hope you all have a great long weekend.  Drive safe.

News For Port Loring & District

Well we are getting a touch of rain here this morning, some thunder and lightning, but most of it I am thinking went south of us this time.  The last few storms went north of us.  Seems Port Loring is being left out this summer when it comes to rain.  Could mean though that lots of snow is heading our way come winter.  Time will tell all.  On another note: I bought GPS last week,a Garmin 10. Click Picture to enlarge. Took a bit of figuring, on how to work the thing but after playing around with it I think I figured out the main points of interest. At least for what I need it for. I am interested in taking co-ordinates of fishing spots and historical places.  The maps for it are quite expensive I found but did manage to download a few of the inland waters around our area and one of Ontario.  What I was looking for was the depths of the lakes to down load but so far no luck.   I am also trying to figure out a simple way of way saving the locations that I want to keep so they will be easy to locate on the GPS. Nice thing is I can upload my data to my computer through a USB cable that comes with it.  So in doing so I will be able to add them to my own maps.  Great little bit of technology for sure, just takes some getting used to.  If anyone has one has one of these and has conquered all the things it does, it would be nice to chat to you about things.  Have a great day.

Great looking day out there.  Sure nice to wake up to the sun just a glistening on the Pines.  Gardens now with the lack of rain needs to be watered pretty well every day now.  Bug report not much to report around town.  Kind of quiet out there actually.  Folks are enjoying their cottages I suspect and relaxing.  Which is a good thing.  Enjoy your day my friends, that’ what I am going to do.
