What’s Happening Feb. 2/2022

Good Morning. So how you all doing on this fine Wednesday morning? Good I hope. It has warmed up some, with the temperature sitting at 0.6 C | 33.08 F. The snow has melted a lot overnight and will continue to do so for most of the day. But in saying that, we could see a few flurries as the day moves forward. And it will begin to cool down later on tonight. Highway 522 is bare and wet this morning for most parts, which will make travelling pretty good. It’s still a little messy.

On another note, I finished up another Podcast yesterday. I bought a new microphone that my son recommended awhile back, and it works great, but sitting on my desk, and the way my desk was made, I couldn’t get close enough to it. So knowing that and the difficulty I was having I ordered a boom arm for it which is now helping a lot. I also ordered a few more things that will make it sound just that much better. Which should be delivered in a few days. Modern technology in the works here at the Walters, House. Ha Ha.

With that, I am off for a bowl of oatmeal and a piece of rasin-bread that my lovely wife is preparing for me. I don’t know what I would do without her. Hard-working woman. Take care and stay safe. GW

What’s Happening on Feb. 1/2022

Good morning! It’s a cloudy morning here in Port Loring, Ontario. We could see a glimpse of sunshine off and on throughout the day. We could also see some light flurries, but nothing to write home about. The temperature waking up was sitting at -4.8 C | 23.36 F. Not bad at all for this time of year, and it will warm up even more as the day progresses. Highway 522 is mostly bare, with a lot of slushy sections throughout. Not a good day for going anywhere, if you’re wanting to keep your car clean.

On another note, we haven’t had too many birds at our feeder for the past two days. I am thinking they are hiding out somewhere where it’s warm. But we are still getting some Blue Jays and Morning Doves. I have also noticed that we haven’t seen many Woodpeckers this year for some reason.

Yesterday I worked away here on my computer, as I will be doing today. Got a few things that needs doing. Other than that, not much else happening in and around our small town. So with that I am off for a bowl of cereal and a piece of homemade raisin bread that my lovely wife is making me and will then get to work. Take care and stay safe. GW

What’s Happening January 31/2022

HI Folks. How you all doing this morning? Good I hope. It’s a cloudy morning here in Port Loring Ontario. The temperature has risen through the night, sitting at -12 C | 10.4 F. Not too bad for the last day of January. And it will continue to be on the warm side into tomorrow and the day after. Temperatures tomorrow and the next day will be above the freezing mark … so we should get rid of some of our snow. Highway 522 is partially snow covered with some icy sections throughout this morning. We are also seeing some light flurries, but the sunshine should break through as the day progresses. Great day for the snowmobiles.

On another note, I didn’t do all that much yesterday. I had some work to do in the basement and helped my lovely wife around the house here. Today I will get into another podcast which will keep my mind busy, which is what is needed when you get my age. With that, I am off for some pancakes that my little woman is making me, which should give me the energy needed to make it through the morning. Ha Ha. Take care. GW

What’s Happening on January 30/2022

Good Morning! It’s a cloudy morning here in Port Loring, Ontario. We didn’t have any more snow overnight. Which is fine with me. Also, the cold that we were having has left us, and I suspect it will remain that way now for the remainder of the winter. Oh, we will get a cold night from time to time, but the real cold I think is behind us. But hey, you never know what Mother Nature has in store. The temperature getting out of bed was sitting at -17.6 C | 0.32 F. It will warm up as the day progresses, and we could see a wee bit of snow throughout the day.

On another note, I noticed the snowmobiles are out and about with the trails being open. Nice to see folks out enjoying life for a change. Yesterday, my lovely wife and I went to town to pick up our groceries that we ordered online. With so many being sick these days, we figured it’s best to stay out of all the stores we can. Least for now.

We did notice that there wasn’t as many people going into the stores while we were there, but there were a lot of cars in the parking lots. While there, we visited our son in the parking lot at his apartment, chatted a bit and dropped off a few things his Mother made for him. After that, we found a nice spot where we could watch what the other half is doing and ate our lunch. After that, we headed on home, enjoying a coffee along with the scenery. There is always lots to see along the way, and we enjoy it a lot. We also enjoy getting out of the house from time to time so that we can breathe some different air.

With that, I am off for a bowl of cereal and will then settle in working on a story or two I have in mind.

Oh, and we had 15 Doves at our bird feeder having breakfast this morning. They are our favourite birds along with the crows. Fun to watch them. Take care and stay safe.

What’s happening On January 28/2022

Good Morning! It’s another cold morning here in Port Loring Ontario. However, the sun is shinning, which makes it look nice. Yesterday and through the night we had another 8-10 inches of snow. More in drifts. Actually, I have one drift in front of our house that is about three feet deep. Highway 522 is snow and ice covered, but the snowplow has been through. So being a sunny day, and if you have snow tires on, and your car will start … you’re good to go. Ha Ha.

Yesterday I worked most of the day here on some stories and things. Which kept me busy. Today, my lovely wife and I will be busy all morning cleaning out the driveway along with our decks. It shouldn’t be too bad, as the snow we had is on the lite side.

With that, I am off for a bowl of oatmeal and a piece of toast. Take care and stay safe. Seems every day more are dying from this virus. Yesterday it was over 70. If this keeps up, 2100 will be dying every month in Ontario alone.

What’s Happening on January 27/2022

Good Morning! It’s a cloudy morning here in Port Loring, Ontario. We didn’t have any snow overnight, but we are getting some now. It is also quite windy out, causing a lot of drifting. I suspect we will have to clean our driveway tomorrow if this keeps up. The snow will continuer for most of the day and into tonight. Highway 522 is snow covered along with a lot of icy sections throughout. I kind of think it would be a good day to stay home. And on top of all that, the temperature tonight will drop to -21F/-30C. So … we are going to have a mixed bag of weather today.

On another note, I didn’t do all that much yesterday, being so cold outside. Kind of took it easy. But today I will be working away here on my Computer, on a few projects I have on the go. Which should keep me busy for most of the day. When it gets cold, like it has been, I don’t feel much like going outside or to my woodworking shop for that matter. When things warms up a touch, I will maybe get to working on some woodworking projects we have in mind. So with that. I am off for a bagel this morning and will then see what the day has in store … other than what I have planned.

Take Care and Stay Safe. The virus isn’t getting much better here in Ontario. There are a lot of sick people out there at the moment. What you see, hear or read, is only a half of what is really taking place, as there is no way that they can keep track of things now. It’s gotten way out of hand. And to top that, we now have a new variant BA.2 heading our way. Boy, I am full of good news this morning. But it is in what you make it. GW

Update: Ontario reported 70 more COVID-19 deaths today!

What’s Happening on January 26/2022

Good Morning. It’s a very cold morning here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. Truth be told, it’s the coldest we have had it so far this winter.

Being that I had to get up through the night, I took a few readings of what the temperatures were.

-29.4 C | -20.92 F 12:30 AM
-32.4 C | -26.32 F 3:08 AM
-33.8 C | -28.84 F 5:06 AM
-34.8 C | -30.64 F 7:12 AM

And right at the moment at 8:52 AM it is sitting at -34 C | -29.2 F. I hope you had your car plugged in, or made sure your antifreeze was up to snuff. It will warm up a touch as the day moves forward. But it will take a while. Highway 522 is snow and ice covered, so care will have to be taken if out and about. We didn’t have any more snow overnight, but we could see another inch or two, starting tomorrow sometime, and into tomorrow night. Winter is here in Port Loring.

On another note, being so cold, my lovely wife and I did have to get up more often through the night to feed our wood furnace. But for most parts, one of us usually wakes up anyway. If I get up, I put the wood in … if she gets up, she does the same. Seems after all these years we have it down pat. Ha Ha.

Yesterday we worked all morning clearing snow from our driveway, decks, along with helping our neighbour. One thing is for certain … there is no need for going for walks, or buying exercise equipment to stay fit these days. Ha Ha.

So with that bit of information under your hat, I am off for some bacon and eggs this morning that my lovely wife is making me. Just felt like something different. Take care, stay fit and be safe. More people are dying every day, because of this virus. Some days we are over the 60 mark. And that is just here in Ontario. Amazes me that some still say that this virus is all a conspiracy, along with other ridiculous accusations. But it’s par for the course these days. Will it get better? Not likely. GW

What’s Happening on January 25/2022

Good Morning! It’s a cold morning here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. The temperature waking up was sitting at -21.6 C | -6.88 F. It will warm up a wee bit but not much. However, the sun is shinning, which, if nothing else, makes it look nice outside. Highway 522 is snow and ice covered once again this morning. So care will be needed if out and about. We did have another 8 inches of snow yesterday. Which means I know what my lovely wife and I will be doing this morning. The good news is it isn’t heavy snow, so it shouldn’t be too bad to move around. Yesterday I worked away here in my computer on a few things, making it easier to move around. I also kept the Woodworking shop going, which kept me busy feeding it. Ha Ha. Other than that, not much else happening in and around our area. I still haven’t seen that many snowmobiles out and about. Maybe February will bring them out. With that, I am off for a bowl of oatmeal this morning and will then get to moving some snow. Take care and stay safe. GW

What’s Happening on January 24/2022

Good Morning! It’s a cloudy morning here in Port Loring Ontario. And I suspect it will remain that way for most of the day. It isn’t that cold, though, as the temperature getting out of bed was sitting at -15.3 C | 4.46 F. Great day for the snowmobiles. Truth be told I haven’t seen all that many this year, if any it’s locals. I suspect that this virus is taking its toll on folks, keeping some at home, not feeling so good. A lot of people I know in Southern Ontario have come down with the new variant Omicron. They all had the vaccine, which helped them fend it off. Some said they didn’t even know they had it. So goes to prove the vaccines do work. Highway 522 is snow covered with icy sections throughout once again, but that is a norm for our area this time of year. With all the cold and snow we have been having in the past month, it is beginning to look a lot more like Port Loring. As the old saying goes; If anyone gets snow, it will be Port Loring. Yesterday we did get our driveway cleaned out, and our decks cleaned off from the snow we had the day before yesterday. Along with helping our neighbour next door. Took us most of the morning. The snow blower that my sons bought me a few years ago works slick and makes things a lot easier. The good part of it was that the snow was light, so it was easy to move. Today we will take it easy, and relax a bit. My wife is busy working on some painting orders, and I might work on another podcast. I will see how I feel after I have had my breakfast. With that, take care, and stay safe.

What’s Happening On January 23/2022

Good morning! It’s a cold morning here in Port Loring, Ontario. The temperature climbing out of bed was sitting at -23.2 C | -9.76 F. It will become a bit warmer as the day progresses. We could also see another 4 inches of snow tonight and into tomorrow. Yesterday we had around 6 inches or so along with some pretty high drifts, caused by the winds that accompanied the snow. At the moment here it is sunny, but very cold. Highway 522 is snow covered with icy sections throughout.

On another note, yesterday I worked away here in my computer getting familiar with some technical stuff. Lots to learn in that department if you want to. The neat part about it, is you don’t have to go to school anymore to learn these things, as everything is right there in front of you. Makes it nice. I would suspect the day is coming that schools as we see them now will be obsolete. Can you imagine the money we would save? The problem there is. What would our powers, that be, do with it. Right now I don’t feel they are doing the right thing, sending money to this country and that country. I did notice that now they have a new way of doing things. Saying the money is on loan. Ha Ha. In my eyes, that is the last we will ever see of it. But hey I could be wrong…..

So with that I am off for some waffles that my lovely wife is making me, and once it warms up a touch, we will get to cleaning out our driveway and decks. That will keep us busy for the morning along with giving us some exercise. Take care and stay warm. GW

What’s Happening On January 22/2022

Good Morning! First off I want to say Thank You!!

For reading my Blog … For Listening to My Podcasts … For taking the time to look around and reading more than just one post …. but most importantly, for making an effort to say hello. It means a lot.

Moving along … Highway 522 is snow covered this morning, with lots of icy sections throughout, so care will be needed if out and about. We didn’t have any snow overnight, but we are starting to get it now. I suspect we will get another 4 inches or so, maybe a touch more. Depends on whether, the storm front stays on the course it is now, coming in from the South West. So … we will have to see how that goes. It has also warmed up some, with the temperature getting out of bed sitting at -12.1 C | 10.22 F. But don’t think it will remain that way, as things are going to start getting colder once again in a couple of days or so.

On another note, I started my stove in the old woodworking shop this morning once again. I like to do so, especially if I feel there is a storm heading our way, as in doing so my generator, and snow blower will be ready to go if needed. And with the winds we have been having, and living in the country that we do, you need to be prepared for what could happen.

Yesterday I worked away finishing up a story or two I had on the go. Today I will start on another few that I have in mind. Once I get on a roll, I like to keep it up. Ha ha. So with that I am off for some bacon and eggs this morning, and I might have a cup of tea for a change to wash things down. Not that I am a tea lover mind ya, but every so often the urge for something different hits.

Take care and stay safe. I see we had another 70 here in Ontario that died from this virus yesterday. Saddens me. GW

What’s Happening, January 20/2022

So how’s everyone doing on this cold January Morning. It is cold with the temperature sitting at -26.9 C | -16.42 F. So cold I had to add a few extra pieces of firewood to my wood furnace though the night. We can always tell, even before checking the temperature, that it is below normal by the way the windows are frozen up getting out of bed. Which is a good thing, as it means our Humidifier is working properly. That’s the only issue with wood heat, you have to make sure you have humidity in the house. We have a good Humidifier that was made in Germany, not the cheapest, but it works fantastic, and you don’t have to buy filters for it. We also have a lot of plants which not only adds humidity, but they also clean the air giving off fresh oxygen which helps us stay healthy. There is nothing better, health wise, than having a lot of plants in every room in your home. I wouldn’t hesitate to bet that most homes, today, doesn’t have any plants. In some ways, it’s unsettling seeing how our world today is changing. If there is anyone wanting a couple plants, we have lots, and we would be more than happy to give you a couple. They are always having young ones that needs a good home. Highway 522 is about half covered with snow this morning, and there are a lot of icy sections throughout. So care will have to be taken if you’re travelling today. We did have another inch of snow yesterday, after the 6 to 8 inches we got the night before. So … there is lots of the white stuff for them snowmobiles to slide around on. At the moment, though, I would think it is too cold for them to be roaming around. But then again, they do have some fancy snowmobile suits these days. I would suspect they are expensive too. Yesterday it took my lovely wife and i most of the morning to clean out our driveway and decks, along with helping out our neighbour friend cleaning her deck and car. She is a nice lady for sure. We couldn’t have a better neighbour. I give her a lot of credit as she is 90 some years young, still driving and doing things all on her own. Amazing. I would have to say she has led a good life. With that, I am off for a Raisin Bagel this morning that my wife is preparing, and will then get to finishing this podcast that I have on the go. I will post it tomorrow morning. Take care, stay safe, and wear a good mask at all times, as this virus is sure taking its toll on us here in Ontario at the moment. Over 60 died yesterday, caused by the virus. And I am thinking a lot could have been prevented. I feel for them and their families. GW

Update: Ontario added another 75 virus-related fatalities to its overall death toll today.

What’s Happening/ January 19/2022

How you all doing this morning? Good I hope. We didn’t get the snow that they said we would get overnight, but we did get around 6 inches. We could see a wee bit throughout the day, but I don’t suspect it will amount to much. Maybe another inch. Highway 522 is snow covered in a lot of areas, so care will have to be taken if out and about. The snow we did have is wet and heavy, so … us older folks should be careful when trying to move it. It’s the kind of snow that messes up our old backs. The good news is it is mild outside, with the temperature getting out of bed sitting at 0.5 C | 32.9 F. Seeing these temperatures one would think that we are in for a January thaw, but it won’t remain warm for long, as tonight the temperature will drop substantially. So I am thinking later on when I work up enough energy I will clean out our driveway before it freezes solid. Yesterday I worked all day on a new Podcast and if things goes to plan it should be ready for Friday. All depends on how I feel. Being the age I am, you never know, LOL. I might not like what a day might bring, but, I accept it, and make the best of it. No use sitting around brewing about things, as that doesn’t help one bit. With that, I am off for a bowl of Oatmeal this morning along with a piece of toast that my lovely wife is making me. Whole Flake Oatmeal or as we called it years ago … Porridge, seems to stick to your ribs for a while, and is loaded with all kinds of good things, which gives you the energy you need to get things done. Ha Ha. Take care and stay safe. This virus these days is sure taking its toll on us humans. In Ontario alone, we are having over 20 some deaths every day. Today January 19th we had over 60 Deaths caused by the virus. And some say this virus is nothing. Makes me shake my head. GW

What’s happening? January 18/2022

Good Morning! We are having some sunshine here in Port Loring, Ontario, this morning. But it is cold, with the temperature sitting at -21.1 C | -5.98 F. It will warm up a wee bit as the day progresses, but not much. Tonight however it will warm up substantially, and we could see the temperature rise above the freezing mark tomorrow. But that will be short-lived as the temperatures will fall very quickly one again tomorrow night. Later on today and through the night, we could see around 4 inches of new snow, along with some more for tomorrow. So … we got a mixed bag of weather heading our way. But looking at things, it’s been that way for a while now. As of now, Highway 522 is bare and dry, but that will change later on today. So if you have anything planned, it might pay to do it this morning. On another note, yesterday I worked away here on the Blog. Got a lot done with the help of my son Karl. Today I will get back to writing up stories for my newspaper columns, along with some podcasts. I like to get them out of the way through the winter months, as come summer I hate being stuck inside the house. Especially when fishing season arrives. Talking about fishing, we haven’t been out in our boat for two years now. First with this darn virus and second when we did head on out last fall, we had some trailer and motor trouble. This year, I am hoping things will be better. I did have Kerry, my friend, who owns Booth’s Garage here in town fix up my boat trailer and get me a new battery, so things should be good in that department. If there is one thing I enjoy, it is fishing with my buddy Barry. Who I haven’t seen that much since this virus entered into the picture. I am beginning to have Barry withdrawals. Ha Ha. With that, I am off for a piece of toast with my lovely wife, and will then get to work. Take care and stay safe. GW

What’s happening? January 17/2022

Good Morning! It’s a cloudy morning here in Port Loring, Ontario. The temperature getting out of bed was sitting at -14.4 C | 6.08 F. It won’t warm up much more than it is now. Highway 522 is mostly bare, so travelling will be good. Although we could see some light snow off and on throughout the day. We didn’t have any more snow overnight. But the good news is that, the real cold weather has left us for a day or so. Makes me happy, as my old body doesn’t like the cold that much anymore. If it wasn’t for this virus, my lovely wife and I would be sitting in the sunny south. But the way it stands now, that isn’t about to happen. It’s risky enough right here at home. On another note, I got a lot of work done here yesterday on my computer. Today I will do the same. I am setting up a few things to make the Blog better, with the help of my son. It’s nice to have a technologist that knows almost everything there is to know about computers at arms length. So to speak. Actually, he does most things remotely from his apartment, along with guiding me over the phone. It’s pretty amazing how far we have come over the past few years. With that, I am off for some pancakes that my lovely wife is making me, and will then see what the day has planned other than what I am wanting to do. Life’s a mystery. You never know. Take care and stay safe. GW

What’s happening? January 15/2022

Good Morning! It’s a down right cold morning here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. The temperature getting out of bed was sitting at -30.2 C | -22.36 F. It will warm up a bit as the day progresses, but not that much. We didn’t have any more snow overnight. Highway 522 is partially snow covered, with some icy sections throughout. So once again, care should be taken if out and about. In saying that, when we went to town the other day we found that even though we were going the speed limit, almost everyone was passing us. I guess they can’t wait to get to Tim Hortons. There are a lot of people ice fishing these days, as I see a lot of ice shacks out on the lakes. I am not into ice fishing anymore, as the real cold seems to bother me these days. Sign of the time, I suppose. On another note, I noticed we had a few deer overnight checking out our bird feeder. They clean up all the excess seed that the birds knock off the bird feeder throughout the day. One thing about living in the country, nothing much goes to waste. Yesterday being so cold, I stayed inside where it was warm. Today I will do the same. With that, I am off to put some more wood in our furnace and will then see what the day has in store. I haven’t made up my mind yet on what I want to do. Actually, it’s nice being able to do that. In closing,

I would also like to take a sec and thank all those that have taken the time to say hello, here on the BLog and through E-Mails, letting me know they are enjoying the Blog and my Podcasts. Makes it all worthwhile. Take care and stay safe.

What’s happening? January 14/2022

Good Morning! Starting things off, it is a cold morning here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. The temperature climbing out of bed was sitting at -24.8 C | -12.64 F. It won’t warm up much more than it is today. Tonight it will be even colder, so an extra blanket might be in order. Highway 522 has some icy snow covered areas throughout, but travelling will be good. We could also see some light snow later on this afternoon. To be honest … this time of year here in Port Loring, you can expect pretty well anything. And you should be prepared for just about anything. That’s what living in the north is all about. On another note, my lovely wife and I decided that … since it was going to get colder, that we should go and pick up our groceries in North Bay yesterday. Which we did. We have gone back to ordering things online as we were doing before when this virus slowed down some. So all we had to do was pull up in front of the places we deal with, give them a call, and they bring it out to our car. Can’t beat that. But the best part is we don’t have to subject ourselves to a whole mess of people inside the stores. Which I think is the thing to be doing these days. While there, we dropped by our son’s apartment, and see him in his parking lot, as he is staying safe too. Dropped him off a few things and then chatted to him on the phone along the way home. We also ordered some food, and ate it in our car, taking in the city life. It’s good to see what the other half is doing once in a while. Not that we would want such a lifestyle. Not saying it is a bad way to live, but it’s not for us. I have to admit, we had a great day and enjoyed getting out of the house for a few hours. The scenery that Mother Natures has on display is always nice to see. Today I think I will work away on another podcast, oh damn It’s Friday already, I guess I need to put up the next Episode. I will do that right now. I hope you enjoy it. Take care and stay safe. GW

What’s happening? January 13/2022

Good Morning! It’s another cloudy morning here in Port Loring Ontario. We did have around an inch of light snow through the night. Nothing to stop you from going anywhere if you have to go anywhere .I did see a few snowmobiles out and about yesterday, making their way through the trails behind my house. Nice to see. My wife and I are staying put these days with the way this new virus is spreading. Eventually I am sure everyone will get it, but staying put will help the hospitals, doctors and nurses a bit, which is what is needed at the moment. I think once it reaches it peak, meaning almost everyone has caught it … it then will drop as fast as it started. Highway 522 has a few, snow covered areas along with some icy sections throughout. Tonight things will become darn cold again, and stay that way for the next three days. After that, things should moderate. Yesterday I managed to write up a couple stories for my columns and today will probably do the same. With that, I am off for a bagel this morning with my lovely wife. Take care and stay safe.
