What’s happening? January 11/2022

Good Morning from a cold Port Loring. And it sure is a cold one this morning. Climbing out of bed, the temperature was sitting at -33.8 C | -28.84 F. That’s cold by any standard. The wind is coming in from the East, North East. Highway 522 is partly snow covered, along with a few icy sections. So care should be taken if out and about. If asked, I would recommend everyone staying inside this morning till things warm up a bit. Or at the very least dress extra warm if you have to go out. The good part is almost everyone wears a mask these days, which will help breathing in the cold air. LOL. I did walk over to my woodworking shop to feed my stove a bit ago. I was glad to get back in where it was warm. I wouldn’t want to have to work outside today. On another note, I didn’t do much yesterday, kind of a lazy day. Today being so cold, I will work away on another story or two, and maybe start a new Podcast. I will have to see how I feel. Some days I feel like writing, some days I don’t. The good part is that these days, I can do what I want, no pressure. Occasionally, that isn’t a good thing. LOL, With that I am off to feed my wood furnace here in the house. It has been running steadily all night. I did have to get up three times through the night, as it got hungry. Which didn’t bother me any, as being the age I am, I usually get up anyway. It’s nice and toasty in here. Nothing like wood heat, especially in this kind of weather. Just to let you know, as some have asked. It only took six pieces of hardwood to heat the whole house and basement overnight. Can’t beat that. Now I am off for some waffles that my lovely wife is making me. She sure makes them tasty. Take care and stay safe. GW

What’s happening? January 10/2022

Good Morning. Starting things off here this morning, the temperature has dropped a lot since yesterday. Waking up, it was sitting at -17.6 C | 0.32 F. It won’t warm up much more as the day progresses, but we should see some sunshine. It should be noted that tonight will be very cold, so I would think that everyone should take caution and not to forget to plug your car in, and put an extra blanket on your bed before going to bed tonight. Highway 522 is partially ice and snow covered in certain areas, so care should be taken if out and about. I haven’t seen too many deer crossing the highway these days, but I have seen two Moose. They weren’t crossing the highway when I saw them out by Farleys Corners. On another note, I stoked up my wood stove in my Old Woodworking shop this morning and lit our wood furnace in the house here. We sure like our Newmac Wood Furnace, easy to operate and saves us a ton of wood compared to the wood furnace we had before this one. You know, thinking of wood stoves and furnaces, there hasn’t ever been a house we owned that didn’t have some form of wood heat. Anyway, I am off for an English Muffin this morning with my lovely wife for a change, and will then work on a couple more stories I have in mind. Take care and stay safe. This new virus is sure taking a toll on folks these days. Even some hospitals are closing down, as It’s starting to spread through them.

What’s happening? January 9, 2022

Good Morning! It’s a cloudy gloomy day here in Port Loring Ontario, Canada. At the moment, we are having some freezing rain mixed with snow, along with some windy conditions in certain areas. We didn’t have any snow accumulations overnight. Which is a good thing in part, but the freezing rain takes away the good end of things for travelling at least. Highway 522 has a lot of icy sections throughout, with some snow covered areas thrown in for good measure. The temperature isn’t as cold today, hovering around the freezing mark. 0 C | 32 F. The one thing that we have to be aware of is, or should be aware of … is that tonight things are going to cool off a lot. And tomorrow will be colder. And tomorrow night will be the coldest night of the year, or the coldest one so far. Temperatures could get down to -34 C/-30 F, possibly even colder. Don’t let today fool you with it being warmer, as Mother Nature can be cruel when she wants to be. So I would suggest that you set your sights on preparing for this cold that is entering into the picture while things are mild. Along with this cold that is heading our way, we could see some high winds which will make it touch and go for our hydro. The thing is, since our Powers That Be has sold most of Ontario Hydro to outsiders, the trees haven’t been looked after like they used to be. Preventative maintenance has been lacking in a lot of areas. Which in turn causes a lot of problems when the weather gets bad, especially in areas like ours. Par for the course, though. On another note, I let my wood furnace go out last night, so that I could clean the ashes out of it and get it ready for what’s to come, and then I will re-light it later on this afternoon when the temperature starts to drop. I might also start my shop stove, as that is where I keep my generator, and it starts a lot easier when warm. Just in case we might need it. It has come in real handy so far this year. With that bit of information under your hat, and you should be wearing a hat in this part of the country … I am off for a bowl of cereal with my lovely wife. After that, I shall get to work. Take care. GW
