George Walters is a Canadian columnist and author with more than forty years of writing experience. For over twenty years he has written a weekly column for Postmedia Network — Canada's largest newspaper chain — never missing a single week, publishing fifty-two stories a year. Combined with his work in Reader's Digest Community Voices, World News, Country Living, The Country Register, and farm and rural lifestyle magazines across Canada, he has published well over two thousand stories drawn from everyday life. He writes about farm work, fishing, old trucks, and the kind of people you only find in small towns — but just as likely he'll hand a voice to a weathered telephone pole, or turn his eye on something happening in the world today and tell you exactly what he thinks about it. No subject is off limits. If there's a story in it, George will find it. He has been called a philosopher of everyday life, a description that came up more than once during his television appearances over the years — and it's not hard to see why. His writing has a way of making the ordinary feel worth sitting with. He is the author of eleven books, including yearly short story collections and the Clay Moretti Files mystery series. Clay is a fifty-year-old private investigator who drives a 1967 Ford Galaxie, smokes cigars, and operates by a code the modern world gave up on a long time ago. The cases are present day. The man handling them is not. All titles are available in paperback and eBook on Amazon. Together, George and his wife Ruth have also created Elmer Finds His Way, the first in what he hopes will be a long series of children's books. Ruth did all the illustrations, as she has for every one of George's books — and beyond that she designed and painted the covers as well. Her work is woven into every page of everything he has published. A few words from readers: "I pulled up a kitchen chair and read your story three times." "You have a way of making a person homesick for a place they haven't been to." "Thank you for writing things that make old people and kids feel the same way at the same time." All my titles are available in paperback and eBook on Amazon.ca here.

Frost Warning

Thought I would mention that we could experience an intense frost overnight and into the early morning hours here in Port Loring Ontario.  If you have any tender plants in your garden I would suggest you cover them.  Temperatures will fall below 0 Celsius  with clear skies.

Happenings In And Around Port Loring

Good Morning: Well still a bit cool here in Port Loring.  Waking up temperatures were sitting at 7.6 C | 45.68 F.  Will warm up some shortly.

Forecast For Today:  We will have some sunshine along with some clouds throughout most of the day.  There is a chance of a passing shower later on this afternoon and into tonight.

Bug Report:  Lots of blackflies in our area annoying folks which will last for a few more weeks.  Once the dragon flies make their appearance they will be quickly eliminated as the blackflies are their main source of food.

Highway Report:  Highway 522 from east to west is bare and dry.  Travelling is good.

Fishing Information:  This morning the old weather stick is saying that the best times to be out there will be from 7:30 AM – 10:30 AM.  Then again later on this afternoon from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM.  I give it a 4 fish rating out of 5 for catching a few this morning and 5 fish rating out of 5 this afternoon.  Great day to bring a few in.  Winds are calm this morning coming in from the South South West.  Good Luck!

Around Town:  Few cars in our area but for most parts things are quiet.  Will pick up some with the American Holiday approaching.  Great to see our USA friends edging their way back into our area for the summer.  On another note I did get my gardens tilled up for the first time yesterday.  Looks good and once things warm up a touch at night, it will be a good growing season.  Nothing like fresh tilled soil to enlighten a feller.  Tea time here.  Orange Pekoe this morning with a touch of fresh dandelion roots taken from our yard earlier this morning.  Enjoy your day in ways that suits you best.   You can reach George Walters if you so wish at [email protected]

Happenings In And Around Port Loring Ontario

Good Morning:  Cool morning waking up with temperatures sitting at 1.5 C | 34.7 F.  Started the furnace this morning for a wee bit.

Forecast For Today:  Possible shower early, improving as the day moves forward.  Should see lots of sunshine today.  Will remain a bit cool but will warm up some later on this morning.

Bug Report:  Blackflies are in abundance these days.

Highway Report:  Highway 522 id bare and dry.  Not much traffic moving either way.  Long weekend is over and folks are back home heading off to work.  Travelling will be good today weather wise.

Fishing Times:  This morning the old weather stick along with my Grandfathers formula is saying that the best times to be out there with pole in hand will be from 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM.  Then once again from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM.  I give it a 3 fish rating out of 5 for catching a few today.  Wind this morning is calm coming in from the North West.  Good Luck!

Around Town:  Thinking this morning that I might just work up the vegetable garden so the soil can breath for a few days before planting.  Will see how things goes after my morning tea.  I in all honesty I never know where the day will bring me.  Seems I get started on one thing and off I go on another.  For years I questioned my agenda’s but today I just let things happen.  I believe that if a change is made without thought it is something that needs to happen.  If we interfere with this change it would be changing ones destiny.  We all have a path in life, it’s just that some choose the wrong ones.   Enjoy your day, stay safe.  You can reach George Walters if you so wish at [email protected]

Happenings In And Around Port Loring Ontario

Good Morning:  Cool morning here in Port Loring Ontario.  Waking up temperatures were sitting at 8.8 C | 47.84 F.  Will remain cool all day and into tomorrow.

Forecast For Today: Rather unsettled clearing later on in the day.  Should see some sunshine later on and tomorrow.

Bug Report:  Few blackflies out there annoying folks.  Mosquitoes are still in the minority.  But that will change.

Highway Report:  Highway 522 is bare and dry throughout.  Travelling will be good.

Fishing Report:  This morning the old weather stick put together with my Grandfathers formula is saying that the best times to be out there with pole in hand will be from 7:00 AM – 11:00 AM.  Then again a bit later from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM.  I give it a 3 fish rating out of 5 for catching a few this morning and a 4 fish rating out of 5 this afternoon.  Winds are quite breezy coming in from the west.  Good luck!

Around Town:  Not to much to report.  Had a few folks drop by yesterday saying hello.  A couple I missed as I was busy working on some stories for the newspapers.  Sorry about that.  But I hear my wife looked after you.  On another note the vegetable gardens are now about ready to work up.  I have been waiting for dryer weather.  Planting won’t be done till the weekend when things start to warm up for the evening hours.  All this week we are going to be having some very cool nights. Over the years I have found it doesn’t pay to get to carried away with planting early.  After the 24th and the full moon has served me well over the years and saved me a lot of work, grief and expense.  Tea time here.  Thinking dandelion freshly dug with a touch of English breakfast.  Good for what ails you in all avenues.  Have a great day.   You can reach George Walters at [email protected]

Happenings In & Around Port Loring Ontario

Good Morning:  Well starting off things were a bit wet.  Had a good rain  in the early morning hours.  Temperatures were and still are quite warm, sitting at 18.7 C | 65.66 F.

Forecast For Today: Stormy with cloudy conditions most the day.  Things will start to cool down quite rapidly later on tonight and into tomorrow.

Bug Report:  Blackflies are out in full force in most areas now.  In some areas it isn’t to bad.  Mosquitoes aren’t bothering many folks yet but they will enter into the picture shortly.

Highway Report:  Highway 522 is bare and wet throughout.  Travelling will be good today.

Fishing Information:  This morning the old weather stick is saying the best times to be out there will be from 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM.  I give it a 3 fish rating out of 5 for catching a few.  Winds this morning are coming in from the South South West.  At the moment they are calm.

Around Town:  Few new vehicals going up and down our highway over the weekend.  Being that the holiday weekend is in the middle of the month slows things down some.  Next weekend will be more presentable with folks waiting for the nicer weather.  Myself I believe the long weekend should be held on the 24th of May and not before.  Especially in our area.  At any rate, tea time here. Orange Pekoe  is on the menu for this Monday morning.  Enjoy your day.  You can reach George Walters at [email protected]
