George Walters is a Canadian columnist and author with more than forty years of writing experience. For over twenty years he has written a weekly column for Postmedia Network — Canada's largest newspaper chain — never missing a single week, publishing fifty-two stories a year. Combined with his work in Reader's Digest Community Voices, World News, Country Living, The Country Register, and farm and rural lifestyle magazines across Canada, he has published well over two thousand stories drawn from everyday life. He writes about farm work, fishing, old trucks, and the kind of people you only find in small towns — but just as likely he'll hand a voice to a weathered telephone pole, or turn his eye on something happening in the world today and tell you exactly what he thinks about it. No subject is off limits. If there's a story in it, George will find it. He has been called a philosopher of everyday life, a description that came up more than once during his television appearances over the years — and it's not hard to see why. His writing has a way of making the ordinary feel worth sitting with. He is the author of eleven books, including yearly short story collections and the Clay Moretti Files mystery series. Clay is a fifty-year-old private investigator who drives a 1967 Ford Galaxie, smokes cigars, and operates by a code the modern world gave up on a long time ago. The cases are present day. The man handling them is not. All titles are available in paperback and eBook on Amazon. Together, George and his wife Ruth have also created Elmer Finds His Way, the first in what he hopes will be a long series of children's books. Ruth did all the illustrations, as she has for every one of George's books — and beyond that she designed and painted the covers as well. Her work is woven into every page of everything he has published. A few words from readers: "I pulled up a kitchen chair and read your story three times." "You have a way of making a person homesick for a place they haven't been to." "Thank you for writing things that make old people and kids feel the same way at the same time." All my titles are available in paperback and eBook on Amazon.ca here.

Events & Things For Port Loring Ontario Canada

Good Morning:  Well another very cold morning. Waking up temperatures were sitting at -28.5 C | -19.3 F.  Not quite as cold as yesterday but still cold.

Forecast For Today: Unsettled, short fine intervals throughout the day. With the sunshine temperatures will warm up a bit later on this morning.  Should be a very nice day.

Highway Report:  Highway 522 has some bare sections along with some hard packed snow sections.  Care should be taken, but should be a great day for travelling, for those that choose to do so.

Ice Fishing Times:  This morning the old weather stick along with gathered data is saying the best times to be out there will be from 6:30 AM – 9:00 AM.  Then again a bit later on from 2:00 PM – 4:30 PM.  I give it a 2 fish rating out of 5 for catching a few.  Good Luck!

Around Town.  Yesterday a friend called that reads the Blog each morning.  He has a cottage out near Lost Channel.  He says the ice and things getting to his cottage was great.  So looks like the snowmobiles will be enjoying themselves for the remainder of the season. I would like to thank him for saying hello.    Great to see folks out an about taking in what Nature has to offer.  Nothing can be more beneficial to ones health than staying active and breathing in our fresh northern air.  So my friends, enjoy your day and stay warm. I am heading off for a talk-a-tea with my lovely wife.. Every morning we get to chattin’, and you know…we are good at it.  You can reach me George Walters if you so wish at; [email protected]

Happenings In & Around Town

Good Morning: Very cold morning here waking up here in Port Loring Ontario Canada.  Temperatures were sitting at -29.7 C | -21.46 F.   Fellow would have to put on a coat before going outside this morning.

Forecast For Today: Changeable early, then mending as the day moves forward.

Highway Report:  Highway 522 does have some bare sections here and there for a change. But there is still lots of hard packed snow and icy sections throughout.  Other than that it is a nice sunny day and travelling should be fine.

Ice Fishing Times;  This morning the old weather stick is saying that the best times to be out there will be from 8:45 AM – 11:30 AM.  Then once again later on from 3:00 PM – 5:30 PM.  I give it a 2 fish rating out of 5 for catching a few.  Good Luck!

Around Town:  Not much happening in and around town.  These cold temperatures are keeping folks inside.  Can’t say I blame them.  On the good side of the coin these cold temperatures will keep any colds and flu’s away which is a good thing.  The colder it gets the less sickness.  Amazing isn’t it, with all our modern day medicines, flu shots, you name it and along comes Mother Nature and fixes things up all on her own, in a Natural way without any help from us humans.  So my friends heading off for a cup of tea and then see where the day takes the wife and I.  A new day with new beginnings.  Exciting really if you choose to take a look at things.  You can reach me George Walters if you so wish at [email protected]

Happenings In & Around Port Loring Ontario

Good Morning:  Well not too bad a morning here weather wise.  Temperatures waking up were sitting at -14.6 C | 5.72 F.  Will remain there for most the day.

Forecast For Today: Changeable, mending as the day moves forward.  For all of Port Loring’s weather information you can click here;  http://www.loringlsb.ca/weather-station/

Highway Report:  Highway 522 is still mostly covered with hard packed snow.  There are some icy sections but if care is taken travelling should be fine.

Ice Fishing Times;  This morning the old weather stick is saying that the best times to be out there will be from 7:30 AM – 9:45 AM.  Then once again a bit later on from 2:00 PM – 4:45 PM.  I give it a 3 fish rating out of 5 for catching a few.  Good Luck!

Around Town:  Most business’s are slow these days. But it is to be expected at this time of year.  Others are taking it easy enjoying the sunshine in the warmer climates such as Florida.  I give them credit for enjoying life as it should be.  All work and no play isn’t what life is about.  In reality life is about enjoyment, learning and the fulfilment of how one makes use of each day.  It’s unfortunate that  for most money has become the priority of life, seeking it out in every possible way.   Money is needed yes,  but it shouldn’t be the reason for living. My opinion only.  You can reach me George Walters if you so wish at;  [email protected]

Happenings In And Around Port Loring Ontario Canada

Good Morning:  Well a pretty nice day temperature wise.  Waking up it was sitting at      0.6 C | 33.08 F.  Should remain there most the day.

Forecast For Today: Stormy, may improve as the day moves forward.

Highway Report:   Highway 522 is pretty well covered with hard packed snow with icy sections throughout.  Care should be taken if travelling.  Snowplough just went by the house here clearing off some of the slush.

Ice Fishing Times:  Today the old weather stick is saying that the best times to be out there will be from 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM.  Then again from 2:30 PM – 5:00 PM.  I give it a 5 fish rating out of 5 for catching a few.  No reason not to be having fish for supper.  Good Luck!

Around Town:  Quiet events and business wise.  On another note though.  With this warm weather that is upon us today, it gives a person a great chance to do some outside work that might be in need of some attention.  Myself I am going to take advantage of it and wash our car as it is a mess.  One trip to North Bay sure takes a toll on it.  Good to get the salt and things off it whenever you can.  Also I have found if a person washes the disc brakes off as many times as they can, when arriving back home, it sure saves on the brake jobs. I would say just by doing that you would cut the replacements in half.  Today the cars have everything right out in the open, where the salt and dirt can get right at them  Food for thought one might say.  Enjoy your day my friends and if nothing else try and get out for a bit of fresh air.  Tomorrow we are back to the cold temperatures.   You can reach me George Walters if you so wish at [email protected]

Happenings Around Town

Good Morning:  Well hope everyone is well on this fine Saturday morning.   Did warm up a touch over night to -19 C | -2.2 F.  It will continue to warm up even more as the day moves forward.

Forecast For Today:  Stormy with snow entering into the picture around noon.  Could get a few inches.  Tomorrow temperatures will warm up to around 2 C / 35 F.  So some melting will be with us for a day or so.

Ice Fishing Times:  This morning the old weather stick is saying that the best times to be out there will be from 7:00 AM – 9:30 AM.  Then once again from 3:00 PM – 4:45 PM.   I give it a 5 fish rating out of 5 for catching a few this morning and a 4 fish rating for catching them this afternoon.  Good Luck!

Highway Report:  Highway 522 is ploughed and well sanded.  But it still had a lot of icy sections with hard packed snow throughout.  I made a trip to Powassan yesterday taking in the sunshine and found it was quite slippery.  So care should be taken if travelling.

Around Town:  Got nothing to report here this morning.  Hardly a car moving up and down the highway.  Kind of think folks are sleeping in with it being so dark in the early morning hours.  Enjoy your day my friends.  You can reach me George Walters if you so wish at [email protected]
