George Walters is a Canadian columnist and author with more than forty years of writing experience. For over twenty years he has written a weekly column for Postmedia Network — Canada's largest newspaper chain — never missing a single week, publishing fifty-two stories a year. Combined with his work in Reader's Digest Community Voices, World News, Country Living, The Country Register, and farm and rural lifestyle magazines across Canada, he has published well over two thousand stories drawn from everyday life. He writes about farm work, fishing, old trucks, and the kind of people you only find in small towns — but just as likely he'll hand a voice to a weathered telephone pole, or turn his eye on something happening in the world today and tell you exactly what he thinks about it. No subject is off limits. If there's a story in it, George will find it. He has been called a philosopher of everyday life, a description that came up more than once during his television appearances over the years — and it's not hard to see why. His writing has a way of making the ordinary feel worth sitting with. He is the author of eleven books, including yearly short story collections and the Clay Moretti Files mystery series. Clay is a fifty-year-old private investigator who drives a 1967 Ford Galaxie, smokes cigars, and operates by a code the modern world gave up on a long time ago. The cases are present day. The man handling them is not. All titles are available in paperback and eBook on Amazon. Together, George and his wife Ruth have also created Elmer Finds His Way, the first in what he hopes will be a long series of children's books. Ruth did all the illustrations, as she has for every one of George's books — and beyond that she designed and painted the covers as well. Her work is woven into every page of everything he has published. A few words from readers: "I pulled up a kitchen chair and read your story three times." "You have a way of making a person homesick for a place they haven't been to." "Thank you for writing things that make old people and kids feel the same way at the same time." All my titles are available in paperback and eBook on Amazon.ca here.

Happenings In & Around Port Loring Ontario Canada

Good Morning:  Well another cold morning here in Port Loring.  But on the bright side the sun is shinning down upon us.

Forecast For Today: Snowy early, then improving.  Will also warm up a touch for the next two days with some snow moving in after that.

Ice Fishing Times;  This morning the old weather stick is saying that the best times to be out there will be from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM.  Then once again a bit later from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM.  I give it a 3 fish rating out of 5 for catching a few.

Highway Report:  Highway 522 is bare for most parts but there is still some snow covered sections throughout.  Travelling should be good for those planning on heading of to their places of choice.

Around Town.  Folks are taking things easy these days.  Did walk down the the Home Hardware to thank Steve for some advice he gave me a couple days ago.  Great fellow for sure.  Not only was his advice right on the money he saved me a good hunk of change. If your in need of some building supplies or just want to find out about a project, drop by and ask for Steve.    After that I headed on down to see Derrill and Mike at Clapperton’s Garage & Towing.  Both were there and as usual we had a good old chat for a bit.  Two nice folks to say the least. Here again if your in need of towing you can’t go wrong with Derrill and if your need some small equipment fixed up or your boat motor or snowmobile fixed ask for Mike.  So my friends, enjoy your day and stay safe an warm. Happenings In & Around Port Loring Ontario Canada

Good Morning:  So colder morning here in Port Loring.  Temperatures waking up were sitting at -19.9 C | -3.82 F.  But the sun is shinning which makes the mind and body accept things better.

Forecast For Today:  Rather unsettled clearing later as the day moves forward.  The cold will be with us for most the week and snow should be at a minimum.   OK by me.

Highway Report:  Highway 522 is covered with light snow with some icy sections through out.  Care should be taken if travelling.  But if care is taken no reason why you can’t get to where you want to go.

Ice Fishing Times:  This morning the old weather stick along with gathered data from Grandfathers chest of goodies, is saying that the best times to be out there will be from 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM.  Then once again from 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM.  I give it a 2 fish rating out of 5 for catching a few.  Good Luck!

Around Town:  Not much to report on this fine Sunday morning.  Just lit the wood furnace as  we didn’t have it going yesterday being so mild.  Nothing quite like wood heat to make the old bones feel comfortable. My old Dad used to say that wood heat not only warms the body but warms the heart.  He might have something there for some folks, others though I found it would take quite a bit of wood to do that job.  HA HA.  Looking out this morning with the sun shinning on the trees kind of makes getting out of bed all worth while.  Taking in the fresh northern air while feeding the birds seems to fill ones body with strength.  So what could be better?  Not much.  The day is there waiting.  It is totally up to you on how it pans out.  Tea time here.  You can reach George Walters if you so wish at [email protected]

Happenings In & Around Port Loring Ontario Canada

Good Morning:  Things has warmed up a touch more this morning.  Temperatures waking up were sitting at -0.7 C | 30.74 F.

Forecast For Today:  Freezing Drizzle Advisory in effect for:

North Bay – Powassan – Mattawa
West Nipissing – French River & Port Loring.

Highway Report:  Highway 522 is mostly snow covered after yesterdays weather along with some icy sections throughout.  Travelling today will remain poor all day with this freezing rain that is upon us now.

Ice Fishing Times;  Today the old weather stick is saying that the best times to be out there will be from11:30 AM – 3:30 PM. I give it a 4 fish rating out of 5 for catching a few.  In-spite of the rain it will be a great day for fishing.  Good Luck!

Around Town:  Well there are a few events and things happening.  If you click on the flyers I put up yesterday, they will show all that is taking place.  On another note my wife and took a drive into North Bay yesterday, going in roads were bare and dry.  On the way home it was another story.  In some areas I could hardly see the highway.  But with this Ford we have now weather isn’t really an issue, if one drives to conditions.  Great vehicle to say the least.  And why shouldn’t it be, made right here in Ontario Canada.  Stores in North Bay were swamped with folks out and about.  Kind of makes me wonder if anyone works on Fridays, other than the folks that work in the stores.  Waiting times in line ups were endless in some places of business. Reason behind this, is that folks are saving a bit with the gas prices being down. My old Dad said that if you put money into a working man’s pocket he will spend it.  If these gas prices stays down and goes even lower, store owners will thrive even more.  Will they stay down? Not likely, as even now they are thinking of adding some more carbon tax.  Crazy way of thinking but then again it is all about money in this world today, not about ones well being, like the working man or woman.  So I ranted enough here this morning, which I like doing now and then.  Tea time here and see what the day brings us.  You can reach me George Walters if you so wish at [email protected]

Forecast For Today:  Could see some snow later on this afternoon.  If things warm up a bit more the snow could turn to rain or sleet.  So if out and about care should be taken.

Highway Report: Highway 522 is bare for most parts but does have some hard packed areas.  But that should clear out with the temperatures we are having at the moment.  OK by me.

Ice Fishing Times: This morning the old weather stick is saying that the best times to be out there will be from 7:00 AM – 10:30 AM.  Then once again a bit later from 3:00 PM – 4:45 PM.  I give it a 5 fish rating out of 5 for catching a few.  Great day for pulling them in.  Good Luck!

Around Town:  Haven’t got much to report here this morning.  For myself I been busy once again working inside this old house.  Pretty well got everything done that needs doing, so in theory I am ready for spring.  But awhile to go yet.  I did manage to get out and clean the driveway yesterday and help my neighbour bring in some firewood.  So got my exercise for the day.  So my friends stay safe and warm.  You can reach me George Walters if you so wish at [email protected]
