Something Small to Begin the Day With

Good morning. You know, I’ve carried my share of regrets, such as moments I failed to appreciate and chances I let slip, but never once have I regretted the life I chose. That road was mine, crooked as it was, and I would walk it again.

So, it is a bit cloudy out there this morning, and we did get some much-needed rain through the night. That said, I’m hoping we’ll see at least a little bit of sunshine today.

Here is our weather for Port Loring, Ontario, Canada:

Today (Sept 26): Mostly cloudy, with a chance of a passing shower. High around 18 °C (64 °F).
Tonight: Cooler, with temperatures dropping to about 6 °C (43 °F).
Tomorrow (Sept 27): Breezy, with a mix of sun and cloud. High near 22 °C (71 °F), low around 10 °C (50 °F).

Highway 522 saw quite a bit of traffic yesterday, with lots of trucks and cars pulling boats, ATV s, and just about everything else. The reason is that many hunters and fishermen are taking advantage of our nice weather. Truth be told, this is about the best time of year to be in our neck of the woods. The leaves are turning color, there are no bugs, and the solitude people seek can only be found in areas like ours.

On another note, yesterday I managed to finish my new desktop. I put three coats of urethane on it and let it dry in the old woodworking shop overnight. I have to say, it sure looks nice—you could call it a one-of-a-kind desk. After that, I worked a bit in our gardens, cleaning out things that are done for the year. Once that was finished, my wife and I took advantage of some sunshine that decided to show itself on our front porch. All in all, in spite of not feeling up to par, it was a good day.

So what are you up to today GW?

Well, today, now that I’ve finally finished the desktop, I’ll be carrying it into its new home and setting things in order. But first, I have to deal with the few wires under the desk. My son told me to tag each one so I’ll know where they go. Makes sense—otherwise, I’ll end up pulling my hair out later. I’ve always said, learn from the past and move on, though in this case, I “learn the hard way first.”

After that, I’ll lend a hand to my wife. She’s been out there working harder than most men I’ve known, putting our flower gardens to bed for the winter. Timing is everything with those gardens. Miss the window and you’ll be paying for it twice over come spring. She never misses.

With that, I’m off to enjoy the breakfast my lovely wife has made. She’s worked hard all morning, and I get to reap the rewards. After that, I’ll see what the day has in store. Maybe, just maybe, I’ll stay one step ahead of those wires.

Until next time: Keep Your Minds Open & Your Stories Alive.

Good Morning, You’re Still Here, So Might as Well Read This.

Well, we are all waking up to some sunlight here in Cottage country, which is a welcome change from the dreary day that we had yesterday.

Port Loring Ontario’s Weather For:

Today (Friday, Aug 29):
Started off sunny at a crisp 49°F (10°C). Feels fresh enough to wake you up without coffee. As the day rolls on, the wind will pick up and the sunshine gives up to clouds. High of 63°F (17°C), low down to 44°F (6°C). It’s one of those days when you’re not sure if you should put on a heavy shirt or not.

Tonight:
Clouds settle in for the night, with no stars, no moon, just gray. Low holds at about 44°F (6°C). Best option? Stay inside and let the outdoors do what it’s doing without you.

Tomorrow (Saturday, Aug 30):
Clouds keep hanging around, which seems to be their thing lately. The sun might show off a bit, but don’t plan your day around it. High reaches 70°F (21°C), low around 49°F (9°C). A decent day, nothing to write home about, but not one to gripe about either.

Highway 522 has been a bit busier these past few days. Not that there’s a whole lot of places to go here in town, as we’ve only got three or four stores, maybe five if you count the LCBO. And truth be told, with the long weekend coming up, that little liquor store has been hopping.

It’s the one place that always draws a crowd. Folks stop in “just to pick up a couple of things,” but somehow those couple things turn into a bag or two. You can always tell when someone’s been there, as they walk out carrying that brown paper sack like it’s the weekend itself, all wrapped up and ready to go.

At any rate, in a small town like ours, the LCBO isn’t just another store, it’s part of the rhythm of things. Right alongside the two hardware stores, it keeps the wheels turning and defiantly the conversations flowing.

On another note, my wife and I finished stacking our winter’s firewood yesterday. It took two and a half days this year instead of the usual two, which is a sign, perhaps, that we’re getting just a touch older. Still, we enjoy the work, and there’s a deep satisfaction in seeing the last log finally in place.

There’s nothing quite like knowing we’ll be warm and cozy no matter what Mother Nature throws our way. Wood heat seeps in, warming more than just the body. There’s a quiet pride in it, too—each log a reminder of the effort we’ve put in and the comfort waiting when the cold truly settles in.

So, what are you up to today, GW?

Well, today, my wife and I are going to get the mowing out of the way for the week. The grass has eased off a bit lately, which works just fine for us. It won’t be long before it stops growing altogether for the year, and then we can turn our sights to other things.

But first, I’m off to enjoy the bacon and eggs my lovely wife is making, followed by our regular cup of tea. After that, we’ll head outside and wake up the mowers for another round.

Garage Sale Winding Down

Alright Folks, Here’s the Deal…

We’ve been at this garage sale now for going on two months. Sold a fair bit early on, but lately, not much has moved. Truth is, we’ve still got a lot of good stuff sitting out in the carport, and with colder weather coming on, we need that space back for the car.

So here’s what we’re doing…

Instead of hauling it all off somewhere where they’ll just turn around and charge folks an arm and a leg, we’d rather it go to someone in town who can really use it.

If you’re struggling right now and don’t have any extra money, please don’t worry — just come by and take what you need. No charge, no judgment. That’s what this is really about.

For others who can spare a little, we’ll have a donation box sitting out. Take what you like and toss in whatever you feel is fair, if you can. That part’s up to you.

We’re located at 11588 Highway 522, Port Loring, Ontario.

We’ll keep things out for a few more days, then we’ll wrap it up.

Thanks again to everyone who came by over the past while. It’s been good meeting folks and seeing things go to new homes. GW

A Piece of Port Loring: The Place We’ve Built and Loved

We’ve been living here in Port Loring for over twenty years now. Hard to believe how time slips by. You look around and see all the work that’s gone into this place, and it tells its own story.

The house is older, but solid. We’ve kept it in good shape, taking care of repairs and making it a home we’re proud of. Beside the house sits a small cottage we built ourselves. Inside, there’s a counter with a double sink and hot water, a small heater for cooler nights, a retro fridge, a microwave, and all the utensils you need. It has a double bed with a single bed above it, like a bunk bed. The cottage is beautiful inside and out, nicely decorated, and features a wrap-around deck shaded by huge maple trees and a few tall pines—a perfect spot to sit and relax. It even has high-speed internet through Starlink, which we purchased to stay connected. Hard to beat that out here.

Nearby, there’s a shower house I built myself. It’s not just for showers — it has a sink and a toilet, along with a stand-up shower. Everything’s nicely decorated, very clean, and done right, the way only an old craftsman can. It makes things comfortable for anyone staying over.

The property is 1.2 acres or more with 400 feet of frontage right on Highway 522. That makes getting around easy. You can walk to the local store, the restaurant, or head down to the lake to fish. We’ve always liked being close enough to town to feel connected, but far enough out to enjoy the quiet country life.

There’s a good-drilled well and a septic system done right by the professionals, so those worries are taken care of. Out back is a woodworking shop that was already here when we moved in. I fixed it up, insulated it, and installed a wood stove that keeps me warm all winter no matter how cold it gets. I’ve spent many afternoons there making birdhouses, benches, and the water wheel that turns steadily in our little fish pond. That pond has become one of my favourite spots. Watching the wheel go round and listening to the water is a good way to slow down and take a breath.

We’ve kept the grounds neat with flower beds full of perennials that come back every year and a vegetable garden that grows nearly anything we plant. There are several outbuildings for storing tools, toys, or whatever else you might have.

People driving by probably see a tidy property with neat lawns and flowers. What they don’t see is all the hours spent planting, building, fixing, and living here. They don’t see the quiet mornings with a cup of coffee on the porch or the peaceful nights when the crickets start up and the yard feels calm in a way only the country can bring.

This has been our home for a long time. We’ve put a lot of ourselves into it. Maybe one day someone else will take it over, make their own memories, and add another twenty years of stories. Until then, we’ll keep looking after it and enjoying it as we always have.

If this sounds like the kind of place you’ve been looking for, it’s currently for sale. You can get in touch with our realtor, Angie McCandless at Forest Hill Real Estate Inc. Brokerage. She’s ready to answer your questions and help you find out more.

Still Sharpening Pencils After All These Years on July 7/2025

Another View of our Property

Looking outside she’s a cloudy morning here waking up in cottage country.

☀️ Weather Summary & Takeaway

Today (July 7):
Expect low-hanging clouds through the morning, then some sunshine peeking through. It’ll stay comfortable, with a high around 73 °F and dropping to a crisp 52 °F tonight.

Tomorrow (July 8):
A pleasant day ahead—cleared-up skies mixing sun and clouds, high of 76 °F, cooling down to about 58 °F overnight.

Highway 522 has been—or at least was—fairly busy lately, but in saying that, it has definitely slowed down more than it normally does for this time of year. I suspect it’s because folks here in Canada are hurting. Between the rising cost of living and less left in their paychecks, people are feeling stretched. Add in gas prices that seem too high and interest rates on loans and mortgages that remain steep, and you’ve got a recipe for hesitation. Each trip costs more, every errand adds up, and many are thinking twice before hitting the road.

Now, that slowdown isn’t just out on the roads—it’s in the real estate market, too. Some are saying property values in our area have dropped 25 percent. But the truth is, that simply isn’t the case. Across Northern Ontario, where Port Loring sits, the average home price has dipped about 0.7 percent, which is modest at best. Meanwhile, in the northeastern regions—places like ours—the year-over-year decline has been around 6.2 percent, not the dramatic 25 percent some are claiming .

In cottage country more broadly, prices have seen varied movement. Some premium waterfront areas faced year-over-year drops—like Muskoka at roughly 10 percent—but others are climbing or holding steady.

In fact, many experts are forecasting slight rises of around 1 to 4 percent in 2025, depending on the region.

Locally, in communities like Port Loring—part of what’s called unorganized townships—we still have advantages: fewer restrictions, ample land, and that genuine country community feel. Buyers are still interested. They’re just more careful, waiting and watching before committing.

We’re selling our own place right now, and we’ve heard all the chatter: “You’ve lost a quarter of your value.” That’s fear talking, not facts. If you’re not pressed for time, don’t panic-pricing your property. Hold your price steady. You worked hard for what you built. A 6 percent dip isn’t your loss—that’s market cooling. And markets do what they always do: they bounce back when balance returns.

Yes, the highway’s a bit quieter and buyers are pausing—but that doesn’t mean demand’s gone. It’s here. Just slower and steadier. So stay firm, value what you’ve created, and don’t let exaggerated hype push you around.

Yesterday, my wife and I had one of those busy days you don’t forget, with a steady stream of folks dropping by our gift shop. I’ll say it again—this year is shaping up to be one for the books. We’ve sold more flutes than ever before, all handcrafted right here on our property. People seem to really connect with the sound and story behind each one.

But it’s not just the flutes flying off the shelves. Our books are proving just as popular—folks are grabbing them up like wildfire. And it’s no wonder why. Each book is packed with over fifty stories and tales about just about everything—things that have happened, things happening now, and even what’s just around the corner in life. It’s like holding a piece of our land, our memories, and our everyday adventures in your hands.

If you haven’t stopped by lately, maybe it’s time. Whether it’s a flute’s song or a story’s pull, there’s something here for everyone. We’d love to see you.

So what are you up to today GW?

Well, with the weather looking like it’s about to turn nicer, I’m planning to spend some time in our vegetable garden today—got a few more weeds sneaking in that need some attention. After that, I’m thinking some front porch sitting will be just the thing, soaking in the peace and beauty of our little slice of Port Loring. Honestly, it’s one of the nicest spots around.

Alongside that, my wife and I will be welcoming customers at our gift shop, so our day is shaping up to be a full one. If you’re out this way, drop by and say hello. Our shop’s right at 11588 Highway 522, Port Loring, Ontario. We’d be glad to see you—and if you’re interested, we’ll even give you a tour of our property. It’s a place with plenty of stories to share.

So with that I am off for my breakfast that my lovely wife has made for me and will then enjoy a cup of hot cocoa before heading outdoors.
