Port Loring Ontario Information

Good morning. Well not a bad looking day out there this morning.  Temperatures waking up are sitting at; 15.2 C | 59.36 F.  Have to say it is perfect weather for sleeping.   Also with that sun just a shinning it makes a feller want to get outside and do things.  Keeps ones mind heading towards the right perspective.

Forecast For Today;   Changeable, mending as the day opens up to what will be.

Bug Report;  Other than mosquitoes bugging a person not much happening.  Some say..”hey we live in the north, live with it, we hate folks talking about the bugs as nature has a need for them.”  I say… “true, but just the same there is a lot of things that are happening around us but I don’t have to like them.  As far as I am concerned it wouldn’t bother me none if them blood sucking parasites called Mosquitoes moved on to their just rewards.  And quickly.  My opinion only, of course.   Ha ha.

Fishing Times;   This Morning the old weather stick is saying that the best times to be out there will be from; 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM.  Then once later on from 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM.  I give it a 2 fish rating for catching them.  Good luck.

Around Town;   Not to much to report here this morning.  Things are quiet.  Lots of flowers though showing off these days.  I took a couple of our peonies.  You know truth be known these perennials may live longer than you do—some have been known to thrive for 100 years.  Amazing what Mother Nature has here on this earth to enrich us with beauty.  Click Pictures to Enlarge.

Happenings In & Around Port Loring

Good morning. Well finally some sun is upon us here in Port Loring.  Just a touch cool though, but should warm up in  a bit.  Tomorrow though we could be back to some more rain and into Tuesday.  Forecast taken from our own weather station here in Port Loring is saying that today it will be:  Changeable, mending as the day moves forward.  Temperatures waking up were sitting at: 11.7 C | 53.06 F, well below normal for this time of year.  Makes one think on just how long of a summer we will be having this year, as we are already nearing July with cool weather still upon us. Lets hope for a warm fall.

Fishing Times For Port Loring:   Well this morning the old weather stick is saying that the best times to be out there will be 8:00 AM – 10:30 AM.  Then once again from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM.  I give it a 2 fish rating for catching them.  Good luck!

Bug Report:   Blackflies are all but gone with mosquitoes making up for them.  Thinking they doubled in quantities since the blackflies left.  Hard to do anything in and around the bush and we have a lot of it in our area.  Only thing we can hope for is sunny warm weather with a breeze to keep them at bay.

Around Town:  This morning it is quiet with folks taking life easy.  Myself once it warms up a touch will do some shop work and work up the garden a touch, as with all the rain an cooler temperatures, the weeds are starting to grow a bit more than what is needed.  But I enjoy doing it along as it feeds nitrogen back into the soil.  Tomatoes as of yesterday have some blossoms showing up on a few plants, so thinking we will have some early tomatoes this year.  Business’s around town are doing OK or so they are saying.  Resorts are slowly filling up which is a good thing.  So my friends, enjoy the sunshine that will be with us today.  Soak up some rays, breath in some of our fresh northern air and have a great day.  Oh….and Happy Fathers Day to all those Fathers out there.  Don’t forget to go see yours or call them at the very least.  Makes their day knowing the family is thinking of them.  GW

Morning Folks.  Nice looking day out there.  The rain yesterday that was thinking of coming into our area didn’t arrive.  Maybe a bit today, as our forecast for today is saying it will be…. Showery early, improving though throughout the day.  So thinking not much rain is in our presence at this time.  Temperatures waking up are sitting at…12.4 C | 54.32 F and will warm up a few more degrees a bit later.

Bug Report:  Finding the mosquitoes are quite bad this morning to start things off. Few pesky deerflies also are around.  Also a few blackflies are still annoying folks, but for most parts they are gone for another year.

Fishing Times:   Well this morning looking at the old weather stick and putting things together it seems that the best times to be out there will be from.. 8:30 AM – 10:00 AM then again from 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM an one more time later on from 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM.  I give it a 2 fish rating out of 4 for catching them early in the day and a 3 out of 4 fish rating for catching them later on in the day.  So might pull in a few today.  Good luck!

Around Town:   See lots of tourists and cottage owners moving into the area these days.  Campers, Boats, 4 Wheelers you name it, all are making their appearance for another season.  Great to see them arriving each morning watching them go up and down the highway loaded with things to make their venture into the wilderness more fun and exciting.  For myself I can enjoy nature by sitting in an old chair, quietly taking in what she has to offer.  Guess that is a sign of one getting a touch older.  Not that old though.

Garden Report:   Things are growing quite rapidity these days.  Lettuce, spinach and pretty well all our herbs are being enjoyed each day now.  Tomatoes are starting to show off a bit, but could use a drink.  Was hoping for some rain but thinking now, that I might have to be their source of nourishment, water wise any ways.  Pumpkins an cucumbers are also doing well, along with the squash.  So great year for a garden.  Still not to late to get one started if your interested. Most places have plants already started and wouldn’t take much to get them to growing.  Might be a touch later for your tomatoes, and others with fruits, but still worth while planting.  Well guess that is it for this morning.  Heading out for my Dandelion tea, take in our surrounding scenes and breath in some of that fresh northern air.  Then see where the day brings us. Enjoy your day my friends, get some sunshine on that skin of yours.  No Doctors Needed.

Port Loring Ontario, Canada

Good morning.  Well not too bad of a day out there so far this morning.  Signs are pointing though towards some showers or a thunderstorm later on today.  Temperatures this morning waking up are sitting at…12.8 C | 55.04 F.  Will warm up in a bit.

Forecast:  Rain at frequent intervals.

Bug Report:  Blackflies are pretty much all gone.  Mosquitoes are around though pestering folks somewhat.  But not too bad so far in certain areas.  Did see a deer fly or two yesterday.  They also are an annoyance to those out in the bush, as they don’t leave you alone.  They will even follow you for a mile if they so choose.  Hard to get away from them once they have you in their sights.  Also got quite a bite on them too.  For me they are the worst, more so than the mosquitoes or the blackflies. But one has to put up with these creatures of nature if he or she chooses to live, in this neck of the woods.

Fishing Corner:  Looking at the old weather stick and putting together the formula that has been handed down in our family for many years, it is saying that the best time to be out there will be from 8:00 AM – 10:30 AM, then once again from1:00 PM – 3:00 PM.  I give it a 3 fish rating out of 4 for catching them, both times today.  Should be a great day for bringing them in.  Good Luck!

Information Around Town.  Business wise not to much tor report here this morning.  Most folks around here on Sunday take things easy.  Some goes to their place of worship, others just enjoy nature as their guide to happiness.  Seems fitting to me.  I finished up yesterday planting my gardens with vegetables of choice.  I like to put some things in early and then some later on so we have a constant supply of greens throughout the growing season.  We have already started eating from our herb garden, along with our romaine lettuce and kale.  Nothing more healthy than fresh veggies straight from the garden to your plate.  Put them along side a good long walk, soaking up some sunshine and a bit of deep breathing, bringing in our fresh northern air and you got one healthy body.  No Doctors Needed.  Enjoy your day my friends.

Happenings In And Around Port Loring Ontario Canada

Good morning.  Well somewhat cloudy this morning.  But things will improve.  Forecast for today is calling for it to be…Changeable, mending as the day progresses.  Temperatures this morning here in Port Loring are sitting at 12.7 C | 54.86 F. Will warm up to near 21 C / 69.8 F later on.  On the bug report, well same as yesterday but a touch worse.  Black flies are out in full force enjoying a meal or so on us humans and critters.  I was outside all day yesterday putting in my garden.  I didn’t get bit by any but they sure were annoying in ones eyes, nose, throat, ears, up ones pant legs and neck and around my old hat.  For me they are just a pest.  For some I know they feast on them.  One thing you could do if you do happen to get bit is to take a piece of plantain, grows everywhere in our area.  Make sure it is a touch clean and chew a piece.  Then put it on the bite.  You will find that this helps immensely with the itch.  Also will ward off those infections that some folks are inclined to get.   I also added its full affects to my upcoming health book along with hundreds of other items dealing with health and nature as a cure.  On another note for those wanting to do some fishing today the old weather stick is saying that the best time to be out there will be from….10:30 AM – 1:30 PM.  I give it a 3 fish rating out of 4 for catching them.  So not to bad of a day for fishing other than the Black Flies.  Mosquitoes aren’t out yet and hoping that the cold weather we had reduced their quantities some this year. But have to wait and see.  Nature has a way of looking after her own sometimes. Enjoy your day my friends.

Death of The Honey Bees

The answer is simple really.   With all the pesticides that folks are using, it’s a wonder we have any insects alive to go about their jobs in nature.  Not to forget what it is doing to us humans with sickness and changing our human structure as a whole.  I have had many folks coming to me saying I am wrong in essence, but in reality I tell them what part of poison do you not understand.  No poison what’s so ever is good for us humans, insects, animals or plants or environment.  There are better solutions out there but most choose not to use them.  They like the easier softer way.  But in saying that I do see a major change happening with our new generation.  They can not be fooled, as the older generation has been, they are well informed through the internet of today, along with having capabilities beyond imagination.  They stand up for what is right and not afraid to do so.  Good for them as it’s been a long time coming. They are the protectors of the new world.

GMO…What You Can Do To Stop It

Hi Everyone,

Environment Canada has recently given AquaBounty, an American company, permission to produce genetically-modified salmon eggs on a commercial scale. Now, there is only one step left before mutant fish hits our dinner plates — approval from Health Canada to allow GMO salmon for Canadian consumption.

If Health Canada approves GMO salmon, a new breed of farmed fish will soon be at your local grocer or seafood restaurant without you even recognizing it. Let’s tell Health Canada to reject mutant fish for human consumption in our country.

You can tell Health Canada that we don’t want GMO fish in our stores and restaurants here: http://action.sumofus.org/a/gmo-salmon-health-canada-rejection-franken-fish/?sub=mtl

Between allowing GMO salmon and the licensing of Norwegian fish farms on the BC coast, our government seems to be doing everything it can to destroy one of our great resources – wild salmon.

Please sign this petition to try to prevent the sale of GMO salmon in Canada.

In The News Again Today….Honey Bees

For a long time now I have been reading reports of our diminishing honey bees.  I have also written a few articles relating to the subject.  The reason we are loosing our Honey Bees can all be said in just one word.  Humans, we are the cause,  Why? Simple.  Pollution, as Power Wind Mills, Cell Towers, Pesticides by the tons on our food crops and soil, air pollution with our cars, trucks and mowers, Pharmaceutical drugs flushed down the toilets by the millions after going through our bodies, which are pretty well all unneeded by the way, my opinion only of course, just to many to name.  No need for me to go any further, as if you can’t see the problem you got blinders on.  Don’t need no scientist to figure it out.

News For Port Loring

Not to much to report around town, things real quite quiet actually. The weather hasn’t been the greatest lately neither, that doesn’t help ones getting out.  For myself I am slowly getting things done around the house here. Still got to till my garden and plant my garlic. Old back is playing games with me though with the wet cold damp weather.  But this to shall pass. I will say this though; the wood heat sure is pleasant for aches and pains as being so dry.  Not complaining mind ya, still can’t wait to get out of bed each morning.  Also ordered another four cords of firewood. I have around 16 cords of nice dry stuff piled high in the basement, but something is telling me we might just get a longer winter this year.  The more I study nature the more she is telling me that maybe a touch more snow and some colder weather is heading our way.  One item my old grandfather told me years ago is that if the cedars loose more leaves than usual it’s a good sign of lots of snow and ours here around the house have lost over half.  Reason being the leaves would hold the snow and break their branches. Less weight lest damage.  Makes sense to me and pretty smart on their part.  Time will tell.  Well have a great day my friends, turmeric tea time here and see what the day has to offer.

Port Loring’s Wild Rose

Was out down below on our property yesterday and just had to cut a few wild roses from my wifes rose garden.  Thought I would take a picture of them to show ya. Sure smell nice let me tell ya.  It is very hard now a days to find any flowers that smell, as most today have all been altered by us humans.  Nice to look at, but that is all they are good for.  Click Picture to enlarge.  Have a great day.

One Of My Vegetable Gardens

Took a picture of our vegetable garden a week ago, will take another, as it sure has grown since then.  Give you an idea of how us northerners grow our gardens.  Had it in this year two weeks before the 24th of May.  Amazing how our climates are changing, as in all my years of farming in Niagara, I would never even think of putting in my plants before May 24th. Click Picture to enlarge. Just one of many gardens I have around the old place.  Been eating salads now for over a month.  Enjoy your day.

Rhubarb Leaves Natural Fix

Did you know you know that rhubarb leaves will kill just about any bug.
Take the leaves off the stocks and put them in a pot with water, they should be cut up in pieces.  Fill the pot up to just about two inches from the top and then put the water to them.  Boil this for about half an hour, strain the leaves out of this and let it cool.  Put in a spray bottle adding Sunlight liquid soap, about quarter cup according to how much liquid you have, mix the two together and spray both sides of the leaves of the plants affected.  Hope this helps you out.  Great bit of info handed down from GIb, one of my readers.  Great way to fix a few bugs naturally, that is if you really need to. Most problems look after themselves if left alone.  Enjoy your day out in the garden.

News For Port Loring & District

Thought I would mention that it is quite dry out there so one should be careful if burning anything these days.   Should improve some, as my old weather station is predicting a few days of rain starting tomorrow.   Today though is another story.  Today will be nice and sunny, pretty much all day and if you got some gardening work to do, or wanting to build up your body a touch, then this is the day for you. No better day for your body to soak up some of that sunshine.  Myself I plan on working up my garden a touch so that I can plant some onions and a row of spinach.  Spinach likes it cold and in fact, if you so choose to do so, you can plant it in the fall and it will come up through the snow.  A pretty amazing veggie to say the least, an so good for you.  Enjoy your day my friends.

Natural Bug Spray Safe & Easily Made

With Spring closing in on us, I know there are a lot of folks just itchin to get outside in their gardens.  Myself included.  I like winter as nature does, a time of rest but I like the warmer weather better.  Last year I had a lot of folks ask me about a natural bug spray.  Here is a very good recipe that I am sure will help your plants stand up to them pesky pests along with a few that like the indoors also.  Take a look

You can make your own organic bug spray from kitchen leftovers! Simply save your onion skins, peels and ends then refrigerate in an empty margarine-sized tub or ziplock bag until the container is full. Once you have enough, place the onion pieces in a pail and fill with warm water. Soak for a few days, up to a week. You can keep this on the patio in the sun to steep but this is optional. After one week, strain the onion bits out and store the onion water in spray bottles.

Bury the onion bits around plants that are prone to aphids, spiders and other pests. Just spray both house and garden plants with the water to fight aphids and pests. You can also mix your garlic trimmings in with the onion pieces, bugs hate garlic too!

Pesticides Here In Canada & The USA

For years now I have written on subjects relating to my life growing up in a country setting.  The joys, hardships, all kinds of things, that, well-made a fellow feel good.   Any ways, here is what I would like you, the readers to take a look at, my feelings on things that is going wrong here in Canada, but not only here, in the USA too.  I would like to say a few words on what is happening here in our world today relating to our Honey Bees, Health, and the Food we eat.
First off growing up on a dairy farm, then moving on to a fruit farm I have seen and witnessed a lot of happenings relating to the use of pesticides in our country.  I won’t get into a major discussion here, but I would like to touch on a few items.
First off, the Honey Bees in my eyes are dying because of the systemic pesticides they are using.  A systemic pesticide moves inside a plant upward  and outward in other words from the roots to the flower on top, which in turn poisons pollen and nectar in the flowers, which in turn insects ingest and get covered with the pesticides while feeding on the plants,  and after a short time they then start to slowly die.  This is the reason we are seeing the bees disappearing from their hives.  They in reality aren’t disappearing, they are dying before they get back to their hives.  Simple as that and for the life of me I can not see why folks have not been able to pick up on this.  If I was to guess  I would say that we are being dictated to by the huge corporations that these chemicals are safe.  They are not safe at all.
Why are more folks getting cancer than ever before, along with a lot of other diseases.  Again it’s right there in front of you, it’s all the
Poisons that is in our food.  There is much more happening with the GMO seeds genetically-modified (GM) crops — and the pesticides and herbicides that accompany them, and once they have been unleashed I am afraid the outcome will cause great harm to us everything living on this planet.
Folks want that magic pill to cure everything of a sliver, to the worst of all diseases.  It isn’t going to happen, and the proof is out there, just a lot choose not to see what is right in front of them.  I have been trying to tell folks for years now of what is happening, speaking at different places, writing articles in papers, on television, radio and magazines.  Has it helped, well in some ways yes and in some no.
Today folks minds are easily swayed into believing in all kinds of
things, and unfortunately most isn’t is good for us.
Just the other day I went for a drive up Highway 522 heading west to Highway 69 and what do I see?  All along the side of the road plants all dead.  Spraying took place killing everything in site.  Now I see in the paper they are planning to spray selective herbicides around Nipissing &District to control the undergrowth.  Selective herbicides kill specific plants leaving others unharmed.   Sounds impressive but it is not.
First off in my eyes there is no reason on earth that this should be done.  Don’t they realize that eventually this herbicide will get into our lakes, streams and eventually into our drinking water.  Not to forget about all the critters and insects that eat these plants that they are going to kill or make darn sick, including ourselves.
To do what they are doing doesn’t make sense to say the least and if we don’t soon stand up for what is right, we will all pay dearly in the coming years.  It is happening now and in the future it will get worse, if we don’t do something, now.
Cancer will expand and if let go we will all perish.  I know some would
say I am a skeptic.  I am not though, I am just an old farmer and columnist that grew up, through the best of times and the worst of times and have seen it all, to date anyways.
Well I have had my say, I wish I could do more, but it seems I am limited, but I will keep on talking to folks and doing what I can, hoping maybe, just maybe a few of you will take up the stand too.
One last thing.  Here is one of many visions that came to me one night while sleeping.

“The Important Things In Life,  Are  Unfortunately Never Seen By Most.”

Our Monarch Butterflies & GMO Food

For years folks have enjoyed the fluttering wings of the Monarch butterfly gracefully spreading its joy around the world, at no cost to us; pollinating crops with out ever complaining, not even once.  Now though they are on the decline slowly dying  a pain full death.  The Monarchs love milk weed plants as it needs them to reproduce and is the only plant that their young can feed on. Today though the pesticides in GM modified plants are spreading to the milkweed plants and killing them, in turn the Monarchs are slowly dying and if left to continue they will soon all be gone.  What a shame, a small lovely critter that dedicates its life to helping us now being destroyed by the big money hungry companies of the world today.  My opinion only.

Hungary destroys all GMO maize fields

Some 400 hectares of maize found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds have been destroyed throughout Hungary deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar said. The GMO maize has been ploughed under, said Lajos Bognar, but pollen has not spread from the maize, he added. Unlike several EU members, GMO seeds are banned in Hungary.

Another country that has seen the light.  Hope more will come on board in the near future.
