What’s Happening On May 22/2022

It’s a cloudy morning here in Port Loring, Ontario. We will also be having some showers off and on this morning. If we are lucky, we might see some sunshine tomorrow. But cooler temperatures will be upon us for most of next week. Along with some more rain off and on. So it’s going to be kind of a mixed bag of weather for a few days. Highway 522 is getting busy. I got up through the night and cars with boats along with campers were going up and down the highway at 2:00 AM. It’s a sign of what’s to come.

On another note, the Blackflies are still annoying, but not as bad as other years. And … yes, the Mosquitoes have started to make themselves noticed. All this damp, warm weather gets them to moving around.

Yesterday I worked away in my old woodworking shop for a bit. Fixed up my old rototiller a bit more and worked in my vegetable garden getting it ready to plant. I will probably do that the middle of the week, as that is when the nighttime temperatures are looking pretty good. I like it to stay around the 50 F mark at nights before I plant. The old saying when I was farming many years ago. Don’t plant till after the 24th of May. I can still hear my old Dad saying that.

With that bit of info under your hat, that is if you wear a hat, I am off for coffee and piece of toast this morning. I don’t feel all that hungry. Have a great day and stay safe. There is still a lot of sickness in our area these days. GW

Don’t Kill The Dandelions, They Save Life’s.

Starting things off, it is cloudy here in Port Loring, Ontario. We should however see some sunshine as the day progresses, and then rain for tomorrow. But Monday isn’t looking all that bad. So weather wise, things are shaping up for a not too bad Long Weekend. We did have a nice rain through the night, with lots of thunder and lightning. Things could have been a lot worse as they said we could have had a tornado along with large hail. So all in all, we made out pretty good. Highway 522 is getting busier every day. Yesterday I had to go pick up a belt at Mikes here in town. I decided to go for a walk and I had to wait for all the cars, campers and trucks, so I could get across the highway. Sign of how things are changing these days.

On another note, I did get my parts for my fifty-year-old rototiller, so going to see if I can put it back together this morning. It is a good old machine, but hard to get parts for nowadays. I can’t complain, mind ya, as I haven’t had to do hardly any maintenance on it for as long as I have owned it. Something like my old Roper Riding Mower. Ha Ha. I have to say, it turns heads when folks see me mowing with it.

On another note, I got my potatoes planted yesterday, which should give us a few nice meals later on this summer. My garlic is also growing leaps and bounds too. The best I have ever grown, thanks to my friend Archie. Sometimes a feller has to take some advice from others. I also got my vegetable garden in shape for planting. I will get at that in three or four days. Just waiting to make sure there isn’t going to be any more frost at nights.

So with that I am off for a bagel with some Dandelion Jam my lovely wife made for me yesterday and will then see what the day has in store other than what I have planned. You never know. Stay safe, still lots of folks sick here in town.

What’s Happening On May 20/2022

Good Morning. It’s a sunny morning here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. However, we could see a thunderstorm later on today. The reason being it will become quite hot as the day moves forward, which will bring in rain. The long weekend other than Monday isn’t looking all that good weather wise, with more rain in the forecast. In my eyes, we here in Canada should have stayed the same as the USA with the Holiday being next weekend. That way, it would be a bit later when the weather is nicer. And the tourists in the USA would be off work the same time we are. But that is what our government is all about … messing up things.

Highway 522 is still quiet these days, with a lot of folks staying home with the gas prices being so high, along with our economy getting worse every day. We spend billions giving it to other countries when we should be looking after our own here at home. You know … let’s take the USA & Canada if they would take the billions that they are sending over to other countries and put it into, let’s say … finding a cure for cancer … cancer would be a thing of the past within a few years. I don’t for the life of me see what their thinking is. Like the wars and things. It isn’t the people themselves that want war, it is simply a certain number of so-called power hungry, big shots trying to force their beliefs on others. What a shame that is. Makes me sick thinking about it. I can see, in a few years, the people themselves eventually rebelling and getting rid of all governments as they stand today. Might not be in my time as I am getting up there in years, but it is coming, mark my words. People have had enough and when they themselves can’t take any more something is going to happen.

Anyway, that’s my rant for the day. I am going for a cup of coffee. Heck of a way to start the day. Stay safe.

Oh, the blackflies are still with us, but the mosquitoes haven’t made an appearance as yet. Another Parasite we could do without. GW

What’s Happening On May 18/2022

Good Morning! It’s a sunny morning here, waking up in Port Loring, Ontario. However, even though it is sunny, it is down right cold. We have our furnace running at the moment. We also had a frost overnight, with the temperature getting down to 0.9 C | 33.62 F. It will warm up though as the day progresses, which will make it nice for doing some outside work. I am happy we didn’t plant our vegetable gardens yet. Highway 522 isn’t all that busy these days, but it will pick up on the weekend. Although it is calling for showers for Saturday and Sunday, which might make folks stay at home along with the gas prices being so high. We will see how it goes.

On another note, my wife and I cleaned out our chimney yesterday after burning a winters worth of wood. Wasn’t all that bad, but it is still a good thing to do. Now it is ready to go for this winter. Not that I even want to think about it yet. After that, I worked on finishing up my new spot I made for some pumpkins.

Today I have to take my car down to Kerry Booth’s Service Centre as it has a wheel bearing making a noise on the back, so he is going to replace that for us. Problem is finding out which one it is. Hard to tell if the noise is coming from the right rear or the left rear. But I am sure he will figure it out. He is a good mechanic.

And yes, the blackflies are still with us. But the mosquitoes haven’t arrived yet. Won’t be long, though.

With that I am off for a boiled egg and a piece of toast that my lovely wife is making for me and will then get to work. Stay safe. GW

What’s Happening On May 17/2022

It’s a cloudy morning here in Port Loring, Ontario. The temperature outside has also dropped a lot, with it sitting at 9.3 C | 48.74 F getting out of the sack. It will warm up a bit more than it is now, but it will still be a cool day, reason being the wind is coming in from the North West. Highway 522 has slowed down a wee bit, but it is early in the week. As we near the weekend, things will pick up once again.

On another note, I did manage to get our vegetable garden rototilled. Took a bit of doing using the little one I have. But digging it by hand first, then going over it five or six times did the trick. Once I have the new parts that are on order, I will try and fix my big one. Which now I won’t really need till Fall. LOL, I only need them for a half a day in the spring and a half a day in the Fall. Ha ha. The grass is also growing leaps and bounds, so tomorrow if the sun shines we will get that out of the way. I like to do it on Thursdays but … we are in for some more showers Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We also have to get our tomato plants and things planted, but it’s still early, so we will have to see how that goes. Lots to do in the spring, that’s for sure.

On another note, my lovely wife and I went to town yesterday to pick up some clothes and things. It usually takes the whole day. Being Monday, the stores weren’t all that busy, which made it nice to look around. Wearing our mask, of course. A lot more now have stopped wearing them in stores, but seeing that … there are a lot more people getting sick too. They say. Oh! It’s no worse than a cold. LOL Well truth be told, my wife and I don’t want to catch a cold neither. Or the flue or what ever. The masks reduce the chance of catching them, too.

Anyway, to each their own. With that, I am off for a bowl of cereal and will then finish up making my new pumpkin patch I started a couple of days ago. It’s nice to be able to get outside instead of being stuck in the house. Take care. GW
