One Mean Looking chick!

It’s a cloudy morning here in Port Loring, Ontario. But we should see some sunshine as the day moves forward. However, tomorrow things temperature wise cools down a lot, with some rain thrown in for good measure. But in saying that we do need rain as everything is really dry. We did have a wee bit last night, but nothing that did any real good. Highway 522 is quiet this morning, but that is because it is Sunday. Day of rest. At least for some. For me, it is like any other day. I get that from being a farmer, as on a farm there is always something that needs to be done. Not that I don’t enjoy our front porch off and on.

Yesterday I worked away sanding and painting one of our decks by the house. Today I will work away on a mower I have. I got fed up with it and bought a new carb for it. If that don’t work, I am going to throw it in the dump. I bought it brand new, and it has been nothing but problems, let me tell you. First it wouldn’t run, then the wheels wore out, in one year, then the axle and bearings that hold the wheels are now almost shot. I make-shift fixed things as they happened, but that’s it now. Ha Ha. They sure don’t make things like they used to, as most things are made in China or ? There they use the cheapest material they can to make things.

So with that I am off for a boiled egg and a piece of toast that my lovely wife is making for me, and will then see what the day has in store, other than what I want to do. You never know. Take care and stay safe as there are still a lot of people getting sick from this virus. GW

I have to tell ya, we sure have been having some nice weather for the past week or so. Other than the BlackFlies, that is. But it is to be expected living where we do. And they ease off around the middle of June. They are pretty bad out there at the moment. I worked in my gardens yesterday and the air was thick. But they didn’t bother me, biting wise. I chock it up to being so old, I am not as tasty as I used to be. They would much sooner enjoy the juicy city folks. Ha Ha

Highway 522 is getting busier every day, which is normal for this time of year. The temperatures have sure been warm the past couple days, which should kill some of these blackflies.

On another note, our grass is sure growing leaps and bounds these days. We will have to mow it next week for sure. We still have to plant our vegetable gardens, but I am holding off till after the full moon on the 16th of this month. After that, I will see how things are looking. It would be nice to get things planted, that’s for sure. Doesn’t pay to rush things when it comes to Mother Nature. Last year I planted them early, and we had a bad freeze, and we lost a lot. And the thing is being an old farmer I know better. Ha Ha.

With that I am off for a boiled egg and a piece of toast and will then get to work. I am getting our two front decks ready to paint. They get looking not so good after winter. Take care and have a great day. Make it a great day. GW

Once again it is a fantastic day here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. Other than the Black Flies as they are out in full force. Although, when i was working in my gardens, they weren’t biting that much. Annoying is more of what is taking place at the moment. The mosquitoes aren’t out as yet, but with this warm weather, I am sure they are lurking in the wings so to speak. Highway 522 is busy and will get busier with folks taking their vacations. And a lot just like to get away for the weekend. The price of gas though, is slowing a lot of folks from going too far from home. We are paying a heck of a price, that’s for sure. It’s all about price gouging. Making that Almighty dollar. Not what is good for the country. And on top of all that, this carbon tax which is the biggest joke of the century is sure hurting folks a lot.

On another note, I worked steadily on different things around my shop yesterday, along with turning over more of my vegetable gardens. I need my large Rototiller, but the parts aren’t in yet, so I can fix it. Always something to hinder ones mind. Our tulips are sure putting on a show these days in front of our home. They sure are nice to take in while enjoying our coffee on the front porch. Along with the trees that are all coming out in leaf. Even our Wild Leeks are looking good this year. My lovely wife is going to make us a Wild Leek Soup either today or tomorrow. It is one of the healthiest things a person can eat in the spring and very good for those with allergies.

So with that I am off for a bowl of porridge and … maybe I will uncover my boat today. Will see how that works out. You never know. Plan one thing and then do another. Ha Ha. Take care and have a great day.

Starting things off, we are having some more sunshine waking up. It is a beautiful day, for sure. Other than the Black Flies as they are out in full force, let me tell ya. I went outside to take a picture of some tulips that are putting on a show this morning, and they were swarming around my head. I do have to finish digging my vegetable garden today, as I only managed to get it 3/4 turned over the day before yesterday. I like to take my pointed mouth shovel and dig down deep, turning the soil over, before rototilling it up. I still haven’t got the parts yet to fix my large tiller. I do have a small one, but it’s not the greatest. But it’s better than nothing. Highway 522 is very busy these past few days with folks coming in from all over. And there are lots of new folks moving into our area too, buying up anything and everything. People wanting to get out of the big cities. Can’t say I blame them, and I don’t have a problem with that as long as they don’t start changing things into what the cities are all about. Seems some like to move from the city and then make the country like the city. Not sure what they are thinking, to be honest with you.

On another note, my wife and I took the day yesterday and went to North Bay for some groceries and things. We also picked up a few plants for our vegetable gardens. Lambs on Lakeshore Road had a good assortment. It started off a bit rainy, but by the time we got to the Bay, the sun was shinning down upon us. It was also a good day people wise as not too many were in the stores. A lot are home sick these days with the virus. My wife and I wore our masks where ever we went, kept our distance and washed our hands with disinfected when going in and coming out of the stores. We also ordered our food from a drive through and ate in our car. Actually we prefer to do it that way as we aren’t sitting in amongst a lot of people listening to every word you say LOL. But … to each their own, I always say.

I also noticed our grass is sure growing these past couple days. I suspect we will be mowing next week for sure. I also finished up our roadside stand, which I will take a picture of later on today and show you all how it turned out. I had a few people Emailing me asking to see it, LOL. With that, I am off for a bowl of oatmeal and a piece of sour dough bread toasted that my lovely wife is making for me. It’s the healthiest of all breads for those that might be interested. Take care and stay safe. There are still a lot of people here in town sick with this virus. GW

What’s Happening On May 10/2022

It’s a bit cloudy this morning here in Port Loring, Ontario. The sun is trying hard to break through though, which should give us another really nice day weather wise. There is also a nice breeze coming in from the 207 deg/SSW. Which would make it a good day for fishing. Myself, I don’t put my boat in the water till the middle of June, as that is when Black Fly season is about over and the Mosquitoes have died down some. It kind of depends on the year we are having, as some years they are worse than others.

Speaking of Black Flies, I saw quite a few yesterday while I was outside working. They weren’t biting too much yet, but that will change in a day or so. Joys of living so far back in the bush.

Yesterday I finished up the road-side trailer I built and will drag it out to its spot in front of our house later on today. Should be an eye-catcher for sure. It took a lot of work building it … but it looks good. I also tried to get my rototiller going yesterday, which was no problem. But running is the only thing it did, as the main drive belt was shot, along with a broken pulley. So … went to see Mike here in town that owns a boat repair shop, he ordered me some parts. It’s nice to have a feller that will do these things for you. We have known him for years. Nice fellow for sure.

Today I am going to be working on some more equipment and as I said earlier put the new trailer out front. Then will see about doing some work in our gardens. After that, maybe hook up the water to our cottage, so it is ready to go. Lots to do this time of year.

With that, I am off for a piece of toast and will then see what the day has in store, other than what I have planned. You never know really. Some days I head in one direction only to be directed to another direction. Interesting in one way, in another I still have to get done what I started to do. LOL Anyway, you all have a great day. GW
