Good Morning Port Loring Ontario

Nice looking morning waking up. Sun was shinning and birds were chirping . It is a touch cool though with temperatures at time of post sitting at 2.8 C | 37.04 F It should warm up and be a nice day all way round. Tomorrow is going to be warmer, and we should see some sunshine throughout the day. We might even get some front porch sitting in if things goes right. They were calling for some not so good weather over the weekend, but looks not too bad now. One just never knows when it comes to Nature. Highway 522 is bare and dry this morning so there is no reason not to make that trip to North Bay for groceries and things. On another note the grass is growing leaps and bounds. I am thinking that next week we will have to mow it for the first time. My vegetable garden is still quite wet so it will take a few days of sunshine to dry it out, so I can till it. With that I am off to have a cup of coffee with my lovely wife and will see what the day has in store. GW

Won’t be long and fresh veggies will be on the table.

Garlic at its Best

Here is a couple pictures of the garlic I planted last year. We had enough to last us all winter, along with sharing some with friends. There is nothing like fresh garlic to give you the energy you need to put out a good days work. It also is a great asset for those suffering from allergies of spring. 1 clove a day is all that is needed. Cooked or eaten raw, either way is beneficial. GW

Fresh out of the garden!
I of four bundles ready to hang for winter.

White Christmas Cactus

Well this Christmas Past we had our old Cactus produce some flowers. Just in time for Christmas too. So I thought I would share a picture or two with you. If you are a high tech person, another name for it is Schlumbergera. Myself I prefer Cactus, as I have always always said, if you can’t pronounce a word, don’t use it. GW

Christmas Cactus,

Veggie Garden

Well been an unusually hot summer so far, with temperatures reaching into the high 90s F.   In 14 years I haven’t seen it this hot.  Gardens though are growing leaps an bounds with fresh veggies on the table every day.  Actually it is the best garden I have had since moving here.  I took a picture  which shows how it is coming along.  A garden this size will feed a family of six or more all summer long.

Tarragon: A Herb of Kindness

Tarragon helps your body make red blood cells, which are, in turn, responsible for moving oxygen around in your body. Which I found helps in the prevention of cancer and many other diseases. The way it works is, lets take cancer; tarragon is a sweet tasting plant with a distinctive flavor of licorice. When cancer cells find the sweetness of tarragon it gobbles it up so to speak. In doing so the oxygen is taken into the cancer cells, and they are disintegrated,  Leaving the healthy cells to do what they are suppose to do, and gain strength. You don’t need a whole lot, a 1/4 teaspoon mixed in with a few pieces tomatoes is all that is needed. Once a day.  Or you can simply snip off a leaf or two from you garden, as it is easy to grow, and eat it.  Can’t get much better, or easier than that.

Tomatoes

With tomato season almost upon us you are about to enjoy a treat.  Some say they can’t eat tomatoes which in some cases is true.  I found though that tomatoes are delicious, either raw or cooked.  Actually cooked tomatoes have benefits that most don’t know about.

It’s all about the lycopene – the antioxidant that causes the red color of tomatoes – a powerful antioxidant known for preventing the formation of certain cancers like prostate cancer and breast cancer. They also lower your risk of heart disease and are naturally anti-inflammatory. The secret to getting the full benefits of tomatoes lies in the preparation. Lycopene is released when tomatoes are cooked. In fact, preserved tomatoes if organic have even higher concentrations of lycopene than fresh.  Myself I can’t wait, .  What better way to stay healthy than to walk out into the garden an pick a nice red tomato, set back with a touch of salt and take in what nature has to offer.

Build Your Immune System

T cells, also known as T lymphocytes, are a white blood cell of grave importance to your immune system; they allow your body to adapt a response to any pathogen. There are also foods you can eat to trigger production of these critical cells.

3 Ways to Boost NK Cells

Here are a few easy ways to boost our naturally occurring killer cells so that we can fight one of the biggest diseases of all time:

3. Take More Vitamin C – This vitamin is not only good for fighting colds and flu, but it boosts the activation of both T-cells and NK cells so that your immune system has extra armor to protect you against a host of diseases, including cancer. The Journal of Immunology confirms that ridiculously high doses aren’t required. Just 1000 mg a day can help boost the immune system.

4. Get Your Daily E – In addition to boosting the production of killer cells, vitamin E also supports the making of B cells – also utilized by our immune systems to produce antibodies and kill bacteria. You can get the recommended 60 mg a day from nuts, grains, seeds and vegetable oils. Further, vitamin E intake lowers the risk of heart disease.

5. Eat Your Beta Carotene – As the name suggests, this important vitamin found in carrots can help boost killer cells as well as helper T-cells so that your immune system can fight a number of diseases. Foods full of beta carotene include sweet potatoes, kale, turnip greens, spinach, dried herbs, and mustard greens, just to name a few.

Preventing cancer may be as simple as eating whole, natural foods. Who knew?

Foods to Improve Your Immunity

Carrots
The vitamin A in carrots helps trigger white blood cell production; a 1-cup serving of chopped carrots has 21,384 IU of this vitamin, many times the daily recommended intake. You also take in a small amount of vitamin C in a serving of carrots — 7.6 mg — as well as small amounts of zinc and selenium, all of which contribute to T cell counts.
oysters
Packed with selenium, this tasty shellfish helps boost your body’s production of cytokines, a protein that’s known to ward off illnesses.

Yogurt
berries-and-yogurt
Yogurt that contains live cultures is rich in lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium lactis (read: good bacteria), which fight bacteria that cause diseases and raise your white blood cell count.

Green Tea
Green tea is a great source of L-theanine, an amino acid that triggers the release of germ-fighting compounds from your T-cells. (Green tea also helps to boost your metabolism.)

Oranges
One of the best sources of immunity-boosting vitamin C, oranges cause your body to produce higher levels of antibodies and white blood cells.

Crab
Like oysters, crab meat is rich in selenium, a nutrient that strengthens your immune system.

Garlic
Including garlic in your meal plan to increase your T cells is a good option. A study published in the February 2009 issue of the journal “Planta Medica” indicates that compounds in garlic trigger the growth of lymphocytes. Garlic also contains a small amount of zinc — 0.1 mg — and 2.8 mg of vitamin C, another vitamin useful for your immune system. The vitamin C in garlic pumps up your body’s production of white blood cells; adults need 75 to 90 mg of vitamin C per day.

Carrots
Carrots are crammed with beta carotene, a phytonutrient that increases your body’s production of T-cells and natural killer cells.

Spinach
The high amount of antioxidants found in spinach help boost your immune system.

Sweet Potatoes
Like carrots, sweet potatoes are loaded with beta carotene, which boosts your body’s T-cell and NK-cell count.

Mushrooms
morels Rich in compounds called beta glucans, mushrooms boost the production of NK-cells and T-cells in your body to help prevent infections.

Salmon
Salmon contains omega-3 fatty acids, which cause your body’s phagocytes to fight bacteria more effectively.

Kiwi
Like oranges, kiwis are high in vitamin C, which helps protect your body against infections.

Bell Peppers
Bell peppers are packed with vitamin C, which prompts your body to produce more interferon. This antibody covers the surface of cells and fends off viruses.

Broccoli
Broccoli is a great source of glucosinolates, phytonutrients rich in sulfur that stimulate the natural antioxidant systems in your body.

Brazil Nuts Or Almonds
Eating more brazil nuts, a large South American nut, may improve your T cell count, thanks to the selenium content. A 1-oz. serving of these nuts provides you with 543.5 mcg of this mineral, and research indicates that selenium positively influences T cell proliferation and activity, according to a study featured in the June 2010 “Journal of Nutrition.” Adults require 55 mcg of selenium each day. Brazil nuts also supply small amounts of zinc and vitamin C.

Vitamin and Mineral Rich Food
Folic acid, vitamin B 6, riboflavin and thiamin are particularly important to the proper functioning of t-cells and their quantity. The list doesn’t stop there. Foods rich in vitamins and minerals are essential to keeping t-cell count up, and that means eating a lot of fruits and vegetables. Raw fruits and vegetables are the best way to get a maximum amount of these nutrients. Dark leafy green vegetables, cauliflower, broccoli, squash, tomatoes, strawberries and carrots are all nutrient rich produce that may increase t-cells.

Papaya
Papaya, especially the Carica Papaya, has recently been found to increase regulatory t-cells, but it has been used to treat many diseases and cancers for centuries. The fruit, its seeds and even its leaves are found to be beneficial. Try eating some ripe fruit, dried fruit or even drinking some papaya leaf tea. The stronger the tea, the more effective it is said to be.

My Friend Frank’s Chicken Coup

This is my old buddy Frank’s new chicken coup he made a year ago.  Easy to make if you have the knowledge and tools.  Thinking I might just make one.  Movable too, which is nice, as the chickens then can enjoy fresh veggies at any given time.  Makes for some great tasting eggs.  Not like you buy from those that say they are selling organic.  Truth be known, over half the organic eggs aren’t really organic. Forecast For Today.  Changeable, mending this afternoon.  Temperatures will rise to near 23 C/71 F.  Good looking day shaping up and will  be nice for tomorrow.

Bug Report:  Blackflies are on their last legs for this season.  Few still bothering folks in certain areas. Mosquitoes are the worst of it all right now. Horse flies and deer flies now entering into the picture too.  They can make a person irritable also.

Highway Report:  Highway 522 is bare and dry with a few deer, moose and turtles venturing out upon it. Care should be taken if out and about.  Seen a few of each yesterday heading into Sundridge.  Other than that travelling will be good.

Fishing Report:  This morning the old weather stick is saying the best times to be out there with pole in hand will be from 6:00 AM – 9:00 AM.  Then once again from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM.  I give it a 2 fish rating out of 5 for catching a few.  Winds this morning are very calm coming in from the South South East.  Good Luck!

Around Town. Nothing much to speak of this morning.  Gardens need a bit of hoeing these days.  Tomatoes should be hilled  up with a touch of fertilizer to help them a bit.  With that tea time here orange pekoe with a touch of fresh dandelion is on the menu for this fine Wednesday morning.  Have a great day, make it a good day.  You can reach George Walters if you so wish at [email protected]

Forecast For Today:  Becoming fine..  Temperatures will remain pleasant, not to hot not to cold for most of next week.

Bug Report:  Mosquitoes are annoying folks a lot these days along with the blackflies.  One can’t be standing around for any length of time.  Hard to get away from the mosquitoes as they follow a person into the dwellings.  Blackflies like to reside outside if at all possible.  Couple more weeks and the worst should be over.

Fishing Times:  Today the old weather stick is saying that the best times to be out there will be from 6:00 AM – 9:00 AM.  Then again from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM.  I give it a 2 fish rating for catching a few this morning and a 3 fish rating for catching a few this afternoon.  Winds this morning are once again calm coming in from the North North East.  The air is cool this morning, but the sun is nice.

Around Town:  Not  much to report here this morning.  Folks are sleeping in a bit as hardly a car moving up or down the highway.  That will change with more tourists moving into the area every day.  Gardens are looking good these days with plants growing leaps and bounds.  I suspect I should be eating lettuce in the next couple days. Garlic also is putting on a great show.  Up to a height of around15 inches.  Going to be a great crop this year.  Nothing more healthier than a piece of raw garlic every other day.  Don’t need to much as it has a lasting effect.  With that, tea time here.  Thinking an orange pekoe will taste good this morning.  Enjoy your weekend and stay safe.
