White Oak Hmm

You know a couple years ago I got some white oak figuring it would be a good burning wood. I also have been burning wood for heat a good portion of my life and had in my mind that I pretty well knew all there was to know about types of wood, what is good for burning and what is not.  Well I put about four cords in the basement come the end of August and felt good about it, only to find out that it didn’t burn worth a darn.  Ended up the only way I could get it to burn properly was to split it about four times,  then let it dry for another month.  I thought it was pretty dry as it sat out covered for two year, but I was wrong.  But, hey I learned something and that is to stay with my ash, yellow birch, white birch, red oak and hard maple. I got to say ash and hard maple are on the top of my list for good heating,  through them cold winter days when temperatures dip to around -20 below.  The other problem I had with the white oak,  was messing up my chimney pretty good. After four weeks of burning,  it plugged it in places.  Glad I cleaned it out and will clean it out once more just before Christmas, as I should be done with it by then.  Usually with the hardwoods I only clean my chimney twice a burning season.  Oh well not a big deal.  So if you heed my advice you could save your self a few headaches.  Talk Soon.

Snow And More Snow

Well decided yesterday not to clean the driveway though we did have around ten inches or so. Reason being it was suppose to have some freezing rain through the night, so thought ahead, that way the rain will fall on the snow and will be able to clean it all up the next day. Worked slick as if I would have cleaned it yesterday it would have been bare and with the ice it would be slippery. Pays to think ahead once and awhile and keep an eye on what the weather is going to be. I never go anywhere unless I make sure the weather is going to be ok and that saves for a lot of grief. I know though some folks have to drive no matter what the weather but knowing what the weather is going to be can help them also. I am lucky here in Port Loring not snow wise as if any one is going to get snow its here in Port Loring. As we get dumped on with any storm that comes across Lake Huron. But as I said in other posts, it doesn’t bother us one bit as we are ready for anything, well pretty well anything.  I also heard that we broke a few records on this fine day with more snow than before.  You know we should bring them scientists up here to the north and maybe they wouldn’t be so gong ho on that Global Warming.  The old earth will do what it wants with out any help from us.  Food for thought.   Only thing we ask is for nice weather over Christmas so folks are kept safe. Raw Milk

Now there is an interesting topic, Raw Milk.  I could talk about that all day. You know for years where I was raised on the dairy farm I drank over ten glasses of raw milk a day. I got to tell you there is nothing as tasty as cold raw milk and not only that,  it’s soooooo good for you.  Here in Canada though its been outlawed,  just another law that was brought down the tubes to protect folks,  or so that is what they would like you to believe.  Another thing is that milk of today or should say store bought milk, well I can’t drink one glass, if I do I almost bend over in pain or headin to the bathroom.  Not sure why they call it that,  years ago we called it the out-house,  that was to direct to the point I suspect.  Amazing huh my stomach loves raw milk and won’t tolerate pasteurized milk.  So if one sits down and thinks about that a bit,  it doesn’t take a scientist to tell me that I shouldn’t be drinking store bought milk.  I also think if folks went by their feelings when eating or drinking things,  that they would be a lot better off. Hard to do though in today’s world as there isn’t to much out there to eat any more that’s  pesticide free or not loaded with chemicals.  Well as I said at first,  I could go on here for ever,  but you all know what I am getting at.  Watch what you eat, read labels, ask questions and the best fix would be for us all grow and raise your own.  The more self efficient you become, the better off you will be and in doing so,  you will become so much healthier.  Talk Soon.

Note Of Appreciation From Rona (Ghostly Tale/Oliver Creek)

Wow!  George you can tell a story all right.  I read and enjoy all your stories but this one caught my attention.  I have a feeling you have more of this type of tale to tell.  Don’t hold back.

Snowy And Cool

Well  called for a bad storm last night and it looked as if it was heading our way but so far only got about six inches or so.  Could get more as one just don’t really know living here in Port Loring.  We get a lot of storms that come off Lake Huron .  Got the old shop stove going and once the snow ends will get at the driveway cleaning.  Yep winter is here.  Talk Soon.
