A Few Words From Snowy Port Loring Ontario

Well with Christmas coming on fast  I got to wondering how many of you folks had all your shopping done.  You know years ago, where I was raised we didn’t have presents.  For most parts it was a day of getting together with neighbours and friends.   Usually our day started off with Reg and myself getting the cows milked and chores all done up while Laura the lady of the house, was busy cooking and baking things for later on in the day when guests arrived.  Yes things has changed that’s for sure, even in our home, as my wife and I have been steadily trying to figure out what to buy for our boys and daughter in-law and new grandson.   Trouble is our sons are pretty high tech, make good money and what ever they really want they buy themselves.  But there is other things they can’t buy and asf today I can honestly say we are done for this Christmas, at least for the gifts.  My wife still has lots to do, preparing for our family and guests, she just doesn’t stop.  But she enjoys doing it, so who am I to say any different.  On another note up here in the north where we live, there is one thing that we can always depend on, and that is a White Christmas, as I can’t remember when we ever had a green Christmas.   This morning looking out the trees are laden down with heavy snow and with the smoke hanging in the air from the wood furnaces and fireplaces in our area, what could be nicer,  Just something about it all makes me feel content. Just by looking out brings back so many memories of years gone by, which is what no one can buy at a department store.

Is There A Santa Claus????

As A Writer here is My Favourite.

Dear Editor,
I am eight years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says “If you see it in the Sun it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia O’Hanlon.
115 W.95th St

Answer:

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank GOD! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Merry Christmas Linux; GO OPEN SOURCE!!!

Tech’s Poem for those Linux folks like me and my son Karl.

Twas the night before Christmas
And all round the house
the only things stirring
Were me and my mouse.

I was working with windows
It was making me fractious,
And I knew that quite soon
I would have to take actions.

It slowed and it stuttered
And finally froze
Then showed a blue screen at the end of my nose,
My anger was rising and thoughts turned quite bad,
“PC through the window, was one that I had”

But my genetics and lineage ensured my calm;
And decided, the computer should come to no harm.
The O/S is to blame, and will never improve
I was conned by Bill Gates and this upgraded move.

Then I had an idea as I sat in my muse,
I have other options like Mandrake or Suse;
Or Debian, Red Hat, or Fedora Core,
PClinux, Ubuntu and so many more..

So I set to downloading a distro named Suse;
And burned a CD for this data to use,
It all went so smoothly,”I waited for hitches”,
As my mind was attuned to the Microsoft glitches!

I entered the disc in my CD Rom drive
And sat back, and watched my PC come alive,
As it smoothly installed the O/S Suse 10
I know I will never use windows again.

So to all you users of Microsoft software,
With its viruses, Trojans, and various Malware,
Blue screens, and freezes, and drivers to find,
Registry problems that muddle the mind
Take a leaf out of my book, “give Linux a try”,
Its all free of charge, with no programs to buy,
With so many versions of this excellent kernel
The choices you have are almost eternal

So download a distro that won’t cost a penny,
The flavours of linux are varied and many
You’ll find one to suit, I’m sure of this;
And using your PC, will once more be bliss.

Merry Christmas Linux Click Picture To Enlarge.

Bill C-428. Is One Bill That Should Never Happen

Now here is something us older folks should be taking a look at.  For myself I think it shouldn’t be made law as I believe our old age pension has to be earned not just given away.  Just crazy thinking in my eyes.  My opinion only.

Dear Ms. Consul:

I am pleased to respond to your electronic message, which was forwarded to me by the Office of the Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, regarding private member’s Bill C-428.

As you know, Bill C-428 proposes to amend the Old Age Security Act to reduce the residence requirement for entitlement to a monthly pension
from ten years to three years. This private member’s bill was introduced in the House of Commons by M..P. Ruby Dhalla, a Liberal Opposition
Member.

As the Minister responsible, I have been very clear that when this Bill
comes forward we will strongly oppose it.

The Old Age Security (OAS) pension is paid to seniors in recognition of the contribution that they have made to Canadian society, the economy,
and their community. The OAS program is non-contributory and is based solely on age and residence in Canada after the age of 18. The ten-year
residence rule is consistent with many other countries that have residence or contribution requirements associated with their national
pensions to ensure that benefits are given in proportion to years of residence or affiliation with their pension programs. With this in mind,
it is felt that the current ten-year residence requirement represents a balance between a reasonable contribution to Canadian society and the
right to receive a lifelong pension.

It is estimated that reducing the ten-year eligibility requirement to three years would cost over $700 million annually in additional OAS and
Guaranteed Income Supplement benefits. Given that the OAS program is funded entirely from general tax revenues, this would be costly and place
an additional burden on the Canadian taxpayer..
Yours sincerely,
The Hon. Diane Finley, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development

Winter storm warning for North Bay – Powassan – Mattawa, Port Loring Ontario

..Significant snow and blowing snow tonight and Sunday..

This is a warning that dangerous winter weather conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements.

A low pressure system centred over Eastern Iowa is tracking east towards the lower Great Lakes and will intensify into a winter storm as it reaches Southern Ontario by Sunday night.

An expanding area of snow will reach Sault Ste Marie and Manitoulin areas by this evening then rapidly spread northeast into remaining regions tonight. As the low pressure system deepens, the snow is expected to become heavy at times Sunday and continue Sunday night into Monday as the low pressure centre moves north into Québec. A general snowfall of 20 to 30 cm is quite possible by Monday morning across most of the district.

In addition, strong and gusty northeasterly winds are expected to develop and these will whip up the freshly fallen snow resulting in blowing snow in exposed areas.

Travelling conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly tonight. Hazardous driving conditions from low to at times nil visibility in heavy snow and blowing snow are quite possible. Motorists should adjust travel plans accordingly.
