George Walters is a Canadian columnist and author with more than forty years of writing experience. For over twenty years he has written a weekly column for Postmedia Network — Canada's largest newspaper chain — never missing a single week, publishing fifty-two stories a year. Combined with his work in Reader's Digest Community Voices, World News, Country Living, The Country Register, and farm and rural lifestyle magazines across Canada, he has published well over two thousand stories drawn from everyday life. He writes about farm work, fishing, old trucks, and the kind of people you only find in small towns — but just as likely he'll hand a voice to a weathered telephone pole, or turn his eye on something happening in the world today and tell you exactly what he thinks about it. No subject is off limits. If there's a story in it, George will find it. He has been called a philosopher of everyday life, a description that came up more than once during his television appearances over the years — and it's not hard to see why. His writing has a way of making the ordinary feel worth sitting with. He is the author of eleven books, including yearly short story collections and the Clay Moretti Files mystery series. Clay is a fifty-year-old private investigator who drives a 1967 Ford Galaxie, smokes cigars, and operates by a code the modern world gave up on a long time ago. The cases are present day. The man handling them is not. All titles are available in paperback and eBook on Amazon. Together, George and his wife Ruth have also created Elmer Finds His Way, the first in what he hopes will be a long series of children's books. Ruth did all the illustrations, as she has for every one of George's books — and beyond that she designed and painted the covers as well. Her work is woven into every page of everything he has published. A few words from readers: "I pulled up a kitchen chair and read your story three times." "You have a way of making a person homesick for a place they haven't been to." "Thank you for writing things that make old people and kids feel the same way at the same time." All my titles are available in paperback and eBook on Amazon.ca here.

Something to think about

Someone Made My Father Sick by Jeff Jarvis

My 95-year-old, fully vaccinated, deaf, dear father is in the hospital with breakthrough COVID. Someone in Florida gave it to him. That someone — someone who works in a community serving the elderly and vulnerable — should have been vaccinated but was not. I am enraged at that someone, whoever it is.
My father has been isolated since the earliest days of the pandemic. He was obsessively careful. He did not go out at all. I ordered everything he needed with Instacart and Amazon, which is also how we knew he was fixing his breakfast and lunch. For most of the shutdown, dinner was delivered to his apartment. Then, a few weeks ago, the senior complex where he lives reopened its dining room. I was not terribly worried as I knew that 97 percent of the residents were vaccinated. What I did not know was that only 50% of staff was vaccinated.
My sister and I had become concerned about our father; versus a week before, he suddenly didn’t seem right. So we came to Florida on Tuesday. We found him exhausted in bed. He said he had no energy. He was short of breath. We called the EMTs, who found his pulse irregular and his oxygen low. Even so, we didn’t jump to assume COVID; worse, we feared some sudden decline with age. The EMTs took him to the hospital, and we followed. After a short time, the ER doctor came and told us we had to leave immediately.
My father is almost entirely deaf now. He had only one hearing aid in, and it was not working. Shouting accomplished only so much. So I asked for some paper and used a marker to write in large, blue letters: “YOU HAVE COVID.” He said: “How the hell?”
Someone gave COVID to him, someone who could and should have been vaccinated.
That was the last we have seen our father. He is now in the hospital’s COVID ward. We can’t visit him. Because he is deaf, we cannot talk to him; the phone is impossible (we got him a landline phone that transcribes conversation into text, but that is at home). I think now of all those scenes of people before the vaccine who were dying alone and isolated, and my heart breaks again for them, and now for him.
It is hard to get updates about our father. The nurses are busy; they have to dress and undress in protective clothing each time they enter and leave a COVID room … which seems almost absurd as I write this in a state that is a COVID ward, where its nihilistic leader dismisses — no, fights against — masks, vaccinations, science, and sense. My Pa is on oxygen and the drugs they have — steroids, Remdesivir, anticoagulants — but they still have next too none to treat COVID. He is doing well, they tell me. They say he is smiling. I’m mostly concerned about his atrial fibrillation. (I know it is not a fatal condition, as I got afib after 9/11 — but that means I also know just how much it can drain one’s energy.) I can’t get my father’s cardiologist to give me the courtesy of answering my call to discuss his condition. I am dependent on the advice of the experts I follow online; I am grateful for their generosity and advice. But I don’t know enough about what is happening right now in my father’s hospital room. Since his oxygen is stabilizing, he will probably be sent soon to whatever COVID rehab bed they can locate, then back to his continuing care facility, then home.
My sister and I are leaving Florida today because there is nothing we can do here and, frankly, because we are at risk in this place. One or both of us will return when he is back home and we can see him and hug him and help him. Since he cannot hear his caregivers in the hospital, I have been delivering letters to him, printed out in 36-point type to tell him what is happening to him, to tell him we are watching from afar, to tell him we love him, though that he knows. Somehow, I will figure out how to get these notes to him until we can see him.
Yesterday, we spoke with someone at his complex about his future care. We expressed utter dismay that half the staff there could be unvaccinated. How could anyone be so irresponsible when they are caring for old people? The people we were speaking with agreed. But they said that if they required the vaccine, in a tight labor market they’d end up short-staffed.
Excuses. Everybody is making excuses when they should be showing responsibility and leadership. We should be requiring vaccinations for the good of all. We should be shunning the people who refuse vaccinations. This is now their pandemic, the pandemic of the unvaccinated. They are ignorant, selfish, irresponsible, cynical, dangerous, deadly.
They gave our dear father COVID. Damn them.

Morning Chat July 30/2021

Good Morning! So how you all doing? Good I hope. Ruth and I are fine, very busy but healthy. Other than my lovely wife having a sore leg. We have chalked it up to all the work she has been doing for the past three months or so. Lots of bending and lifting. It seems these days that our minds say, heck ya, go for it. Then our bodies say. Ain’t happening!! LOL, At any rate, we do know we have to ease off some, that’s for sure. On another note, we did have a whopper of a thunderstorm last night with lots of lightning. It rained so hard, our eve-troughs on the house couldn’t take it away fast enough. The good news was that it didn’t last all that long, and I got my rain barrels filled back up with some nice soft water; which we use for our vegetables and plants. Highway 522 and others are very busy these days with campers and travellers coming into our area from all over. Good in part, I suppose. Yesterday, my lovely wife and I went to town to pick up a few things. Shoes were on the top of the list, as my work shoes were so worn out I was gluing my soles down with silicone. Worked for a while. I also picked up a new Husqvarna Walk Behind Lawn Mower for my wife, as the other one we had was front-wheel drive. With it being front-wheel drive, the weight is on the front, and you almost had to lift it to get it to move going up hills. Which, in turn, was very hard on her. For flat surface’s they are fine. I will probably sell it for half price, $200.00 as it is only two years old and looks and runs good. I will see how that goes. Today is mowing day, so I will give the new one we bought a work-out. After that, I will do some painting on the posts that we have for our deck on our cottage. We didn’t like the colour we painted them a few days ago. With that, take care and stay safe. This virus is still with us and getting stronger in a lot of instances. Especially amongst the folks that isn’t vaccinated or doesn’t want to be vaccinated. I feel for them … as it will eventually get them, and the results won’t be nice, that’s for sure. GW

Good Morning! It’s a great looking day here in Port Loring Ontario, Canada. The sun is shinning without a cloud in the sky. The temperature climbing out of bed was sitting at 12.7 C | 54.86 F. It will warm up a bit as the day moves forward. But in saying that, we will be seeing some really nice cooler temperatures for the next week or so after today. Which will make it real nice for doing some outside work. Not that the hot weather has stopped my wife and I lately. We take each day as it is given to us, making the best of things. A day wasted is a day without fun. And you know … life should be about having fun, not all this Bureaucratic Bull S…. that is among us at the moment. I get tired of it all. At any rate, such is that. Highway 522 is still busy these days. I am not sure what is happening with the borders. I am hoping that they keep it closed for another month at the very least. Not only that, I also think we should keep the folks from coming into our country from other countries for a while longer too. At least till we see how things work out with these vaccines. This virus hasn’t left us, it is still there as strong as it ever was. The good part is that a lot of people have gotten their vaccines, and it is working, and working good. In spite of all the nonsense that is going on at Facebook and other social media platforms. I am real happy I don’t belong to one of them groups. As far as I am concerned, all they do is corrupt a person mind. And they do it without anyone realizing it. LOL. That’s my opinion on the subject. On another note, my lovely wife and I have been really busy re-landscaping the front of our home. I think we should be able to get it finished up today. It is looking pretty nice. After that, I have a back deck on our house that needs repairs, so if I work up enough energy I will get into that. With that I am off for some homemade pancakes my wife is making for me with an egg on top covered with Maple Syrup from my friend Mike Clapperton here in town. He won the world championship for the best Maple Syrup a year ago or so. I have to admit, it sure is tasty. Take care and stay safe, and enjoy your day. It’s all up to you.

Morning Chat July 27/2021

Good Morning. It’s a cloudy morning with some rain thrown in for good measure here in Port Loring, Ontario. The temperature has also cooled down some, which is quite nice. Highway 522 is still very busy these days with folks coming into our area from all over. So that tells me folks are enjoying the summer, which is understandable after all we humans have been through with this virus and things. Even Mother Nature is giving us some problems this year with all the forest fires and droughts. I feel sorry for the farmers out west, as they are sure are having it hard these days. I suspect if the weather doesn’t improve, the price of food will rise even higher than it is now. On another note, my lovely wife and I have been really busy working outside on our cottage, with the new deck. For the past few days, we have been landscaping it using plants that we already have. Some of them Hosta’s we have weight 100 pounds. I had to use a cart to move them, and even then it was a challenge. I did break a few apart where we didn’t need a large one. After we had them all planted around the cottage, we then decided to thin out the large gardens in front of our home. We are about half done at the moment, as we have tons of plants to move into other areas around our property. The problem was that everything was so overgrown, along with the gardens being so large. Knowing that, we decided to cut them down in size, which will make them easier to look after. We aren’t getting any younger. Although, my wife says she can’t believe all the work we have been doing these days. Today, with the rain, we will take it a bit easy. I might go out and clean up my woodworking shop, as it once again is a mess with all we have been doing. Doesn’t’t look like a woodworking shop at the moment. LOL, More like a garden centre. LOL Anyway, what can you do? With that I am off for a couple poached eggs on toast and will then see what the day has in store. You never know. Take care and stay safe.

Morning Chat July 22/21

Good Morning! It is looking like another great day for us here in Port Loring. The sun is trying to get through the haze, which it will do as the morning moves forward. The temperature has been nice also for the past couple days, with it sitting this morning at 12.7 C | 54.86 F. Can’t beat that, at this time of year. Also, the mosquitoes, horse flies and deer flies aren’t all that bad at the moment, which makes it real nice for doing some outside work and fishing. I haven’t been out fishing this year, actually I haven’t been out for two years with this virus among us. I miss going out with my fishing buddy Berry. But I am thinking now my wife and I have had both of our shots as has Berry we might get out there in the coming weeks. I will see how it goes. I still have to get my boat cleaned up and see if it runs. I will get to that in a few days, now that we have finished up building our wrap around deck on our cottage. At the moment, I am in the process of painting the outside of it. I did manage to get 2/3s of it done yesterday. Today though is mowing day, so that will take me most of the day, as my lovely wife’s back isn’t the greatest yet, and I don’t want her to make things worse by mowing. So I will see what I can do on my own. On the mowing end of things, I did buy a new cordless weed eater last week as my old gas one was giving me a lot of problems. It is fixed now thanks to Mike at the garage here in town. Actually, I have to pick it up this morning. I will do that in a bit. I am hoping this new battery one will work out good, as I am getting tired of these gas engines. I have to admit, they have come a long way these days. I will let you know how it works after I give it a work-out today. Highway 522 is very, very busy these days. Non-stop cars, trucks, and campers moving East and West all day long. But it is the middle of summer and folks have been coped up a long time. You could say the call of the wild has gotten to them. LOL. With that, I guess I will have my breakfast and then get to work. It’s a pleasure working outside in this nice weather. Take care and stay safe. GW
