George Walters is a Canadian columnist and author with more than forty years of writing experience. For over twenty years he has written a weekly column for Postmedia Network — Canada's largest newspaper chain — never missing a single week, publishing fifty-two stories a year. Combined with his work in Reader's Digest Community Voices, World News, Country Living, The Country Register, and farm and rural lifestyle magazines across Canada, he has published well over two thousand stories drawn from everyday life. He writes about farm work, fishing, old trucks, and the kind of people you only find in small towns — but just as likely he'll hand a voice to a weathered telephone pole, or turn his eye on something happening in the world today and tell you exactly what he thinks about it. No subject is off limits. If there's a story in it, George will find it. He has been called a philosopher of everyday life, a description that came up more than once during his television appearances over the years — and it's not hard to see why. His writing has a way of making the ordinary feel worth sitting with. He is the author of eleven books, including yearly short story collections and the Clay Moretti Files mystery series. Clay is a fifty-year-old private investigator who drives a 1967 Ford Galaxie, smokes cigars, and operates by a code the modern world gave up on a long time ago. The cases are present day. The man handling them is not. All titles are available in paperback and eBook on Amazon. Together, George and his wife Ruth have also created Elmer Finds His Way, the first in what he hopes will be a long series of children's books. Ruth did all the illustrations, as she has for every one of George's books — and beyond that she designed and painted the covers as well. Her work is woven into every page of everything he has published. A few words from readers: "I pulled up a kitchen chair and read your story three times." "You have a way of making a person homesick for a place they haven't been to." "Thank you for writing things that make old people and kids feel the same way at the same time." All my titles are available in paperback and eBook on Amazon.ca here.

Certain Times Of Year Certain Things Has To Be Done

Well back to some more rain here the past two days.  Also had some freezing stuff thrown in with it.  Nothing to make a fellow or gal worry though.  One thing at least we aren’t shovelling yet.

On another note this is the time of year to get down on your knees.  No………not to do any praying, as that never helped anyone that I know of in my day.  But……….. this is the time to get that garlic planted so you can be eating healthy come next June.  I put in around five, twenty foot rows this year, as my wife told me we needed more than I planted last year.   Thing is, one doesn’t need  much space when it comes to planting garlic.  I keep my rows around six  to ten inches apart and plant each clove another six to ten inches apart, which for around thirty years has worked well for me.   I like to put them under ground around an inch or so, which also I found is a good depth.  To finish them off I spread a few leaves over the top of them, straw or what ever is ok also.  I then mark my rows so I don’t get to tilling them up in the spring, and, well that’s about it.  I got to tell you, my wife and I sure love fresh home grown garlic.  Once you taste home grown garlic you will never go back to store bought stuff.  Should mention one more thing, the garlic that comes from China in 75% of the stores today, I won’t plant.  Reason being, it just doesn’t grow as nice.  The kind I like, has a bluish ting to it and usually sells by the pound.  So that’s that.  Now I hope you all get outside and put a few in the ground.  You will be glad you did I can guarantee that.  Oh and when down on your knees planting, take up a good handful of soil and let the fragrance of it entice you, as it is a long while till spring. Talk Soon.

Helpful Ways Of Preventing The Flu Or Colds

Lots of folks talk about preventing the flu with shots and things but no one talks what you can do if you decide not to get the shot.  Here is a few things that will work, you just have to put them into motion.  And Hey!  it’s not the end of the world, so get your minds onto positive thinking and enjoy life.  Take A Look.

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. “Hands-off-the-face” approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat or bathe). This one should be repeated as it is  very important.  My young ones are now over 20 some years of age and you will never see them touching their face with their hands.  Make it a habit.

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don’t trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don’t underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*
Myself I just warm up a cup of water, put in a teaspoon of salt and a pinch of baking soda.  Then just hold my nose in the cup holding one side shut and sniff up just enough so as I feel it in the back of my throat. Simple as that.

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

Great Day To Get Outside

Well it’s sure a beauty of a day here in Port Loring. Sun is shinning and no reason as far as I can see why anyone shouldn’t be outside getting some well needed sunshine.  The more you can get now, the least sickness will strike through them cold winter months.. Not so say though that you shouldn’t be out in the sunshine all you can in the winter too.  I feel if you got outside and rolled up your sleeves for a half an hour a day, you would see diseases drop by 30%.  Colds Flu’s would almost be extinct, and the way you feel about life would change greatly towards the good.  And so easy to do too.   Oh!  should say don’t be covering your skin with that all them lotions either, as if you do you  might as well stay in the house.  Your skin will toughen up to withstand anything the sun can throw at it given time.  Have a great day.
