What’s Happening November 8/2021

Good Morning!. It’s a sunny day here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. The temperature has been quite nice for the past couple days too. This morning, it was sitting at 7.3 C | 45.14 F. It will warm up even more as the day progresses. I suspect some front porch sittin’ will be in order later on. Highway 522 is still busy with lots of hunters. Yesterday, my lovely wife and I went for a drive just to browse around our area. Bottom line what some says they are seeing what’s new, in truth it is just being nosy. LOL LOL But if browsing goes down better … than whom am I to say. LOL We both had a good morning out. We brought a coffee with us and took in all the new things that has taken place around us, along with Nature. It is sure a pretty time of year, that is, if you know what to look for. We also noticed a lot of people are still at their cottages, as the boat ramps are full of cars and trailers. I suspect people are just tired of staying home and are enjoying themselves. I can’t say I blame them one bit. Today I will work away in our home, we have a fellow that is coming in to do some work on our water, adding a few things to make it just that much better. Not that our water is bad, it’s just that it is a touch high on iron which bugs me from time to time, so today we will fix that. With that I am off for my morning bowl of cereal and will then let the day unfold around me as it so chooses to do. You never know. Take care and stay safe. The number of people getting this virus is rising here in Ontario every day. GW

What’s Happening Nov. 7/2021

Good Morning! Well, the last few days here in Port Loring, Ontario has been quite mild for this time of year. This morning, getting out of bed, the temperature was sitting at 6.8 C | 44.24 F. And it will warm up substantially as the day moves forward. Actually it will remain above seasonal temperatures for the next five days. After that, things will start to get back to normal with cooler temperatures moving into our area. But for this week, it looks like front porch sittin’ time. Can’t beat that. Who would want to take a chance going to Florida when the temperatures here are almost as nice. Now, don’t take me wrong, as I have enjoyed heading to the sunny south for a good number of years. But with this virus still strong among us, I don’t feel it’s worth taking a chance. As Florida is still having a lot of infections daily. Actually our numbers are rising too here in Ontario among our young ones at school and the ones that aren’t vaccinated. Not much we can do, other than wait it out. Until those that doesn’t have the vaccine catches it, the numbers will keep rising. Kind of shame that, so many have to suffer, but it is their choice. Highway 522 is still busy these days with hunters moving into our area for the second week of deer season. After that, things will slow down immensely. Which is fine with me, as my lovely wife and I are ready for a well-earned rest. Although, I do have lots to do in my old woodworking shop. My wife also has orders lined up to do, which will keep her busy. Yesterday I worked away here in the house on another podcast and today will do the same. Maybe after lunch, if the sun stays with us, we will head on outside and soak up some of that sunshine that we all are in need of these days. With that you all take care. GW

Buy Canadian

Interesting Article: Not sure how much is true, but I do know that most of all our things comes from, other countries, when they could be made right here in Canada. For my wife and I we look at the labels to see where things have been made and if all possible we buy Made In Canada. Every time you buy Canadian, you’re helping our own.

Shopping in Lowe’s the other day for some reason and just for the fun of it I was looking at the garden hose attachments. They were all made in China … The next day I was in Home Hardware and just for the fun of it I checked the hose attachments there. They were made in Canada ! Start looking…
In our current economic situation, every little thing we buy or do affect’s someone else – even their job.

A quote from a consumer: “My grandson likes Hershey’s candy. I noticed, though, that it is marked made in Mexico now, instead of Smiths Falls , Ontario.
I do not buy it any more”.

My favourite toothpaste, Colgate, is made in Mexico now. I have switched to Crest. You have to read the labels on everything.

This past weekend, I was at Walmart. I needed 60W light Bulbs. I was in the light bulb aisle, and right next to the GE brand I normally buy was an off-brand labelled, “Everyday Value”. I picked up both types of bulbs and compared the stats – they were the same except for the price. The GE bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand, but the thing that surprised me the most was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO and the Everyday Value brand was made in – (get ready for this) – Canada at a company in Ontario.

Their Equate Products are also made in Canada, and are very good.

Just to add my own experience on buying Made in Canada , I was looking for canned mushrooms that were made in Canada and could never find any, so I would buy fresh. But recently I found Ravine Mushrooms – made in Canada with a little red maple leaf on the can. A little more money but when I opened the can I looked at Mushrooms that look like real mushrooms, not a mushroom that looks like it was cleaned in bleach.

Another product I no longer buy is Del Monte or Dole canned fruit.
Del Monte is packaged in Taiwan and Dole is now a product of China .
Why should we pay for their fruit when our growers are left with fruit rotting on the Trees. E.D. Smith is still made in Canada…
Buy theirs, at least you will know what is in it and have some quality control.

By the way, all pickles with the President’s Choice label and the No Name yellow label [Superstore] are made in India .. Think about it, Water from the Ganges is used… Yes THAT Ganges, Pollution of the Ganges, the largest river in India, poses significant threats to human health and the larger environment.

So throw out the myth that you cannot find Products you use every day that are made right here. My challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for everyday things and see what you can find that is made In Canada.
The job you save may be your own or your neighbour’s’! (Your children & Grandchildren, also.)

If you accept this challenge, pass it on to others in your address book So we can all start buying Canadian, one light bulb at a time!
Stop buying from overseas companies!
(We should have awakened two decades ago.)

Let’s get with the program. Help our fellow Canadians keep their jobs and create more jobs here in Canada.

If President Biden insists on a ‘Made in America ‘ Policy, which is commendable of him, to support American workers, we should do likewise.

BUY CANADIAN! Read the labels. Support Canadian Jobs.

What’s happening? Nov. 3/2021

Good Morning! I hope everyone is well on this fine-looking Wednesday morning. At least it is looking nice here in Port Loring, Ontario, weather wise. It is a touch cool this morning, with the temperature sitting at -2.6 C | 27.32 F. It will warm up a bit as the day moves forward. We did have a skif of snow overnight, but we should see a lot of sunshine throughout the day. The good news is, that after today things will start to warm back up again. Heck, we might even get some front porch sittin’ in. Can’t beat that for this time of year, let me tell ya. Yesterday I worked inside for most of the day on a story or two. This morning, I lit the wood furnace in the house and my woodworking shop for the first time this winter. Feels mighty nice, too. It’s amazing the difference in heat between oil or gas or wood. Wood is the best of them all. They say wood is bad for our environment, but I don’t believe that for one minute. Contrary to what many may think, burning wood for heat does not add to your individual carbon footprint, as wood gives off the same amount of carbon whether it is burned up or decays naturally. Wood burning does not release any more carbon dioxide than the eventual biodegradation of the wood if it was not burned. The oil, gas and electric companies won’t tell you that though as they are out to make money. Highway 522 is slowing down these days other than a few trucks moving up and down the highway. Which is from all the building that is going on in our area these days. With that I am off for my morning bowl of oatmeal and will then see what the day has in store. Take care and stay safe. GW

What’s happening? November 2/2021

Good Morning! So how you all doing this morning? Good I hope. Ruth and I are so, so with a few issues, mostly caused by getting a touch older. But we are dealing with them on a daily basis. My theory is, figure out the problem, then figure out the cause, then do something about it, naturally if possible. And then go from there. On another note it has been cool for the past couple mornings with the temperature this morning sitting at … -0.8 C | 30.56 F. It will warm up a bit as the day progresses. We could see a shower or some light snow off and on today. Highway 522 is busy but not too busy as most of the hunters are back in the bush. It will pick up a wee bit near the end of the week when they all get tired of being out in the cold. LOL Yesterday I didn’t do too much other than a few things around the house. I did rake a few leaves and dug out the remainder of my kale that I had left to grow in our vegetable garden. It was about done for this year. Today I will work away on another Podcast and a story I have in mind for the Newspapers I write for. Which will keep my mind occupied for most of the day. With that I am off for my morning bowl of oatmeal and will then see what develops. Other than what I have planned. Have a great day, take care and stay safe. GW

What’s happening? Oct. 30/2021

Good Morning! It’s a cloudy morning here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. It isn’t that cold this morning, with the temperature getting out of bed sitting at 5.7 C | 42.26 F. It will warm up a touch more as the day progresses. No one can complain about the weather for the past few days, that’s for sure. My lovely wife and I have sat outside enjoying our afternoon coffee now for the past few days. We might be able to do it again today, as we should see some sunshine later on in the day. Let’s hope things work out. Highway 522 is still very busy, as is the LCBO. It’s the busiest store in town, LOL. On another note, things are starting to dry out around our home, as it sure has been wet. My vegetable garden is more like a lake than a garden these past few weeks, LOL. But things dry up fast in this country, with the soil being rocky and sandy. The grass is still growing, but it also is slowing down a bit. I won’t be cutting it anymore this year. The leaves on the trees are all but gone. There are a few holdouts, like the Silver Birch and the Silver Maples, along with the Oak trees. They seem to hold onto their leaves till the last minute. I guess they hate to see the summer end. Can’t say I blame them. Yesterday I worked on a new podcast along with some stories for my columns I write for in the newspapers. This morning I will do the same and then this afternoon when the sun comes around to our front porch we will be sitting outside taking in some much-needed Vitamin D3. I would think living in this part of Ontario that almost everyone is very low in vitamin D. Without it, we open the door to all kinds of virus’s and things. So it would pay to take a good supplement of the D Vitamin every day. Around a 1000 IU should do it. With that I am off for my morning bowl of oatmeal and will then see what the day has in store. You never know. Take care and stay safe. GW

Episode 79: Joys Of Being A Writer

Episode 79: Good Morning! This podcast will give you an insight into what and how a writer feels. I am sure any writer, or wannabe writer, will be able to identify with what I have to say. With that, I hope you enjoy: Joys of Being a Writer. Take care and stay safe.

Making things Right?

Pope to visit Canada for reconciliation with Indigenous people.

I guess it can’t hurt anything, but what good it will do is another thing. Hmm … I wonder how much his visit will cost us taxpayers. Maybe the money would have been better spent helping our friends in need in other ways, like … well there are lots of things it could go towards. Makes me shake my head. Anyway, my opinion only.

What’s happening? Oct. 28/2021

Good Morning! It’s another sunny morning for us here in Port Loring, Ontario. The temperature this morning was cool, sitting at -0.3 C | 31.46 F. It’s the first morning that we have had ice in our bird bath. I guess I had better put it away for winter. It will warm up as the day moves forward. Actually … my lovely wife and I sat out on our front porch yesterday and enjoyed our coffee. Which was quite nice. And by the looks of things, we might be able to do it again today. Might as well take advantage of this weather as long as it lasts. Highway 522 is still busy these days, and I suspect it will continue to be busy for the next few weeks. Once the snow hits, things will slow down drastically. Yesterday, I worked away on a podcast and a few stories, along with trying to fix a few things that are happening with my wife’s computer. No luck. So … I will drop it off at my son’s place in North Bay in a few days for him to fix. We are lucky to have a feller that can do these things. Today I have a few things to move around outside, so best get at that before the snow flies. Easy to do now. With that I am off for my morning bowl of cereal and a cup of fresh perked coffee. Just the smell of it gets me motivated, LOL, Have a great day and stay safe. This virus hasn’t gone anywhere, it’s still lurking in the wings, patently waiting for its next victim.

Times Change

You know, years ago when a guy thought a girl was pretty, they said so. And some still do today in some instances. Like what is happening in Alberta these days with one of the cabinet members saying: “I haven’t seen you on this floor before, because with a body like that, I would have noticed you.” Gosh. A few girls I knew when I was young would have thought that downright flattering. But as I say, time has changed, and now it is all about … Hmm, could it be that some folks don’t realize a good thing when they see or hear it. Everyone is so sensitive these days. My Opinion Only.

How One Child thinks about retirement

A teacher asked her young pupils how they spent their vacation. One child wrote the following:

“We always used to spend the holidays with Grandma and Grandpa. They used to live here in a big brick house, but Grandpa got retired, and they moved to Florida.

They live in a tin box and have rocks painted green to look like grass. They ride around on big tricycles and wear name tags because they don’t know who they are anymore. Furthermore, they go to a building called a wrecked centre, but they must have got it fixed, because it is all right now.

They play games and do exercises there, but they don’t do them very well. There is a swimming pool, too, but they all jump up and down in it with their hats on. I guess they don’t know how to swim.

At their gate, there is a doll house with a little old man sitting in it. He watches all day so nobody can escape. Sometimes they sneak out. Then they go cruising in their golf carts.

My Grandma used to bake cookies and stuff, but I guess she forgot how. Nobody there cooks, they just eat out. And they eat the same thing every night: Early Birds. Some of the people can’t get past the man in the dollhouse to go out. So the ones who do get out bring food back to the wrecked centre and call it potluck.

My Grandma says Grandpa worked all his life to earn his retirement and says I should work hard, so I can be retired someday, too. When I earn my retirement, I want to be the man in the dollhouse. Then I will let people out, so they can visit their grandchildren.”

What’s happening? Oct. 27/2021

Good Morning! Well … for a change here in Port Loring we are having some sunshine. There will be a few clouds mixed in with the sunshine, which truth be told makes it just that much nicer. It’s all in how you look at things. It’s like the shadows that are caused by the sunshine shinning through the trees. My lovely wife and I can’t get enough of it, as they sure look beautiful. You know, Mother Nature has more to offer us humans than anything else here on this earth. It’s just that most don’t take the time to appreciate what is right in front of them. The reason being, they are too wrapped up with things that in reality aren’t important at all. That old saying; “Take Time To Smell The Roses.” Is sure true. My wife and I sure do. Highway 522 is still very busy with lots of trucks moving around. Lots of construction going on in our area these days. Also, as I stated in other posts, it is Hunting Season in our area, and hunters are coming in from all over. It’s not a good time to be out in the bush. Kind of a shame in one way. But in another way it’s what we human’s do. I don’t begrudge anyone hunting for food. Yesterday I finished up a new podcast for this coming Friday. Today I will start on another. In closing, I would like to thank, all those that have shared a review on other sites relating to my Podcasts. It’s nice to hear that, so many are enjoying them. At first I didn’t know what to expect when I stated these podcasts, but not anymore. I am overwhelmed. I also would like to thank all those that have written, yes written and sent me their letters saying that they are enjoying them. It means a lot. Along with all the phone calls and emails too. I should also mention for those that might be having a problem connecting their Google Home to my Podcasts. I am not sure what happened, but by Saying Hey Google! Play Just One More Story by George Walters sometimes it doesn’t work, for some reason. I am looking into it. But if that doesn’t work, say. Hey Google! Play The Walters Post. That seems to work. When you say that on your Google Home Devise, it plays the last episode. Also, for anyone that doesn’t have a Google Home, if you just go online, and type in “George Walters Podcasts,” there will be numerous sites that will come up that you can listen to them, other than here in my Blog. With that, you all have a great day and stay safe. GW

What’s happening? Oct.26/2021

It’s a cloudy, rainy morning here in Port Loring, Ontario, along with it being a touch cool. The temperature getting out of bed was sitting at 2.8 C | 37.04 F. It will warm up somewhat as the day progresses. But after today we should be seeing some sunshine. Which will be nice for a change. We have had our share of rain and then some this Fall. The ground is saturated. I am happy I put in my firewood earlier, as it would have been a mess trying to do it now. Seems Nature and me always works together. It gives me signs of what’s to come, and I then act. I think everyone has that ability, it’s that most don’t recognize it. At any rate, it has worked for me for the past 70 some years. Yesterday I worked cleaning up a few things here in the house. Today being so wet, I will work on a podcast along with some new stories for my columns in the newspapers and magazines I write for. I enjoy working away where it is warm this time of year. Especially when the real cold weather starts to enter into the picture. With that I am off for some pancakes that my lovely wife is making for us, in our waffle maker. She has a knack of making them, along with them being down right tasty. Hmm, where is the butter, can’t eat pancakes without lots of real butter. Take care, stay safe. GW

What’s happening? Oct. 24/2021

Good Morning! It’s a cloudy morning here in Port Loring, Ontario. It is also a touch cool, with the temperature getting out of bed sitting at 3.9 C | 39.02 F. We do have our oil furnace going this morning, which feels nice. Not as nice as the wood heat, but it’s still not cold enough to light up the wood furnace. It will warm up a wee bit as the day moves forward, and we might see a shower or two. The summer birds have pretty well left us with more of the winter ones visiting our bird feeder every day. It is sure nice to watch them, as it takes our minds off things that we shouldn’t be thinking about, LOL. We have our bird books out now, just in case one comes along we don’t recognize. That’s a treat when that happens. Highway 522 is still busy with the hunters that are in our area. It will remain that way for the next couple of months as Deer Season with rifles start the first of November for a couple of weeks. It’s a hunters’ paradise in our area right now. For me I choose to stay home these days. For all the meat my wife and I eat, we can buy it in the store. And … I don’t enjoy being out in the cold anymore for any length of time. Cleaning the driveway along with our decks is enough for my lovely wife and I. LOL Yesterday my wife did some cleaning upstairs as we have been putting things up there for storage since this virus started. So my wife finally said something has to be done, LOL. It’s amazing how things pile up. I think we will have a big garage sale this summer and get rid of a lot of it. I also want to build a new store and studio for my wife in our bush by our home this coming spring. But we will have to see what the price of lumber is when spring arrives. It would be nice to get it built while I am able to do these things. You never know. Today I have some work to do in the woodworking shop, so I will get to that when we finish our breakfast. Take care and stay safe. GW

What’s happening? Oct. 23/2021

Good Morning! It is a cloudy morning here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. We did however have a touch of sunshine getting out of bed. We should see some more sunshine as the day progresses. But then we are back to more rain tomorrow. I have to admit, we had our share of rain this year. At least in our area. Which is a good thing, as it sure helps with the forest fires. We also had our first skiff of snow yesterday morning. A sign of what’s to come. Highway 522 is still busy these days with lots of Moose Hunters coming into our area. Not that I have seen any directly around our area. I have seen a few out a ways from town occasionally. On another note. I did get my garlic planted in spite of it being so wet. I will have to do some work cultivating it by hand come spring, as it was too wet for me to get my Rototiller onto the soil where I wanted to plant it. Not much you can do, it is one of those years. I also manged to get the last mowing out of the way, which makes me smile, as it was getting long. I do like to leave it a bit long, but not so that it will mat up under the snow. Yesterday I worked on a story for my columns, and now I am working on a podcast for next Friday. So that will keep me busy for a few days. I also got my friend Kerry at Booth’s Garage to install my snow tires and change the oil in our car. So other than a new tie rod being installed, we should be set for winter. Always something going on with these vehicles. With that I am off for my morning bowl of cereal and will then see what the day has in store, other than what I have planned. Take care and stay safe. GW

What’s up? Oct. 20/21

Good Morning. We are seeing some sunshine this morning, with a few clouds. The temperature getting out of bed was sitting at 9.2 C | 48.56 F. It will rise as the day progresses. Later on in the day it is possible for some rain, but I think it will hold off till this evening and into tomorrow. But starting tomorrow the temperatures start to take a downward trend, but not much. For our area, things are looking pretty good for this time of year. Highway 522 is still busy these days with the hunters moving into our area. I have never seen so many old campers and trailers. But it seems that is all that matters when it comes to hunting. Any kind of roof over your head is just fine, LOL. Myself, I don’t hunt anymore. Reason being I don’t enjoy the cold. It seems the old body enjoys the indoors more every year. At least in the winter time. Yesterday I worked all day in my woodworking shop on a few projects, and today will do the same. Once that is finished and the grass dries out, I will mow it one last time, if for nothing else to gather the leaves and grass cuttings for my vegetable garden. I have to admit, I put a lot in it already this year. More than I ever did. So now that it is all tilled into the ground, it can rot all winter and come spring, we should have some fantastic soil for growing things. Easy fix for a garden that is in need of some nourishment. The only thing a person has to remember, is not to use walnut, or elm leaves and never put in pine needles. What they do is cause a blight that will take a toll on your tomatoes and things. With that I am off for my morning bowl of cereal and will then get to work. My lovely wife and I, might get in some front porch sittin’ too later on. Take care and stay safe. GW

What’s up? Oct. 19/2021

Good Morning! It’s a foggy cool morning here in Port Loring Ontario. The temperature getting out of bed was sitting at 2.7 C | 36.86 F. However, it will warm up as the day moves forward and become a really nice day, weather wise. We also had a pretty good frost last night, so anything left in the gardens would be hurt. That is, if you didn’t cover things. Which I did, as I still have a some kale that is growing nicely, and we enjoy it in our salads at night. It will be soon enough that we have to go back to buying fresh vegetables in the groceries stores. If you can call it fresh. Yesterday I worked in the old woodworking shop on a few things. I have a bunch of orders to complete, but I won’t get started on them for another few weeks, as I have other things to do first. Highway 522 is still quite busy these days with folks coming in from all over for hunting season. I don’t suspect it will be very good this year, being so warm. But you never know. If you’re in the right place at the right time, you will have venison on the table for winter. With that I am off for my morning bowl of oatmeal with a few blueberries, and will then get to work. Take care and stay safe. GW
