What’s Happening August 30/2022

Hi folks. It’s been awhile since my last post. I hope you are all well. For myself it’s been a hectic summer with my health issues. I think … I am on the mend now, we will see. It only took a bunch of trips to the hospital and, multiple tests. If it wasn’t for my doctor who looked outside the box I probably wouldn’t know now what is wrong. One in a million gets what I have. Ha ha. Figures that I would have that. It’s called Anterior Cutaneous Nerve Entrapment Syndrome. Not much they can do for it neither, other than pain killers and injections for pain, which I am getting now. Six needles or so every six weeks or so. So … we will see how that will work out in the coming days. I am moving around a bit but have to be very careful. I can’t do what I want to do. Makes it hard.

So that is my situation at the moment.

On another note it is a very cloudy wet morning here in Port Loring, Ontario. We should see some sunshine tomorrow and for the remainder of the week. And the temperatures will be pretty nice. Highway 522 is quiet these days. Reason being everyone is getting ready with the kids going back to school. Along with the price of things people can’t do what they want to these days. Crazy mixed up world we are living in at the moment.

With that I am off for a bowl of cereal that my lovely wife is making for me and after that I will be working here on my lap top writing up a story or two for my newspaper columns. Keeps my mind off other things, which is a good thing. Have a great day and stay safe. GW

Good Morning!

It’s shaping up to be one of the nicest days this year so far, weather wise, here in Port Loring, Ontario. The sun is shinning, the winds are light, coming in from the South West. Weather you can do just about anything in. Highway 522 is getting very busy now with cars, trucks, you name it coming in from all over. Our gift shop, has been exceptionally busy for the past few days. Which is sure nice as we have been close for the past two years because of this virus. We still take precautions, though, which we think should be done. It is nice seeing new faces for sure.

Yesterday I took it easy, once again I am still not the best health wise. I sure hope it starts to improve. I am not one to just sit around, but at the moment I have no choice. My doctor called yesterday, and he has recommended some other things that I can do, so we will see how that works out. He is a great man for sure, and we are happy to have him as a personal friend. He has got me through some rough times for the past few years. Hoping he can do it again.

Enough of that. On another note, our vegetable garden is growing leaps and bounds these days. We are having fresh salads every day. Can’t beat that. I had our first blossom on our old pumpkin plants the other day, so we will see if we get one that matures. Sure would be nice to have some new seeds from years past that you can’t buy anymore. Just have to wait and see. The grass is also growing now, even with the light shower we had last night. Doesn’t take much to spruce things up. Mother Nature is sure amazing to say the least. She can be cruel though if not careful. You never want to take her for granted, that’s for sure.

With that, I am off for a bowl of porridge that my lovely wife is making for me, and will then see what happens. Have great day.

In Closing, I Would Like To Wish You Well!

Good Morning!

It’s another nice looking day so far here in Port Loring, Ontario. The sun is shinning accompanied by a light breeze that is coming in from the South, South West. The temperature getting out of bed was quite nice, sitting at 21.8 C | 71.24 F. A great day for doing almost anything, if you’re up to it. My suggestion is, take advantage of the days you can do things and enjoy them to the fullest. Myself, and my wife in spite of not being in the greatest health at the moment is trying hard to make the best of things. Yesterday I didn’t do hardly anything but sit in the shade, giving this old body a rest and chatting to a few folks that dropped by our store. Actually, we had a real good day yesterday with folks dropping by. And I would like to thank all those that did. Truth be told, most of our customers for the past few days, were locals, which was sure nice to see. I suspect, though, the out-of-towners will be dropping by in July and August, which will be nice also. New faces, new ideas brings new life. Or so they say. After two years of being closed, any faces to my wife and I, is a real treat.

Highway 522 is becoming real busy these days with cars, campers moving up and down the highway. I am thinking, in spite of the gas prices, people are fed up with staying at home and are yearning for the country. And I can’t say I blame them one bit. I am hoping that I get better soon, so I can do some fishing with my old fishing buddy Barry this summer. I miss our time together. He did drop by the other day to see how I was doing, and we had a great chat. Made my day, actually.

On another note, my wife has been picking fresh vegetables from our garden for the past few days. Lettuce of all kinds, along with some real nice Kale. If there is anyone that would like some, feel free to drop by, and you can have some. We hate to see it go to waste, as we have more than we can eat. Our tomatoes I see has some small ones starting, so I am thinking in a month we should be having our first tomato sandwich. I am hoping I am able to eat them, as I sure like them. Our decade old pumpkins that my Grandfather had that my Dad gave me a long time ago, are growing leaps and bounds, so it will be interesting to see if they produce a pumpkin or two. Sometimes they only grow leaves. And these pumpkins seeds, being over a 100 years old, I don’t rightly know what to expect. Time will tell. I also found some old sunflower seeds that my Grandfather had, which I planted. They are just starting, so we will see how they make out in the coming days.

With that I am off to see if I can eat a bowl of porridge that my lovely wife is preparing for me and will then retire to the front porch.

In Closing, I Would Like To Wish You Well!

What’s Happening On June 24/2022

Good Morning!

It’s another sunny morning here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. However, the heat has left us, which made it nice for sleeping through the night. I am not a real lover of that hot stuff. Highway 522 is slowly getting busier these days with more campers, trucks with 4 Wheelers and boats … and cars moving up and down the highway. But it is much slower than other years. We have been seeing new people drop by our store the past few days, but I am thinking people are hanging onto their money more than other years. I can’t say I blame them as before their trip up to our area was the least of the problem, today with the gas prices the way they are, now it’s a priority. What used to cost fifty or sixty dollars for a tank of gas is now well over a hundred, which adds up when going on a long trip. And on top of all that, the price of furnace oil and propane is sure going to hurt a lot of people this winter. If it gets too bad, I am not sure how some are going to make out, including us. Seniors these days has it hard enough with all this going on.

On another note, my wife and I did manage to get our grass cut yesterday. We both had to take a lot of breaks to get it done. I am thinking we will have to cut back on what we have been cutting and trimming in the coming months with the way things are going health wise. We will see. Today we will take it easy once again.

The bugs haven’t been all that bad these days, which is nice. My vegetable garden is growing leaps and bounds, with fresh lettuce of all kinds on the table come supper time. Sure is tasty. We do need a rain, however, as things are really dry. My pumpkins, zucchini, potatoes and tomatoes are showing off these days, so it won’t be long before we start enjoying them. My cucumbers and squash were slow staring off, but they are coming along now. With that I am off to see if I can eat something and will then see what the day has in store … other than what I have planned. Life is a mystery, for sure … you just never know.

In Closing, I Would Like To Wish You well.

What’s Happening On June 22/2022

Good Morning!

It’s a touch cloudy here this morning in Port Loring, Ontario. But the clouds are burning off fast, and I suspect the sunshine will be boring down on us shorty. There are heat warnings up once again for our area. It will cool down a wee bit tomorrow, but will still remain quite warm, staying in the high 80s F. Highway 522 is slowly getting busier and will continue that way for the next couple of months. The mosquitoes and black flies aren’t bothering anybody through the day, but the deer flies are with us and annoying anyone they come in contact with. My son bought me a hand bug sapper that I now use when sitting on my front porch. I have to admit they work pretty good.

On another note, I haven’t been doing all that much lately, as I am still not feeling all that good. So more rest is needed till I get well. I have bad days and fair days. At any rate, we are making good use of our front porch these days.

Today I will be taking it easy once again. With that, I am off for a bowl of oatmeal and then will open our small store that my lovely wife looks after. Take care and stay safe.

What’s Happening On June 19/2022

Good Morning!

It’s another nice looking day here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. Hardly a cloud in the sky. The good news is the wind has died down, as it has been major windy for the past three days. It’s also been quite cool. The temperature here for Father’s Day is sitting at 10.7 C | 51.26 F. It will warm up a lot as the day moves forward. And we could see a shower later on in the day. The mosquitoes and black flies haven’t been all that bad, but the deer flies are sure annoying in places.

Highway 522 is getting busier with folks moving around more. Most are from our area, out and about checking out stores here in town. In spite of it being cool and windy, we had a fair turn out at our small store yesterday, with folks dropping by. I suspect the price of gas, groceries and taxes is kind of making people more cautious these days when it comes to travelling and spending. I can’t say I blame them, neither. Building has come to a grinding halt with the price of lumber and things. They think by raising the prices they will make more money, but they are wrong as people are starting to see what they are doing and will start to put things on hold, and stop spending. Which is the right thing to do, as it is the only way we the working man can make them change their ways. What goes around, comes around, I always say.

Yesterday my wife and I didn’t do too much as we both aren’t all that well yet. We are hoping things will change for the better sooner than later. Hard to predict with a couple old bodies. But we make the best of it when ever possible.

With that I am going to see if I can eat something and will then once it warms up retire to my rocking chair on our new front porch. I am glad I got that fixed up, as we both use it a lot, especially now.

In Closing, I Would Like To Wish You Well. And Happy Father’s Day to all them Fathers out there.

What’s Happening On June 17/2022

Good Morning!

It’s a really nice day here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. The sun is shinning, things have cooled down some, and the humidity has left us. What could be better than that? Not much in my eyes. It will warm up a wee bit as the day moves forward. Nice weather for doing some outside work. Not that I can do much at the moment. And my lovely wife has been feeling poorly too, she has been overdoing things. So in all reality, we both have to take it a bit easy these days. Yesterday we both got the mowing of our property out of the way, but it took all we had to do it. Today we will open up our store and take things a bit easy. Chatting to customers that drop by for a visit. We have a real good selection of new items this year, which I am thinking will impress a lot of buyers and friends. As I have said in other posts … it is a small store, but it is loaded up with unique, one of a kind items and once I feel better I will get to making a lot more. We will see how that goes.

Highway 522 is getting busier every day in spite of the gas prices being so high. What will happen now after raising it up to $2.20 a Litre they will drop it down to around $2.00 a litre and everyone will be happy. That’s the way they do things in this country, and with so many folks having blinders on, they can’t see what these companies are doing. It was the same as bringing in the metric system, as it fools people into thinking they are getting a great deal, when they really honestly aren’t. Sign of the times, for sure.

So with that bit of info under your hat, I am off for a boiled egg and a piece of toast and will then ease my way into things. Take care and stay safe. GW

What’s Happening On June 14/2022

Good Morning!

It’s a nice day here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. The sun is shinning without a cloud in the sky obstructing it. And the temperature is set to rise as the day progresses. Getting out of bed, it was sitting at … 16.4 C | 61.52 F. Can’t beat that. However, it will become quite hot for the next two or three days, so it might pay to keep your curtains closed a bit to keep the cool in and the heat out. Highway 522 isn’t all that busy yet, but there were a lot of cars, trucks and campers in North Bay yesterday as my wife and I had to go pick up some medicine I needed, along with some groceries and things. Other than feeling a bit poorly, it was a great day,

I see that not many folks today are wearing a mask anymore. I guess they just gave up, but for my wife and I we will be still wearing ours when we are out in public or in stores. We figure it’s best to be safer than sorry, and hey! Even if it stops the common cold or flu, that’s a plus. On the other side of the coin, the price of gas didn’t help cheer us up any, with it sitting at $2:20 a litre. You sure don’t get much for fifty dollars any more these days. And the price of groceries wasn’t all that good, neither. I suspect we are going to be in for some real hard times. My advice is to start putting what you can away money wise. Cut down on things and feed your needs, not your wants. I also think a lot of people have been living above their means for a lot of years here in Canada, which will make it hard for them to get by. The Powers That Be has got us into a real pickle at the moment, and I am not sure if they can get us out of it. They printed too much money, for one thing, and are spending in places that they shouldn’t be. And I don’t mean here in Canada, neither. Spending abroad has to stop in my eyes immediately. You know, I am thinking our world is going to have to make a huge lifestyle change in the coming months and years. Something like we have never seen before. With them happy notes, I am off for a boiled egg and a piece of toast, and will then see what the day has in store.

In Closing I Would Like To Wish Well.

What’s Happening On June 12/2022

Good Morning!

It’s a cloudy, wet morning here in Port Loring, Ontario. It is also a touch cool with the temperature, getting out of bed sitting at 13.6 C | 56.48 F. It rained most of the night which gave all the plants a good drink. And it was a nice rain, not a downpour. It will warm up a wee bit as the day moves forward. And if lucky, we could see some sunshine later on in the day. Which would be nice. Tomorrow however will be a lot nicer with lots of sunshine along with warmer temperatures entering back into the picture. Highway 522 isn’t all that busy yet as with the price of gas folks are staying close to home. But … people are people and I think, come the first of July when the kids are out of school, and they begin to pester the parents things will change and folks will be heading north, into the parks and small towns, seeking out what Nature has to offer. Damn if they do and damned if they don’t you could say.

On another note, we had a good turn out with customers dropping by yesterday, visiting our small store picking up a few things that they liked. It’s nice to chat to folks for a change, after being shut down for two years.

Yesterday I took it easy, not doing much as the wife has been watching me closely, not letting me do any hard work. It’s a full time job on her part. But I know she is right, I need to ease off things for a spell till I get better. Today I will tinker around in my woodworking shop, cleaning it up a bit. It’s a mess after rebuilding our front deck. Which should keep me out of trouble.

With that, I am off for a boiled egg and a piece of toast that my lovely wife is making for me.

In Closing, I Would Like To Wish You Well.

What’s Happening On June 9/2022

Good Morning!

It’s a cloudy morning here in Port Loring, Ontario. The temperature has dropped through the night, which made it nice for sleeping. Getting out of bed, it was sitting at 11.6 C | 52.88 F. We could see a few showers off and on throughout the day. Tomorrow things will be a bit better sunshine wise. Which is what we enjoy.

On another note, we did manage to get my front deck finished up, which made me smile. It was a challenge with not feeling all that good. But I managed. So now we have our porch to do some front porch sittin’ on. It should last for another few years. Most is all brand new once again.

The mosquitoes weren’t all that bad while working out there, but them pesky horse and deer flies were a touch annoying. Once they find you, they don’t leave you alone. I think I wore my hat out, swatting them. Ha Ha.

Today we are planning on getting our grass mowing out of the way for another week, that is if the rain holds off for us. The grass is nice and dry so far this morning, which will make things easier. If not, it will have to wait till tomorrow. You never know what Mother Nature has up her sleeve these days. Usually she cooperates with me.

With that, I am off for a bowl of cereal and will then ease into doing some work. Take care and have a great day. GW

What’s Happening On June 8/2022

Good Morning!

We are finally seeing some sunshine this morning for a change. It is still a bit cool with the temperature sitting at 13.9 C | 57.02 F. It will warm up as the day progresses and the warmer weather will remain with us now for most of the summer. The nice thing is the nighttime temperatures for the next month will remain cool, which will make it nice for sleeping. Shaping up to be a perfect summer for our area. Highway 522 is slow this morning traffic wise, but it will pick up a bit later on today. With the price of gas and things, people are having to stay at home more than they would like too. And I can’t say I blame them. Where … two years ago it would cost us $30.00 to go to North Bay for groceries is now costing us around $60.00 for gas. That takes a big chuck out of what we will be buying when in town. We have cut back substantially grocery wise, my wife and I.

You know, I bought a pair of work shoes at Walmart last year for around $40.00, thinking that it was a good deal. The thing is, as of yesterday I looked, and they are about had it already. I didn’t even get a full year out of wearing them before they fell apart. Made in China. So that will be another expense in the coming days. I don’t mind paying a bit more for certain items if they last a few years. But it is not only shoes. It is the same with a lot of things these days. And I suspect it will get a lot worse in the coming months. Especially with those with mortgages, as the interest rate will be rising more throughout the summer. Which is going to hurt a lot of people when it comes due for renewal.

Although it isn’t as high as what my wife and I were paying many years ago with it then sitting at 18% – 20%. We made out, but it sure wasn’t easy, let me tell you. I am thinking a lot of people will have to make some major lifestyle changes in the coming months.

With that, I am off for a boiled egg and then see about finishing this deck out front so my lovely wife and I can do some front porch sittin’. Which we both are in need of these days.

In Closing, I Would Like To Wish You Well!

What’s Happening On June 7/2022

Good Morning! It’s another cloudy day here, waking up in Port Loring, Ontario. We did have a lot of rain through the night. I suspect the rain will remain with us till this afternoon. Tomorrow however things should start to clear up and if lucky we will see a bit of sunshine. But we could see a few lingering showers here and there. And along with all that, the temperatures starting tomorrow will start to warm up.

Which is what I am looking forward too so my wife and I can finish up this front porch of ours. Pretty hard to do any front porch sittin’ without a porch. We use it a lot through the summer months. There are lots of things I would like to do, but with the price of lumber these days it’s hard. So the bare necessities only get done. Not much a person can do about it, other than complain.

Highway 522 isn’t too busy at the moment, but things will pick up when the sun returns, and we get closer to the weekend.

Today I will see if I can do some work outside, but will have to see if the weather will cooperate. If not, I will see about cleaning up my woodworking shop, as it is a mess at the moment. I also need to do some hoeing in our vegetable garden as the weeds are sneaking in and around the plants. You have to stay on these things, or they can get out of control very quickly.

With that I am off for a bite to eat that my lovely wife is making for me, and will then see how I feel. I am still not feeling that great. I hope I get well soon, so I can get things back to normal. Take care and stay safe. GW

What’s Happening On June 6/2022

It’s a cloudy, rainy day here in Port Loring, Ontario. And on top of that it is quite cool outside with the temperature getting out of bed sitting at … 11.1 C | 51.98 F. It will warm up a wee bit as the day progresses but not much. The rain will also stay with us for today and most of tomorrow. So … knowing that, I don’t suspect I will be doing too much outside work. Being so cool, we had to turn on our oil furnace for the past two mornings to take out the dampness and warm things up a bit. Here it is June and still have to be heating our home. Weird weather these days, for sure. But it’s better than shovelling snow. Highway 522 is a touch busy at certain times of the day, but not as busy as it has been other years. I suspect it’s because of the gas prices and government doings. I could say more on the subject, but they aren’t worth the energy I waste on talking about them.

The blackflies are pretty well all gone now, and the mosquitoes. If you’re in the sunshine, they, aren’t all that bad. My wife and I worked on our front deck all day yesterday, and they didn’t bother us at all. Which was nice. It was a really nice day yesterday, the sun was shinning down upon us, along with not being too hot or too cold. Great day. Today is a different story. We did get all the underneath things fixed up with our deck, looks like new now. Once it warms up some and the rain stops, I will then put on the new boards for the top. After that, we should be good for a few more years. I hope. They sure don’t put out lumber like they used to, that’s for sure. And the price … man, for what I paid for the lumber I could have bought a new car years ago. LOL Sheesh.

Today I will take a much-needed rest and nurse my body, which it needs right now. You would think I would learn after so many years. My lovely wife is constantly telling me to take it easy. The thing is, I know better, and I also know she is right. Crazy the way the mind works sometimes. Anyway, I am off for a bowl of cereal and will then … maybe tinker around in the old woodworking shop for a bit. It needs some cleaning and things. I will see how I feel. Take care and stay safe. GW

What’s Happening On June 9/2022

Good Morning! Sorry for not being here in my Blog lately, still been feeling poorly. I feel good one day and not so good the next day. As I say, it’s nothing to do with the virus, just an old body with a few parts wearing out I guess. I am hoping it gets better sooner than later. But I am working on it, I don’t give up on things. Anyway, on to more pleasant things.

It was cloudy this morning early, but I do see some clear skies on the horizon, which should warm things up a bit as it has been cool for the past day or so. And windy. Fishing isn’t the greatest as yet. The black flies however have all but left, which is okay with me. The mosquitoes are with us, but not so bad. I think this cool weather slowed them down some. The dragon flies are around, they clean most of the blackflies and mosquitoes up. It’s nice to see them. But the birds also like them blood sucking parasites, as they are none stop eating them in our yard.

Highway 522 is picking up with cars, trucks and campers these days. Nice to see folks moving around enjoying life. It’s too bad more doesn’t take advantage of these things, as life is short. I have always said make the most of each day doing what you want and like. On another note, my vegetable garden is really growing. My garlic this year has never been better. My potatoes are showing a lot of leaves and our lettuce is about ready to eat. Our tomatoes are getting up to size, but still has a lot of growing to do before we have any to eat. We also have a some corn showing above ground, which should be tasty later on. I also have some pumpkins which can grow and weight up to 50 – 100 pounds. They are some ancient seeds that my grandfather had put away over a hundred years. I found them while looking through some old boxes and decided to plant them. With in one week they were sprouting. I made a special area for them out back of our house, so we will see how they work out. Hard to say being so old. But nature is sure amazing, let me tell you.

With that my friends, I am off for a bowl of cereal, that my lovely wife is preparing for me. I will then rest for a bit, then see if I can do something outside. We have an old deck on the front of our house needing repair. Something like I need you could say. I just have to be very careful these days. Anyway take care and stay safe, this virus is still there, not as bad, but it still can make certain people very sick. GW

What’s Happening On May 28/2022

Good Morning! Sorry for not posting any information here on my Blog for the past few days. I have had some issues’ health wise. In the hospital and now back home. Nothing to do with the virus. Just some other ongoing things, that we hope are under control.

Starting things off, it is a sunny morning here in Port Loring, Ontario. The temperatures have been actually pretty nice for this time of year. Waking up, it was sitting at 14.6 C | 58.28 F. It will warm up as the day moves forward. Highway 522 isn’t as busy as it was other years, but that is to be expected with the weather we have been having along with the gas prices and other things that are happening in our country. I suspect though it will pick up in with June in our midst. The Black flies are still with us and the mosquitoes have made their appearance. We have to shake ourselves off before entering the house or … we are in for some swatting later on in the evening hours when trying to sleep.

On another note, I haven’t been busy doing much around the house here these days with not being well, but I hope things get back to normal in the coming days. We did manage to get our vegetable garden planted beforehand, though, which is a good thing. It’s nice to be able to look outside and watch things grow, especially things that you can bring in to the table.

With that, my friends, I am off for a bowl of cereal. I just put my pillows out on the front porch chairs, so I am thinking that will be where I will be residing for a few days. In Closing!

I Would Like To Wish You Well.

My Lovely Wife Painted The Picture For Mike Clapperton. For All His Maple Syrup Jugs.

Good Morning. We are having some sunshine this morning, but it is a bit cool with the temperature waking up sitting at …. 9.9 C | 49.82 F. It will warm up somewhat as the day moves forward. So all in all, everyone in our area had a pretty good long weekend, weather wise. Now in Niagara it’s a different story with a lot of high winds and things which caused all kinds of issues. Highway 522 is slow this morning, but it will pick up as the day moves forward. Yesterday I worked most of the day in my woodworking shop fixing a few things. Today I will do the same.

On another note, our garlic is sure growing this year. It is up almost two feet at the moment and looking good. I did plant my pumpkins yesterday outside, but I covered them up before going to bed just in case of a frost. We didn’t have any, but it did get down close to where we could have. It’s a hard year to figure out when to plant things as the nights are staying quite cool. I am thinking by the looks of things we won’t get all our vegetables planted till late in the week. I am keeping a close eye on things.

With that I am off for some Pancakes … that my lovely wife is making for me and will then see what the day has in store. I am looking forward to some of Mikes Maple Syrup, It is gooooood! Why not pick up a jug or two. He won the award forThe Worlds Best. Have a great day and stay safe. GW

What’s Happening On May 22/2022

It’s a cloudy morning here in Port Loring, Ontario. We will also be having some showers off and on this morning. If we are lucky, we might see some sunshine tomorrow. But cooler temperatures will be upon us for most of next week. Along with some more rain off and on. So it’s going to be kind of a mixed bag of weather for a few days. Highway 522 is getting busy. I got up through the night and cars with boats along with campers were going up and down the highway at 2:00 AM. It’s a sign of what’s to come.

On another note, the Blackflies are still annoying, but not as bad as other years. And … yes, the Mosquitoes have started to make themselves noticed. All this damp, warm weather gets them to moving around.

Yesterday I worked away in my old woodworking shop for a bit. Fixed up my old rototiller a bit more and worked in my vegetable garden getting it ready to plant. I will probably do that the middle of the week, as that is when the nighttime temperatures are looking pretty good. I like it to stay around the 50 F mark at nights before I plant. The old saying when I was farming many years ago. Don’t plant till after the 24th of May. I can still hear my old Dad saying that.

With that bit of info under your hat, that is if you wear a hat, I am off for coffee and piece of toast this morning. I don’t feel all that hungry. Have a great day and stay safe. There is still a lot of sickness in our area these days. GW
