Mentality of some

An industry association says a Sudbury grocery store likely won’t be the last to give up on selling alcohol.

I sometimes wonder where the minds are of some people. It’s not going to help one bit by stopping the sales of alcohol in grocery stores. People will simply buy it elsewhere. The only ones they are hurting are themselves. But in saying that, the Beer Store will be happy. Ha Ha

And it should be noted that it isn’t about what folks eat or drink, be it sugar, pop, food or alcohol, it’s all about moderation.

Good Morning! We are having some sunshine here in Port Loring, Ontario, this morning. But it is cold, with the temperature sitting at -21.1 C | -5.98 F. It will warm up a wee bit as the day progresses, but not much. Tonight however it will warm up substantially, and we could see the temperature rise above the freezing mark tomorrow. But that will be short-lived as the temperatures will fall very quickly one again tomorrow night. Later on today and through the night, we could see around 4 inches of new snow, along with some more for tomorrow. So … we got a mixed bag of weather heading our way. But looking at things, it’s been that way for a while now. As of now, Highway 522 is bare and dry, but that will change later on today. So if you have anything planned, it might pay to do it this morning. On another note, yesterday I worked away here on the Blog. Got a lot done with the help of my son Karl. Today I will get back to writing up stories for my newspaper columns, along with some podcasts. I like to get them out of the way through the winter months, as come summer I hate being stuck inside the house. Especially when fishing season arrives. Talking about fishing, we haven’t been out in our boat for two years now. First with this darn virus and second when we did head on out last fall, we had some trailer and motor trouble. This year, I am hoping things will be better. I did have Kerry, my friend, who owns Booth’s Garage here in town fix up my boat trailer and get me a new battery, so things should be good in that department. If there is one thing I enjoy, it is fishing with my buddy Barry. Who I haven’t seen that much since this virus entered into the picture. I am beginning to have Barry withdrawals. Ha Ha. With that, I am off for a piece of toast with my lovely wife, and will then get to work. Take care and stay safe. GW

Good Morning! It’s a cloudy morning here in Port Loring, Ontario. The temperature getting out of bed was sitting at -14.4 C | 6.08 F. It won’t warm up much more than it is now. Highway 522 is mostly bare, so travelling will be good. Although we could see some light snow off and on throughout the day. We didn’t have any more snow overnight. But the good news is that, the real cold weather has left us for a day or so. Makes me happy, as my old body doesn’t like the cold that much anymore. If it wasn’t for this virus, my lovely wife and I would be sitting in the sunny south. But the way it stands now, that isn’t about to happen. It’s risky enough right here at home. On another note, I got a lot of work done here yesterday on my computer. Today I will do the same. I am setting up a few things to make the Blog better, with the help of my son. It’s nice to have a technologist that knows almost everything there is to know about computers at arms length. So to speak. Actually, he does most things remotely from his apartment, along with guiding me over the phone. It’s pretty amazing how far we have come over the past few years. With that, I am off for some pancakes that my lovely wife is making me, and will then see what the day has planned other than what I am wanting to do. Life’s a mystery. You never know. Take care and stay safe. GW

School

For some Canadian students, school disruptions have become routine.

If asked, I would say that most of all our students in school these days are more than happy to work from home.

I also think that they are doing it all wrong with the students going online. My suggestion would be doing as we did years ago when the young ones were out of school, either by sickness or going on a vacation.

The parent goes to the school. They tell them the situation and the teacher gives them enough homework for one week. They take the homework home and the parents make sure they get it done. Usually the kids can do a weeks work within a day or so.

It then is taken back to the teacher, who looks things over. That’s it. Simple way of doing things.

To me, this online thing is a waste of time and money.

Take Care. GW

Information and how it is displayed

Pacific tsunami threat wanes, but volcanic ash from the eruption hinders response.

So … most of us know the article above is related to an eruption of a volcano that happened a couple of days ago.

The thing that catches my attention, so to speak, is how they have to keep it on going. When actually it was, or is, no threat at all. They do that with a lot of things on the internet today.

Another example would be: An asteroid is heading toward earth. So immediately everyone has to have a look-see. I would. But when you do go to the site, you find out that, yes … it is heading in our direction, but they didn’t tell you, that it would pass earth by a million miles or more. But it doesn’t stop there, as when you click on that site, you just sent hundreds if not thousands of dollars to the sponsors of that site. Ha Ha. Hey, I am not saying it is the wrong thing to do … in part, as I do it all the time. But it does show you, how information, be it false or fact, can change a persons way of thinking. Truth be told, I believe that is how Facebook made its millions, along with other social media platforms.

Anyway, you have a great day. GW

Contributors wanted!

Just a note to let you know, that I am looking for contributors, writers or what ever to help me out here at my Blog. If anyone is interested, drop me a line at [email protected]

For years, I have done it all on my own, but with my columns in newspapers and magazines, along with my podcasts, and this blog, it is becoming to be a bit much. Not that I am complaining, as I enjoy writing and sharing different things with you. I just thought it would be nice to have a few others share their views, pictures, advice or what ever. Which, I am sure, would make the Blog, that much more interesting.

You know, years ago I had a Woodworking group called the “Old Craftsman“. I started it, so woodworkers of all ages, be it professionals or wannabee’s, could come and share their ideas and learn. I didn’t know what to expect, but within one year I had over 500 Members in the group. They posted pictures of things they made, and shared their knowledge freely. I also made some great friends.

So that is what I would like to do here at my Blog. It would be a place that you can share your ideas or ask for advice.

I don’t want the Blog to be about just one topic, neither. I would like people to talk about all kinds of things. Be it writing, becoming a columnist, farming, gardening, natural health related issues, nature, country living, doesn’t matter, the more, the merrier. Pictures would also be a nice touch, as the old saying goes … “A Picture is worth a thousand words.” And one last thing. You don’t have to post on a daily basis, it will be up to you. No pressure. And, I am also open to new ideas that you might have on improving the Blog.

I should also mention that I use WordPress for my Blog, it’s a very easy platform to work with. Anyway, give it some thought, and if you’re interested let me know, and I will add you as a Moderator. Once that is done, you can pretty well do anything you want. George Walters

Good Morning! It’s a down right cold morning here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. The temperature getting out of bed was sitting at -30.2 C | -22.36 F. It will warm up a bit as the day progresses, but not that much. We didn’t have any more snow overnight. Highway 522 is partially snow covered, with some icy sections throughout. So once again, care should be taken if out and about. In saying that, when we went to town the other day we found that even though we were going the speed limit, almost everyone was passing us. I guess they can’t wait to get to Tim Hortons. There are a lot of people ice fishing these days, as I see a lot of ice shacks out on the lakes. I am not into ice fishing anymore, as the real cold seems to bother me these days. Sign of the time, I suppose. On another note, I noticed we had a few deer overnight checking out our bird feeder. They clean up all the excess seed that the birds knock off the bird feeder throughout the day. One thing about living in the country, nothing much goes to waste. Yesterday being so cold, I stayed inside where it was warm. Today I will do the same. With that, I am off to put some more wood in our furnace and will then see what the day has in store. I haven’t made up my mind yet on what I want to do. Actually, it’s nice being able to do that. In closing,

I would also like to take a sec and thank all those that have taken the time to say hello, here on the BLog and through E-Mails, letting me know they are enjoying the Blog and my Podcasts. Makes it all worthwhile. Take care and stay safe.

Vaccinations & Truckers

The federal government says the vaccine mandate for truckers crossing into Canada from the United States will come into effect this Saturday as planned, despite a previous statement from the Canada Border Services Agency that said Canadian truck drivers would be exempt.

Well, I don’t usually side with the Liberals, heck I don’t usually side with any political party, but in this case I think they have done the right thing. It’s about time they stood up for doing what’s right. It’s a no-brainer, if you’re not vaccinated, you shouldn’t be allowed into our country. The truth of the matter is, it is for the good of the unvaccinated too. But putting all things aside, at the very least it helps slow down the virus a bit, so that our hospitals can cope with things. Every bit helps.
