One More Story (Fresh Fruit Finds It’s Way North)

Years ago when my Dad was alive, he used to tell me stories of the tough years through out his life along with his early farming days. Story goes, he was having a hard time finding enough sales for his produce or at least not enough to pay the bills. That got him to thinking, since he came from Northern Ontario before his farming days, he new the north pretty well. He also knew that folks up in the north, had a heck of a time getting fresh fruit. That’s where it all started.
He decided to truck fruit to the north, figuring it would help them and him to. He planned out his run and that summer he loaded up his truck with peaches, pears, cherries, pretty well everything he grew. Once there he drove around from house to house, knocking on doors. Ended up he said, he was sold out before dinner. He kept it up and soon had his regular customers and stopped to see them every Saturday. Also along the way up to the north, he started to stop off at small stores and eventually he was selling quite a few baskets to them too. For about ten years he did that and then one day he decided to go to the town and see if they would be interested in opening a Farmers Market, where folks could bring their produce and sell it. Dad going from door to door in the towns and all across the rural areas, got to know a lot of farmers. He got to talking to them and with their help the first Farmers Market was opened in a small town in the Northern Ontario.
For the rest of his life he hauled fruit to that market and did quite well. He had a vision, that Dad of mine and would never sit still when times got tough. Ended up he said, he made more in the tough times, than he did in the good times. Folks began to rely on him being at the market for their fresh fruit and Dad, well, he enjoyed doing it. He loved to talk to folks and what better place than the market.
He had some hard times later on, as once folks realized he was making a good living off hauling fruit to the north, others tried to push in on his customers. But for most parts, they were dedicated and Dad did all right.
I remember him saying how he hauled fruit to this one grocery store and had been keeping them supplied in fresh fruit for over twenty years. One Saturday he pulled the truck up to the door like he always did and started to unload the fruit they ordered. A fellow came out and said.
“Sorry to say this Earl but we won’t be needing your fruit any more. We have found it cheaper to bring it in from, well I won’t say, but another country.”
That upset Dad quite a bit, as he figured that since he had helped build this fellows business and kept him supplied with fresh fruit for so many years, that he shouldn’t be looking elsewhere, just to save a few cents. Also the fruit quality wasn’t half as good as what we grew right here in Ontario.
Ended up old Dad lost that store to sell to but he didn’t take these things lightly. What he did was, just a block away he had made good friends with some folks, that owned some vacant property. He did some thinking and got busy and built a good size fruit market just down the street from the Grocery Store. He then started to make two trips a week, one for the fruit market he built and one for the Farmers Market. For over ten more years, he kept it open and that grocery store ended up moving to another part of town. Still didn’t do too well in the produce department, as Dads customers in town were still dedicated to him.
Back then a fellow had a bit of a chance against the big guys but today of course its a loss cause. To bad too as these small business’s is what made this country and for that matter is what is keeping this country going today. Some just don’t see it, or don’t want to see it. Also, since we don’t grow to much of our own produce in this country any more, we are missing out in what used to be, the best in the world.
Well there you go, how the first fruit arrived to some parts of the north and how one Farmers Market got started.

Improve Digestion Here Is A Bit Of Help
1. Drink Your Water… But Not During Meals:The digestive system needs to be well hydrated like the rest of the body, but downing glasses of water near mealtime will impair digestive strength and may cause upsets
2. Eat Clean: The body wasn’t meant to digest chemical food additives, artificial sweeteners or extruded grains
3. Go Raw:Getting at least some raw, live foods in with every meal will give your digestion a break and your body a more complete set of nutrients.
4. Get Fermented: Foods that have been fermented (like sauerkraut) are so potent only a few tablespoons each day will provide the body with a hefty digestive punch that can make a world of difference in gastrointestinal health.
5. Try a Little Bitterness:Herbs like dandelion, gentian and yarrow are just a few examples of bitter herbs that are usually combined in a tincture to use directly before or after meals to stimulate bile production.
6. Say No to Stress:Try not to rush meals, shovel food down your throat or grab hurried bites between trips to the copy machine. Mealtime should be relaxing and enjoyable. Your digestion will thank you.
Watch Them Shopping Carts For Health
For many years and into today I have constantly told folks that every time one goes shopping as soon as you are back home, the first thing you should do is wash your hands with a good hand soap, I use good old Tide can’t be beat. I never use antibacterial soap as that just makes things worse. On route from shopping one should at the very least keep ones hands away from ones face. Shopping carts are gaining the reputation as one of the dirtiest and most germ-contaminated public items. The cart seats and handles have considerable more bacteria that even toilet seats and flush handles. Shoppers are blissfully unaware that bacteria and viruses, such as E. coli, staphylococcus, salmonella, and influenza, can live on grocery carts and their handles for three days. A study found at least 21 percent of the shopping cart seats tested contained bodily fluids, such as blood, mucus, saliva, fecal matter, and urine. Bacteria from these body fluids can be threatening, especially to those with frail immune systems and children. So if you want to help yourself and family stay healthy wash your hands like your mother and father keeps tellin’ ya. Well most mothers and fathers I should say as the world is changing from when I was young. My opinion only.
Garlic For Health Folks One Clove A Day
For many years I have spoke out about how good garlic is for ones health. Now in saying this I mean garlic grown here in Canada or the US. The one I like the best has a bluish ting to it. Nice and tasty and can be eaten raw with a bit of cheese and should say raw is the only way to eat it. I have a clove every night with my supper. For health can’t be beat. Tests have found raw garlic more powerful than even penicillin and tetracycline. This is without destroying the digestive intestinal flora, which pharmaceutical antibiotics do. It’s also effective for TB, high blood pressure and hundreds of other ailments. Also, unlike heavy pharmaceutical antibiotic use, garlic does not diminish the immune system. It actually enhances the immune system.
Garlic prevents cancer and contributes toward tumour shrinkage, especially stomach, colon, and breast and prostate cancers. The Russians have known this for decades. More recently, this has been formally recognised by Dr. John Pinto, Ph.D of the normally anti-alternative natural cancer remedy Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute. So………………up to you. Ten Reasons The Long Gun Registry Should Be Eliminated
Claim No. 1: Access to a gun increases the risk of murder.
False: Canadian gun owners are less likely than other Canadians to commit homicide.
Claim No. 2: Rifles and shotguns are the weapons most likely to be used in domestic homicides.
False: The problem is the murder of family members, not the means of killing. Rifles and shotguns are not the weapons most likely to be used in domestic homicides. Knives are.
Claim No. 3: Spousal murders with guns have fallen threefold since the law passed, while spousal murders without guns have remained the same.
False: Spousal murders have slowly been declining since the mid-1970s. There is no empirical support for the claim that the long-gun registry has reduced spousal murders. The long-gun registry was not begun until 2001.
Claim No. 4: Stronger gun laws have helped reduce gun violence.
False: The rate of homicides committed with a firearm generally declined from the mid-1970s to 2002. This steady, long-term decline has been driven by economic and demographic changes. However, the use of firearms in homicide has increased since 2002.
Claim No. 5: Firearms stolen from legal owners are a significant source of crime guns. Registration is essential to prevent dangerous individuals from getting guns.
False: All studies of crime guns agree that stolen registered firearms are infrequently involved. It is the criminal record check, which is part of licensing, and certainly not registration, that stops criminals from getting guns legally. Bill C-391 will not change the current provisions for obtaining a firearms licence. Registration simply refers to the firearm, not the owner.
Claim No. 6: Firearms pose more problems in smaller cities where there are more gun owners.
False: Homicide is a particularly acute problem in large cities where ironically there are fewer legal gun owners.

False: The long-gun registry does not contain information on a gun’s location. The registry only contains descriptive information about the registered guns.
In approaching dangerous situations, the police must assume there is a weapon.
Claim No. 8: The gun registry is consulted by police 10,000 times a day and provides important information.
False: Almost all of the “inquiries” are routinely generated by traffic stops or firearm sales and are not specifically requested, nor do police often find them useful. Almost all of these inquiries involve licensing, not the long-gun registry.
Claim No. 9: Polls show Canadians believe the gun registry should not be dismantled.
False: Two recent polls show that the public does not support the long-gun registry. This is consistent with at least 11 earlier polls, all of which have clearly demonstrated that the Canadian public has no faith in the long-gun registry or its ability to increase public safety.
Claim No. 10: Stronger gun laws have helped reduce gun-related death, injury, violence and suicide.
False. No properly designed study has been able to show that gun laws have been responsible for reducing criminal violence rates or suicide rates in any country in the world.
In sum, the test of any governmental program should be whether it meets its goals. In this case, the long-gun registry has failed.

North Bay Literacy Council Banquet
Well folks just thought I would let you all know the Banquet at the North Bay Literary Council went exceptionally well. They had around 100 folks attend and was an all around good evening. All the members there through my eyes should be commended on making the banquet so successful. It was done up professionally right down to the last detail. I would also like to say thanks to them all for asking me to speak and make my wife and I feel right at home, it was great night. Some pictures with staff and the Mayor of North Bay were taken, along with me up speaking, so thought I would share them also. Again, thanks…… you folks are doing a fantastic job. George & Ruth Walters.

Friday Morning Humor
A police officer in Penticton stops at a local ranch to talk with an old rancher. He tells the rancher, “I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown drugs.” The rancher says, “Okay, but don’t go in that field over there.”
The Police officer verbally explodes saying, “Mister, I have the authority of the Federal Government with me.”
Reaching into his rear pants pocket, he removes his badge and proudly displays it to the rancher. “See this badge old man? This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish… On any land. No questions asked or answers given. Have I made myself clear? Do you understand?”
The rancher nods politely, apologizes, and goes about his chores.
A short time later, the old rancher hears loud screams and sees the Police officer running for his life chased by the rancher’s big Santa Gertrudis bull……
With every step the bull is gaining ground on the officer, and it seems likely that he”he’ll get gored before he reaches safety. The officer is clearly terrified. The rancher throws down his tools, runs to the fence and yells at the top of his lungs……
“Your badge!…… Show him your Darn BADGE!”
Happenings In And Around Our Town Of Port Loring
For a good many years while growing up and even today I have always looked forward to our Fall Fairs. In Beamsville it was held downtown at the Fair Grounds with a Carnival, food and a good number of other things like a demolition derby, never missed one.
The thing that gets to me some is that for most parts a lot of these events are closing up. Right now for that matter Beamsville is going through a transition stage of not having the Fair Grounds anymore and selling off the land it sits on to build homes. Some call this progress I suppose but for me I see it as a great loss for the town.
Seems to me that if left alone the Fall Fair Grounds would be a great asset to the town or other towns that are going through the same thing. Thing is folks these things can’t be replaced once gone they are gone forever. To bad too as half the town I see is for keeping it the other half wants to sell it off. Who will win, well I think you all know what the outcome will be.
I know some say what does it matter to you now that you are living here in Port Loring. Well lets just say living there for a good number of years I just hate to see so many changes happening that messes up so many folks life styles and leave it at that.
Here in Port Loring though lots of different things are on the go. For one thing last year I was voted in as one of our LSB members and I got to say it has been quite an experience. Luckily I have had four other good members to work with which is something in itself. For most parts the first year has been getting things in order and helping out where I can. My part is looking after Marketing which I have been doing diligently over the past year. Got to say I have enjoyed it too. So far I have set up a new Web Site for our district which if I might say has been quite successful so far. Here is the Web Sites Address if you would like to have a look. http://www.loringlsb.com/ There you will find all kinds of things like when and where our next meeting will be held, what took place at our last meeting, events going on in our district, well just to many to name. The thing I wanted to do with building this site is to make available everything that goes on. Today it has seemed to me that some Boards doesn’t like to communicate with the town or city folks, for us here in the Loring District I am trying to change all that. I would like us to be a family in other words. No hidden agenda, just straight to the point happenings. Can it be done? Well time will tell I suppose. I plan on one more year as things like this takes a bit of time. Once done I will move on and let others take the reigns. Be interesting to see if it is kept the same.
On another note this year our Corn Fest at White Birches Resort has been canceled this year due to some changes that is happening with the resort, but not to despair, as next year it will be back better than ever. Where and when I will let you know in 2011.
I would also like to let you know of a new event that is going to be happening here in Port Loring. Come October 9 & 10th 2010 at our Community Center in Arnstein right off HWY 522 which is a Saturday & Sunday we will be holding a first time ever Oktoberfest. Going to be a great two days filled with all kinds of things. A few would be continuous playing bands for both days, On going food and beverages being made available for folks, horse shoe tournaments and for those that like a wee snort once in awhile there will also be a beer gardens, beer and coolers only. As I say just for those that like a touch now and then.
Sunday morning from 9:00 am to 12:00 am there will be a German Style Breakfast for those that don’t feel up to cooking breakfast at a cost of $5.00 per person. I should mention the admission price too which will be $10.00 per person for both days, can’t beat that huh? Coupon books can be found at any of the Information Centers in North Bay, Sudbury, Perry Sound, Gravenhurst and South River.
So there you go, a lot of old time items, places and things being closed up sold or what ever, but here in Port Loring there is new things on the horizon. Kind of makes me feel good all over when things like this happen. The only way that events like these can be kept going though folks, solely depends on you. You are the ones that will have the final say of whether they keep it going or not. Hope to see you all there!!! For more information call 757-2380.

Little Humor For A Cool Rainy Holiday Weekend
Newfoundland declares war on the U.S.A.
President Barack Obama was in the Oval Office when his telephone rang.
“Hallo, President Obama ” a heavily accented voice said. “This is Archie, up ere at the Harp Seal Pub in Badger’s Cove , Newfoundland , Canada , he? I am callin’ to tells ya dat we are officially declaring war on ya!”
“Well Archie,” Barack replied, “This is indeed important news !
How big is your army ?”
“Right now,” said Archie, after a moments calculation “there is myself, me cousin Harold , me next-door-neighbor Mick, and the whole dart team from the pub. That makes eight!”
Barack paused. “I must tell you Archie that I have one million men in my army waiting to move on my command.”
“Wow,” said Archie. “I’ll have at call ya back!”
Sure enough, the next day, Archie called again. ” Mr. Obama , the war is still on! We have managed to acquire some infantry equipment!”
“And what equipment would that be Archie?” Barack asked.
“Well sir, we have two combines, a bulldozer, and Harry ‘s farm tractor.”
President Obama sighed. “I must tell you Archie, that I have 16,000 tanks and 14,000 armored personnel carriers. Also I’ve increased my army to one and a half million since we last spoke.”
“Lord above”, said Archie, “I’ll be getting back to ya.”
Sure enough, Archie rang again the next day.. ” President Obama , the war is still on! We have managed to git ourselves airborne! We up an’ modified Harrigan’s ultra-light wit a couple of shotguns in the cockpit, and four boys from the Legion have joined us as well!”
Barack was silent for a minute then cleared his throat. “I must tell you Archie that I have 10,000 bombers and 20,000 fighter planes. My military complex is surrounded by laser-guided, surface-to-air missile sites. And since we last spoke, I’ve increased my army to TWO MILLION!”
“Jumpins,” said Archie, “l’ll have at call youse back.”
Sure enough, Archie called again the next day. ” President Obama ! I am sorry to have to tell you dat we have had to call off dis ‘ere war.”
“I’m sorry to hear that” said Barack . “Why the sudden change of heart?”
Well, sir,” said Archie, “we’ve all sat ourselves down and had a long chat over a bunch of pints, and come to realize dat dere’s no way we can feed two million prisoners..”
Three Items I Recommend For Folks To Eat.
What are three amazing foods we should be eating more of-and why?
I like blueberries, wild salmon, and grass-fed beef. Blueberries, for all the reasons you’ve heard before. Wild (not farmed) salmon, for its omega-3s, the antioxidant astaxathin (which gives it that pink color), and the protein. And grass-fed beef because it has none of the problems associated with commercial supermarket meat-no antibiotics, steroids, hormones and other potential carcinogens-along with a higher omega-3 content, some CLA, and it’s humanely raised on top of it. Cholesterol And My Opinion
Top health mistake people tend to make?
Believing high cholesterol causes heart disease. Fully half of the people who have heart attacks have normal cholesterol. And fully half of the people with “elevated” cholesterol have no cardiovascular disease. In my book that makes cholesterol a pretty lousy predictor for heart disease, even though lowering it produces 20 billion in revenue for the makers of Lipitor and Zocor combined. Not to mention of what these drugs to your body. My Opinion Only.
Good O Farm Poem That Brings Back Memories
The 30-some years of milking cows
Are drawing to an end
With many mixed emotions
Parting with these old friends.
The milk checks kept us going
They certainly paid the way
But with machinery wearing out
There’s breakdowns every day.
One learns a whole new vocabulary
When one milks cows twice a day
‘Cause when they kick you more than once
I swear you’ll make them pay.
No more feed bills for these critters
No more cleaning supplies to buy
A whole new lifestyle awaits us
This change won’t make me cry.
Wintertime brought frozen pipes
Ice and snow brought pain
Summertime, we fought the flies
With ankle-deep mud from all the rain.
If ever I get melancholy
I’ll think about the worst
Then I’ll check my finances
With very little in my purse.
Farming’s been a good life
But it will be a great relief
Not having to milk those doggone cows
Seven days a week!
