Thoughts from the Back 40 on June 14/2024

“Howdy & Good Morning to Ya! They say the early bird gets the worm, but at my age, I’m more interested in the coffee. Let’s start this day right!”

It’s one nice lookin’ day here in cottage country. The sun is shining, with just a couple of fluffy clouds drifting lazily across the sky. It’s a perfect day for relaxing on your front porch, working in the garden, or maybe throwing a line in the water to catch your supper. However you choose to spend it, today is shaping up to be a beautiful one.

On another note, yesterday, my wife and I managed to get the grass cut in the afternoon. It was quite a challenge with the heat, but we got it done, and I must say, it sure is looking nice. I can’t begin to tell you how well our vegetable garden is growing; truth be told, it has never looked this good. And with that nice rain we had, the lettuce and spinach have grown a good four inches or so. That means… we’ll be having our first lettuce salad from our garden tonight with supper. Now, what could be better than that?

Today, I’m planning to put in that row of winter potatoes so come fall, we won’t have to be running to the store. The potatoes in the grocery stores these days are getting worse and worse—soft, sprouting eyes, and sometimes even rotten ones in the bag. It’s a sad state of affairs, considering we live in a country that once had some of the greatest farmland in the world.

Nowadays, though, a lot of that good land is being covered with houses. Our powers that be keep saying we need more homes for immigrants. Now, don’t get me wrong, there’s a need for new homes, but it shouldn’t be at the taxpayers’ expense. If someone wants to buy a new home, the cost should fall on them, not the rest of us.

And while I’m on the subject, there’s plenty of land out there that’s not so great for growing fruits and vegetables. That’s where homes should be built, not on our prime farmland. I also believe that too much immigration isn’t good for us either. From what I’ve seen and learned over the years, we’re going to pay the piper for it here in Canada if we don’t bring it under control.

The bottom line is, immigration as it stands now isn’t about what’s good for our country; it’s about votes. That’s my feeling on the subject. Hmm, how did I get onto that? Sheesh! Anyway, on to other things.

Highway 522 is bustling with more traffic every day now, as campers and tourists flock into our area. Many of them have been stopping by to visit our gift shop and take a look around our property, curious about how we keep it so beautiful. It seems folks always leave here with a smile and a bit of that peace we’ve worked hard to cultivate over the years. It’s mighty rewarding to see.

With that… I am off for my breakfast that my lovely wife has prepared for me and will then head on out to our front porch and take in our beautiful piece of paradise.

Fishing Tip Of The Day: Being that it is going to get hot for the next few days, you have to remember that hot days can slow down the fishin’. Keep your bait cool by storin’ it in a shaded spot or usin’ a cooler with ice packs. Fresh bait makes all the difference.

Morning Thoughts from the Countryside on June 13/2024

“Good morning’, the rooster’s callin’. And as I have always said: A day well begun is half done.”

Looking outside this morning, we are seeing some rain, accompanied by the sound of thunder. It appears the rain will continue for a couple of hours and should stop around 9:00 or 10:00 AM. If we’re lucky, we might even see some sunshine afterward. However, the rain is expected to return later this afternoon.

Being Thursday it’s our mowing day, but as last week, it might have to wait for a couple of hours before we can get to it. Not much we can do about that. On the bright side, the grass isn’t growing as quickly, making the task a bit easier for us two old timers.

On another note, yesterday, my wife and I spent the entire day working around our property. We got so much done, I can’t even remember everything we tackled. There’s always something to keep us busy when you own your own home. But you know, it’s satisfying to own our place outright these days. Some folks say to me, “George, it must be nice not having a mortgage and living where you do.” I tell them, “Well, you’re not wrong, but it took a whole lot of hard work and time to get here.” Seems like nowadays, some folks want everything right away without putting in the sweat and time like we had to do. Now I said some folks. Sheesh. Back in my day, you could speak your mind without tiptoeing around everyone’s feelings. Nowadays, mentioning a few folks and suddenly you’re on trial! Can’t offend this, can’t ruffle that—it’s like navigating a social minefield with a blindfold on!

Highway 522 was on the slow side yesterday traffic wise, but being that the weekend is closing in on us, it will pick up a bit.

Bug Report: Black Flies are all but gone now, mosquitoes are out there but not so bad in the sun. Actually, yesterday I never noticed any while working outdoors with my lovely wife.

With that, I am off for a bowl of cereal, and we will then have to see what this weather is going to do. If it keeps on raining I will write up a story or two for my columns, I like to have a few in reserve. If the rain stops, we will get to mowing.

You all have a great day, and I will leave you this morning with this: “Keep your boots dry and your heart light.”

Living Quietly in the Countryside on June 12/2024

Good Morning! Living this long, one thing that I am certain of, and that is the best things in life are the simple mornings like this.

Waking up in cottage country, it’s a bit cloudy, but the sun will break through soon. This is good news because I have some weeds to take care of in our vegetable garden. Some folks dislike weeds, but I see them as an asset. When they first appear, I cut them off and let them lie around our plants. This creates a fantastic fertilizer, rich in nutrients that our plants love and need. Many people spend a lot of money on store-bought fertilizer, but the truth is, if you look closely, everything you need to grow delicious veggies is usually right in front of you.

Yesterday, I spent the whole day tinkering on a new creation for our fishpond, and I must say, it turned out right nice. Now, my wife is busy making a fine sign to hang from it, explaining what it is and putting the finishing touch on the project. We’ve always been a good team, her and me, and we always will be. Funny how some couples do everything apart; I reckon that’s why a lot of marriages don’t last. For us, what’s mine is hers and what’s hers is mine. We also share all our thoughts, good or bad. That kind of mutual support and collaboration keeps our bond strong and makes all our projects that much more satisfying.

Highway 522 did pick up a wee bit yesterday traffic wise, and if the past tells a story it should continue.

Bug Report: Actually yesterday, other than a few pesky mosquitoes annoying us while had our coffee in the shade, things were pretty good.

With that I am off for my breakfast that my lovely wife is making for me, and will then head on outside and take care of them weeds in our vegetable garden, and if time, I will plant a row of late potatoes for winter. I sure do love my potatoes, gravy, and… horseradish, let me tell ya. And you thought it was just gravy and potatoes, didn’t ya? Nope! It’s the horseradish that gives it that extra kick. It’s like a square dance in my mouth, and the horseradish is the caller, keeping everyone on their toes!

You all have a great day, and I will leave you this morning with this: “Sometimes you have to let go of the old to make way for the new – even if it’s just an old pair of boots.”

Daybreak in the Country on June 11/2024

Good Morning! Life’s short, but mornings like this make it all worthwhile. Enjoy the little things today.

It looks like a beautiful day is unfolding here in Northern Ontario. The sun is shining brightly in a cloudless sky. Earlier, as I took a walk around our property, I noticed our yellow lilies in full bloom. They looked so stunning that I had to pause for a few minutes to fully appreciate their beauty. I can’t seem to get enough of what nature has to offer; it feels like an addiction I simply can’t resist.

However, the temperature did drop quite low overnight, hovering just above the frost line. I was a bit worried there for a while, but everything turned out okay. You never know what Mother Nature has in store, and like all women, she can be quite unpredictable.

Highway 522 isn’t too busy these days, but activity is picking up with many campers and trailers moving into our area for the summer. It’s kind of nice to see new faces and the area bustling a bit. However, as much as I enjoy the influx of visitors, I hope our community doesn’t grow too fast and that we can maintain the solitude we enjoy. It’s a delicate balance, welcoming tourists while preserving the tranquility we love.

On another note, being so cool and gloomy yesterday, I made the best of it by working here in my computer writing up a few stories for my newspaper columns. Worked out pretty good with three new ones ready to go.

Today though, being the sun is upon us looking and feeling good, I am planning on doing some staining on part of my woodworking shop. After that I have some welding to do on a project my wife and I are creating, and after that… well I am thinking a drink and some front porch sittin’ will be in order for the remainder of the day.

Bug Report: Black Flies are pretty well gone, but the mosquitoes are out in full force, but with the sun out and the dragon flies roaming around looking for a meal, it shouldn’t be all that bad.

With that I am off for my morning bowl of cereal that my lovely wife has made for me, and will then have a cup of hot cocoa and head on out to my woodworking shop. I also think I will have to wake up my hoe, as the weeds in our vegetable garden are starting to show themselves.

You all have a great day, and I will leave you with this: “Trouble is like rain; it’s bound to come, but it’ll pass. It always does.”

Country Life at First Light on June 10/2024

Good Morning! Living where we do, I found that the land away from the cities for some whisper old stories. So why not take a walk and let them fill your mind of what’s to come, and what has taken place years ago. Never fear the past or the future, as they are merely chapters in the book of your life… each holding lessons that shape your journey and lead you to your true self.

It is a bit cloudy here waking up in cottage country, but that being said the sun will eventually make her appearance, oh…. I would say around 9:00 or 10:00 AM, and it should remain with us for the remainder of the week, and along with that it will warm up starting tomorrow.

Here we are, starting the second week in June, and we had to turn on our oil furnace just to take the edge off the cold and damp this morning. So much for global warming? Now, don’t get me wrong… I’m all for doing our part to help the planet. But let’s take a closer look. Here in Canada, our efforts are just a drop in the bucket. What we are doing to help the environment hardly makes a dent… it’s like a drop of water on a pin. Now the larger countries are the real culprits these days, and until they step up, well… things won’t get better.

But it’s not just humans causing havoc on our world. Not by a long shot. There are natural factors at play too, like volcanoes and forest fires, among many others. And let’s not forget, at least in my mind, that the Arctic used to be warm years ago. So, I think a lot of what’s happening today, might just be a natural occurrence. But hey, to each their own on what they believe, as I’ve always said.

On another note, my wife and I took a trip to North Bay yesterday to pick up my laptop. Our son Karl installed a new hard drive because the old one had given up the ghost. It seems that companies today use the cheapest parts they can find, which in turn don’t last long, which is exactly how they want it, so they can make more money. And, of course, we consumers end up paying the price. While there we took him out to Casey’s for lunch, had a nice chat, picked up a few groceries and things, picked up a coffee for the road, and headed on home enjoying each other’s company and taking in nature that was all around us. All in all, a good day.

Today I am going to do some work here at my computer setting things back to how I had them, and if time maybe being a bit cool outside, I will write up a story or two for my newspaper columns.

Highway 522 is still pretty quiet, not too many folks roaming around, but I suspect things will pick up as it always does come the end of the month.

Bug Report: The ones now irritating folks are the mosquitoes, as they sure like this damp weather. Once the sun comes back out, things should get better. There are a few blackflies still around, but for most parts they have left for another year, which is fine with me.

With that I am off for my breakfast that my lovely wife has gotten ready for me, and will then enjoy the day as it should be.

You all have a great day and remember: A quiet morning with a hot cup of cocoa is worth more than a noisy day in the city.

Life Beyond the City Limits on June 7/2024

“Good morning! Being a farmer, I have learned that the farm teaches us that every problem has a solution – you just need to dig deep enough to find it.”

It’s a cloudy morning here in cottage country, and we are having some light rain off and on. The rain along with cooler temperatures will remain with us right up till Monday. After that… things are looking pretty good weather wise.

Bug Report: The black flies are still around, but they’re not too bad. Mosquitoes, on the other hand, are a nightmare. Those blood sucking parasites are out there like tiny vampires, ready to suck up every drop of blood they can find! Reminds me of… well, I won’t get into that this morning.

Highway 522 hasn’t been all that bad for the past few days, but that is to be expected with the not so good weather, along with the bugs. But things will pick up a bit when the kids are out of school for the summer.

On another note, yesterday my wife and I started mowing, but we had to stop because of the rain. Fortunately, we managed to finish up after lunch when it cleared up for a few hours, which was all we needed. I have to say, our property sure looks nice when it’s all manicured. No need for us to go to any resort or park, that’s for sure.

Moving along, our gift shop has seen a lot of new faces, with folks stopping by and picking up their favorite items. It’s been great to see so many people enjoying what we have to offer. The steady flow of customers has really brightened up the place, and it’s wonderful to see our shop buzzing with activity.

Today, I’m planning to tidy up my woodworking shop a bit. After that, I’ll get busy making some comfrey fertilizer and comfrey insecticide for our fruit trees. Over the years, I’ve replanted many comfrey plants, and now they’re growing all over our property. Comfrey is one of the most useful plants you can have, especially if you grow your own fruits and vegetables. Not to forget the health related benefits it offers.

With that, I’m off to enjoy the breakfast my lovely wife is making for me: a bacon and cheese toasted sandwich topped with some lettuce. I don’t have bacon very often, but every so often, I get the urge. Just the smell of the bacon cooking makes my mouth water. After that, a hot cup of cocoa will be in order and when finished, I will head on out to my woodworking shop.

You all have a great day, and I will leave you with this: “Sometimes the best therapy is a walk in the woods and a deep breath of fresh country air.” Which is something my wife and I have lots of here in the north.

Morning Thoughts from the Countryside on June 6/2024

Good Morning! “Remember, in life, you can’t harvest what you don’t plant. Let’s make sure we’re planting the right things today.”

It’s a bit cloudy here in cottage country this morning, but we are seeing some sunshine. We also had some much-needed rain, yesterday, which started late in the day and lasted for a few hours. It came down so hard it filled our rain barrels in about ten minutes. I am happy about that, as now we will have lots to last till our next rain. At least, I think we will, we will have to see, it all depends on how hot it gets. More heat, the more water we need.

On another note, my wife and I took a trip to visit an old friend of ours in Coldwater for a couple of days. It sure was nice to see her. After that we headed on over to Orillia to do some shopping and then moseyed on to Huntsville where we spent the night. Had a nice meal at Kelsey’s, enjoyed our room at the Best Western, had breakfast which was included with our night’s stay, and headed on home, taking in sights we haven’t seen in a while. All in all, we had a good trip, but as always, it is nice to be home. The more I see the hustle and bustle of city life, the more I love the peace and quiet of our northern country property. Living here in the countryside, I really hope it doesn’t get any busier than it already is. We moved here to enjoy the peace and solitude, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. It’s not that we don’t enjoy the company of others, but there’s something special about the quiet charm of this place that we’d like to preserve. Simple livin’ suits us just fine.

And then when we arrived home, I booted up my computer and found that the hard drive died, so we had to take it into North Bay for my son to fix. So that will take him a week or so, as he is very busy at work. Luckily, I have him to help me out, along with my old one to fall back on, which I am using now. Other than that, things are rolling along these days.

Highway 522 is picking up with traffic every day now, with more tourists and cottage owners closing in on us, and it will remain that way now for the next three months.

Bug Report; There are still a few black flies irritating folks, but for most parts the dragon flies have cleaned them up. We have lots of them flying around my shop and gardens, which is nice to see. Some even land on my old hat occasionally for a rest. The mosquitoes are out there in full force, but as with the black flies, the dragon flies are chowing down on them as well.

With that I’m off to enjoy my morning breakfast that my lovely wife has made for me, and then I’ll wake up our mowers since it’s mowing day for us, which will take up the morning. After that, I’ll tidy up my woodworking shop, and then if the sun is still shining, we’ll spend some time relaxing in our lawn chairs out front, taking in the sights of our new fishpond, and the water wheel I made a while back. There’s always something to appreciate living here, surrounded by nature.

You all have a great day and remember: “Life’s simple: work hard, treat folks right, and take time to watch the sunset.”

Mornings in the Countryside on June 1/2024

Good Morning! “There’s a whole lot to be thankful for today, so let’s get to it.”

It’s another beautiful morning here in Cottage country. The sun is doing its job and the temperature is sitting at a comfortable 16 C | 60.8 F. Pretty hard to beat that. Other than the trees, plants, wildflowers and grass being so green. I have to tell ya it sure is a sight to see, so nice I did a YouTube Video of our property yesterday, which I will post on my channel when I find some time. Which is scarce at the moment with all that my wife and I have on the go.

On another note, yesterday my wife and I managed to get our grape posts, anchors and wire strung, and once finished we planted our young grape vines into their new home. Waking up this morning they sure look like they’re happy, so in two to three years we will have enough grapes for making jams, jellies and maybe a bottle or two of homemade wine. I can’t wait.

Today, I am planning on installing some bearings I bought on Amazon, for my water wheel on our new fishpond, as the wheel wasn’t turning like I wanted it to. So if things goes to plan, I should have it up and running later on today sometime.

Grand Opening Today!

We are excited to announce the grand opening of our gift shop this morning! Inside, you’ll find a charming assortment of items, each one handcrafted by my wife and me right here at home.

With many years of experience in woodworking and my wife’s artistic touch, we take pride in offering unique, high-quality products that stand out from the rest.

Why visit our shop?

  • 100% Locally Made: Every item is created with skill and passion, ensuring exceptional quality and uniqueness.

In a world that’s constantly changing, it’s nice to find something genuine and made with pride. So if you have a few minutes to spare, why not come and discover the beauty of our handmade goods. We look forward to welcoming you!

Highway 522 is really picking up, traffic-wise. We’ve got boats, ATVs, you name it, all closing in on us. It’s a refreshing sight for a change, and folks seem to be eager to leave the hustle and bustle of city life behind.

Bug Report: For the past two days or so, the Black Flies haven’t been all that bad, which is sure nice to see. The mosquitoes are out there, but the dragon flies are cleaning them up, along with a helping hand from the birds. Mother nature is better than any bug spray. We just have to have patience.

With that I am off for my morning breakfast that my lovely wife has prepared for me and will then get to work on that water wheel.

You all have a great day, and I will leave you with this: “Fix the fence while the sun’s shining, not when the cows are out.”

Life Away from the City on May 31/2024

Good morning! There’s nothing like a piece of the country to start the day.

It’s another sunny morning here in cottage country, 7:00 AM, and the sun is well above the tree line, which means summer is almost here.

Lately, my wife and I have been very busy doing things outdoors. Like mowing the grass, planting fruit trees, small shrubs, plants… along with our vegetable garden. We did however have to cover some things up with the frost we had for the past two nights. I kind of think, we have seen the last of it now as tonight the temperature will be hovering around the 50F/10C mark. At least, I hope it does. But in saying all that, things are really growing. Our zucchini, peppers, cucumbers, lettuce and beans are above ground showing off. Which is sure nice to see, as my wife and I are sure looking forward to some fresh, out of the garden, pesticide free salads and things.

Today I am going to see about planting some grape vines. I wanted to do it yesterday, but we had too many other things on our plate, and never got around to planting them. Today, we will see.

Highway 22 is getting a touch busier every day, but not as busy as it has been in other years. But it will probably pick up more once the kids are out of school.

Bug Report: Actually, other than the mosquitoes, things haven’t been all that bad. The black flies are slowly leaving us thanks to the dragon flies. And I am hoping the frost we had keeps the mosquitoes at bay. Again, we will see how that pans out in the coming days.

With that I am off for my breakfast that my lovely wife has ready for me and will then head on outdoors.

You all have a great day, and I will leave you with this bit of wisdom I learned over the years: “Hard work never hurt nobody, but it sure makes the porch feel nice at the end of the day.”

Morning Thoughts from the Countryside on May 29/2024

“Good morning! The day’s young and the possibilities are endless!”

We are finally seeing a wee bit of sunshine for a change here in cottage country. After four days of light rain, it sure is nice to see. But we did need some rain, as there is nothing like a nice rain to get the tomato plants along with other veggies to growing. And I have to say they are growing. Our zucchini is up around an inch or so, along with the cucumbers, sunflowers and squash. Our apple, prune and pear trees are out in full leaf, and it won’t be long before we see some blossoms; our crab apple has already blossomed, and some small apples are beginning to show themselves. It’s an earlier variety.

Yesterday, in spite of the rain, I worked between the drops and tilled up a new spot where we are going to make a raised bed for a new addition to our land… “Asparagus.” We have some nice roots to put in the ground and once planted we should have a few to eat next spring, and for twenty years or so after that. It’s a very healthy plant to eat, especially if you grow it yourself without any pesticide and things. We never put any man made chemicals on our plants. And why should we? With nature all around us providing everything we need.

Today I will make the raised bed and get to planting them. After that we are going to put in some grape posts and string some wire, and once finished we will plant some grape vines that we bought a week or so ago. Once all said and done, I will put in some anchors at the end of each row, which will keep the wires nice and tight that will hold up the vines themselves. So, a full day of working outdoors is ahead for us two old timers. With the wisdom of age and the spirit of youth, remember, you’re only as old as you allow yourself to feel.

On another note, traffic on Highway 522 has city folks questioning their GPS directions more than ever these days Recalculating routes has become the unofficial motto of the summer, with the GPS voice sounding increasingly frustrated. Which is normal for our area. And if I might say is a good thing, as it brings folks back to what is important in life.

Bug Report: “Well, the black flies are easin’ off a bit, thanks to them dragonflies chompin’ ’em up. But now them mosquitoes are starting to throw a party, and guess who’s the main course?”

With that bit of info under your hat, I am off for a waffle with an egg on top, covered with some of Mike Clappertons Maple Syrup, that my lovely wife has prepared for me. Which should give us the energy to make it till dinner time.

You all have a great day, and I will leave you with this bit of wisdom I learned over the years: “The best lessons I’ve learned came from mistakes, along with a bit of dirt under my nails.”

Morning in the Countryside on May 26/2024

Good Morning! The day’s just getting started, and it’s already looking mighty fine.

However, it is a touch foggy in some areas, which should clear out when the sun manages to break through. Now in saying that it looks as if we are in for some more rain tomorrow and into Wednesday, but after that things start to warm up a bit, and we will be seeing a lot more sunshine. At the moment, you could say we are in transition stage from spring to summer. Which is normal for our area. But things were a touch dry, and I was hoping for some rain as we planted our vegetable gardens, and nothing could be better than a nice rain to get them settled into their new home. And I have to say they are doing quite well.

On another note, yesterday my wife and I made a trip to North Bay as we were in need of a few things. We ended picking up, more than we needed, had a pizza at East Side Mario’s, grabbed a coffee at a local shop, and then headed home feeling a bit poorer. Man, things are so expensive these days. And another thing we noticed is that people are in a real hurry. A few times, folks bumped into my shopping cart, telling me to get a move on. I’ve heard of road rage with folks getting upset, but now I see it has moved onto shopping cart rage. Who knew grocery shopping would become so extreme. But all in all, other than my wife getting her hair wet and looking like a shaggy dog, as it was raining and feeling a bit poorer, we had a great day.

Highway 522 we noticed was quite busy yesterday with a lot of campers trucks, boats and ATV’s coming into our area.

Wisdom I’ve learned growing up : Don’t let a small weed turn into a big one. Pull it out fast and keep your fields clear. It ain’t always easy, but it’s got to be done if you want a good harvest.

With that I am off for my morning breakfast that my lovely wife is making for me and I will then get to installing two new bearings to my water wheel that I made a month or so ago. Which should keep me busy for the morning, that is if the weather stays nice.

You all have a great day, and I will leave you with this: Life’s full of ups and downs, just like the seasons. You have to roll with it.

An Old Feller’s Morning on May 24/2024

Good Morning! Where the woods, the fields, the critters – they all got somethin’ to teach us, that is… if we just take the time to listen.

It‘s another beautiful day here in the north. The sun is shinning, the birds are enjoying their breakfast at our bird feeder, and our lilacs are showing off, like no get out. And being a white heirloom lilac, they smell absolutely delightful. I brought one into the house for my lovely wife, and it has filled our home with its wonderful fragrance. We don’t need any air fresheners. Actually, we never use them, and for those who don’t know, some products, like Febreze, can mask odors by dulling your sense of smell. Which isn’t a good thing.

On another note, yesterday, my wife and I managed to get the grass cut in the morning. I have to say, it sure looks nice around our property when everything’s all cleaned up. Even more so now, with all our perennials growing nicely. We’re sure lucky to have such a beautiful piece of land. In all my years, I’ve never seen another place so inviting. Well, there was one other, our cottage in Sarasota, Florida, back in the sixties. We sure do miss it. Looking back, if we knew then what we know now, we’d have never let it go.

Well, today my wife and I are planning to finish planting our vegetable gardens, which will likely take up the whole morning. After that, I reckon we’ll get cleaned up and open our gift shop for the season. We’ve got a lot of new products for folks to check out. Now, all our items are handcrafted right here at our home—none of that offshore stuff like you see in most gift shops. My wife and I have pretty much made everything ourselves, putting our heart and soul into each creation. It’s a real labor of love for us.

Highway 522 is still very busy, which will continue now for the remainder of the summer.

Bug Report: Actually, with the wind and cooler temperatures, the bugs haven’t been too much of a bother. The good news is that yesterday, my wife and I noticed the dragonflies have made their grand entrance. While we were mowing, they were flying all around us, gobbling up the bugs. A few even perched on my hat while I was on the riding mower—guess they were enjoying the ride! We sure do love seeing them every year.

Well… I reckon it’s time for my morning cereal, made by my little woman. . After that, we’ll sit on the porch with a hot cocoa and admire what we got done yesterday. Sets us up nice for the work we’ve got today. Ain’t nothing like living where we do

You all have a great day, make it a great day, and I will leave you all with this: “Life’s like farming: you reap what you sow, so plant good seeds.”

Morning Moments from the Country on May 23/2024

Good Morning: The best part of living out here away from the cities is the daily reminder that life’s richest when it’s simplest.

It’s another sunny morning here in the north and all that hoop haw yesterday, about heavy rain, hail and wind never took place, at least for us. However, it has cooled down some with the temperature climbing out of bed sitting at 15.4 C | 59.72 F. It will warm up a bit as the day moves forward, which is good as my wife and I have our mowing to do today, which should keep us busy for the morning. The weather should stay nice now for the next few days, at least that is what Mother Nature is predicting, so we will see.

On another note, my wife and I spent yesterday planting some of our vegetables in the garden. We also moved a few shrubs and other plants to spots where we think they will be happy. But sometimes, despite our best efforts, they don’t do well in the locations we choose, and when that happens, the only solution is to relocate them.

The Wisdom of Generations Past: I found that growing up in the country, means inheriting, learning a wealth of wisdom passed down from generation to generation. Whether it’s learning how to read the signs of an incoming storm or knowing which berries are safe to eat, being a country boy means carrying on the traditions of those who came before. Nowadays, there’s a lot of focus on spiritual beliefs and what comes after this life. But from my years of experience, true fulfillment comes from the here and now—learning from the past and applying that knowledge daily. The practical wisdom our ancestors left us, in my mind, holds more answers than any spiritual teachings. Of course that is just my opinion as always.

With that, I am off for my morning bowl of cereal that my lovely wife has prepared, and then I will see if that old Roper Mower of mine will start. It can be temperamental at times. Kind of like myself more often than not.

You all have a great day, and I will leave you this morning with this: “Old barns and some old folks got a lot of stories. It pays to listen to both.”

Thoughts from an Old Timer on May 22/2024

“Mornin’, folks. Another day to walk barefoot in the dew and feel the heartbeat of the earth under your feet.” They call it grounding, that has been lost over the years with the introduction of socks and shoes.

We are once again in the midst of some sunshine this morning. Yesterday morning and throughout the day we did have a few showers off and on, but nothing that raised the water level in my rain barrow. Actually, I added another rain barrow on the other side of our home yesterday, as I have a feeling our veggies will be in need of it later on. As a farmer, I’ve learned there’s nothing better for plants than a good, old-fashioned rain. You can irrigate all you like, but when the rain comes, the crops just flourish.

Yesterday I worked away trying to take the wheel off my rototiller, which didn’t happen, as it is ceased on there, like all get out. So I took the tire off, leaving the rim on the machine. It was a tubless tire, so I went online and ordered a tube from Amazon, which should arrive this week, and the best part is… it cost less than half as much as it would have cost me in the stores in North Bay. And on top of all that, I got two for the price of one, which in total cost me… $18.00 for both delivered right to my home. How can you beat that/ Well simply put… you can’t, especially living where we do.

Today I am planning on planting some lettuce and spinach, since I have my garden worked up nicely, as lettuce and spinach likes the cooler weather, and looking at things there isn’t any frost on the horizon. But even if we do get a touch on Thursday night, as that is when we will have a full moon, the seeds are underground which won’t hurt them a bit. The thing I learned over the years is you have to work alongside Mother Nature… not against it, as you will never win.

Highway 522 is still bustling with new folks roaming around, looking for things to do. It’s like a never-ending treasure hunt, except the treasure is a decent parking spot and the ‘X’ marks the spot where you might find cell service. Welcome to the country, where the GPS is more lost than you are!

Bug Report: The black flies and mosquitoes were awful yesterday for a lot of folks. They don’t bite me, but they sure do annoy me by flying around my face. Some ask, “George, how come they don’t bite you as much as most folks?” I say, “Well, truth be told, we have an understanding: I leave them alone, and they, well, sort of leave me alone. Either that, or they’ve finally realized that biting an old farmer like me is like choosing a dry, tough jerky over a fresh steak!”

With that I am off for my morning breakfast that my lovely wife has prepared, and then we both will head on out to our front porch and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa, taking in nature that surrounds us, and we have lots of it.

You have a great day, and I will leave you with this: “Good things take time – whether it’s crops growing or folks learning.”

Welcoming the Day in the Countryside on May 21/24

Good Morning! “Where the simplicity of life teaches us that happiness isn’t found in what we have, but in who we are.”

Not a bad morning here in the north. The temperature was sitting at 14.8 C | 58.64 F which is about right for this time of year. It will warm up a bit more as the day progresses. We also had a shower or… half a rain barrow full through the night, which worked out perfect, as it always does when my wife and I plant some trees and things. It’s always been that way. Seems Mother Nature is watching what we are doing.

Highway 522 was very busy over the weekend with lots of tourists visiting and driving through our area. Most of them don’t stay long, which ain’t surprising considering how far out we are. But I reckon that’s a bit of a blessing in disguise.

Yesterday, my wife and I kept busy working outside. We put up our American flag for our American friends along with our old Maple Leaf. Kind of nice seeing them blowing in the breeze throughout the summer months.

After that I tilled up our vegetable garden one more time adding a whole mess of grass cuttings beforehand, and then planted one row of potatoes along with some beans, cucumbers and zucchini. Today I am going to see about fixing a tire on my rototiller as it has been leaking slowly for the past ten years, but yesterday it wouldn’t hold air at all, so I will have to see how that works out as it isn’t going to be the easiest thing to change, as the rim rides on a spindle, and it is frozen solid on there with rust and won’t come off. I have been spraying it will WD 40 in hopes it loosens it for the past five years, but it still hasn’t moved. Anyway, I will have to do something, as it’s no good the way it is.

Bug Report: Truth told the Black Flies hasn’t been all that bad for the past two days which made it real nice for my wife and I, as we have or had a lot of outside work that needed doing. Still lots to do though, but in saying that we do enjoy working alongside nature. The Mosquitoes also weren’t all that bad, but there were a few irritating me inside my shop, as I had the doors open for most of the day. They like to get inside buildings as they know there is usually fresh blood around somewhere. Them blood sucking parasites!

Wisdom I have learned: “One thing I’ve learned over the years is that you can’t control everything. Sometimes you just gotta let go and trust that things will work out in the end. It’s like plantin’ seeds in the spring – you do your best, and then you let nature take its course.”

With that, I’m off to have breakfast that my lovely wife has prepared for me. Afterward, I’ll head out to my woodworking shop to fix the tire on my rototiller. It certainly has been a year full of repairs for it, that’s for sure.

You all have a great day, and I will leave you with this: “A rainy day ain’t so bad if you’ve got a good roof and a dry spot to sit. Preparation and a positive outlook make all the difference.”

Insights from a Country Sunrise on May 20/2024

Good Morning! Where the challenges of country living builds character, and the rewards are as sweet as homemade pie. Especially rhubarb, and this is the time of year for it.”

Here in Ontario! It’s Victoria Day—time to light up the BBQ, enjoy a drink or two with friends, and enjoy the long weekend! At least what’s left of it.

The good news is so far it’s been down right nice weather wise, and on top of that the Black Flies hasn’t been too bad. Which was fine with my lovely wife and I as we had a lot of outside work that needed doing. We still have more to do, like tilling up our vegetable garden, and then planting things we enjoy eating. Which we will do today, well some of it, like our potatoes and lettuce along with our zucchini, and cucumbers. Then later on in the week we will get to planting our tomatoes.

Yesterday my wife and I opened up our small cottage which is all set to go now for anyone that wants to rent it. We are going to take reservations now for June, July, August and September. It’s a nice clean cottage, comes with TV, Star Link Wi-Fi, Air Conditioning If Needed, along with everything you need to cook with like utensils, and a brand anew barbecue that sets along-side a checkerboard. Kind of nice to be able to cook your meal and enjoy a game of checkers while you’re waiting. The cottage is comfortable for two people, no pets, located right here on our property, walking distance to all the amenities. Anyone that is interested can get in touch with us at: [email protected]

Highway 522 has really gotten busy traffic wise, with trucks and cars towing boats and trailers, loaded up with things for camping or what ever. It will continue on like this now till fall.

Bug Report: The Blackflies have been bad, but with the wind we had yesterday it was actually quite pleasant out there. On the other end of the stick, them blood sucking parasites the mosquitoes are just starting, brought on by the warm weather. And it won’t be long before the deer flies makes their appearance. Those guys, once they find you, don’t leave you alone. They follow you everywhere, or until you send them to meet their maker. Which I do occasionally. But it’s all part of living here in the country.

Wisdom I learned over the years: “Life’s like a stubborn mule. Sometimes you have to coax it, sometimes you have to give it a nudge, and sometimes… you just need to sit back and let it be stubborn.”

With that, I am off for my morning bowl of cereal that my lovely wife has prepared for me, and then we will both head on out to our front porch, and take in our beautiful piece of property here in paradise, while enjoying a hot cup of cocoa with a marshmallow on top. Yea… I know life is sure rough.

You all have a great day and I will leave you all with this: “A good day’s work, a hot meal, and a drink or two with family or friends – that’s all a man/woman really needs.”

The Sound of an Owl In The Early Morning Hours

Years ago, when my friend Grey Wolf was alive, I heard an owl outside my bedroom window on the farm. And early this morning at 2:30 AM I heard the same sound once again. I remember asking him what he thought it meant.

He said: George, when you hear an owl hoot early in the morning, it’s more than just a bird making noise. For us old-timers, and especially for those who follow Native wisdom as I do, it’s a sign, full of deeper meaning.

Owls have always been symbols of wisdom and mystery. They seem to know things hidden from our eyes. Native traditions say that owls carry the spirit of wisdom and intuition. Hearing an owl in the early morning is like receiving a message from deep within yourself. It’s as if the owl is urging you to trust your gut feelings, especially when making important decisions.

Some believe that an owl hooting in the morning means it’s time for a fresh start. Maybe it’s telling you to let go of old habits and welcome new opportunities. It often signifies change and growth, hinting that you’re about to go through a personal transformation.

For those connected to the spiritual world, an owl’s call at dawn can be a comforting sign. In many Native American traditions, the owl is a messenger from the spirit world. This might mean that unseen forces are protecting you and guiding you. The owl’s call can be a reminder that your ancestors are watching over you, offering their wisdom and support.

When you hear an owl early in the morning, take a moment to pause and think. Native wisdom teaches us to be thankful for such messages. It’s a gentle reminder to listen to your inner wisdom and stay open to the guidance of the universe.

Remember, the owl’s call is a powerful symbol. It’s telling you to trust yourself, embrace change, and know that you are never alone. The next time you hear that hoot, let it remind you of these simple truths and the rich traditions that see the owl as a bridge between worlds.

You know… after Grey Wolf told me his thoughts, for most of my life I paid attention to feelings and things around me, and I have to say it has paid off. I am thinking early this morning, it was another gentle reminder, that maybe I should be paying more attention to what is going on around and within me, and to take more heed in my intuitions. As it seems strange that the sound of the night came to me at the same time as it did…. many years ago. GW

Country Living on May 16/2024

Good Morning! You know, over the years, I have found that life in the country teaches you to be self-reliant… to trust in your own two hands and the wisdom of those who came before you. It’s a lesson in resilience and resourcefulness, born from the necessity of making do with what you’ve got.

It’s another nice day here in cottage country, the sun is shinning from up above, the birds are enjoying their breakfast and the grass is still growing leaps and bounds… and along with all that the trees are starting to show off their new leaves. Pretty hard to beat that waking up in the morning.

Yesterday my wife worked steadily in her flower gardens with a bit of help from me off and on. For most parts she worked on her new herb garden which she situated right outside our front door. The reason for that is now when she is cooking meals and is in need of some fresh herbs, she can just walk out and take what she needs.

For myself, I worked away fixing up my rototiller and installed a new belt and after that I gave it a work-out tilling up our vegetable garden once again. I will do it one more time before planting.

Today however is mowing day for my wife and I and I have to say it sure has grown. I am thinking we will have a good pile of grass cuttings for our vegetables when all said and done. Which is good, as later on our plants will be needing some nourishment. After we finish, well… I am thinking some front porch sittin’ will be in order, taking in all our hard work, which in turn gives us a good feeling inside that we didn’t waste a day.

Bug Report: Lots of Black Flies annoying folks these days, and as I said yesterday the mosquitoes are just starting. Years ago, my old dad used to say: If you’re lucky enough to catch a breeze, embrace it like a long-lost friend. Bugs ain’t too keen on flying against the wind, so position yourself strategically and let nature do the work for ya. That’s what my wife and I will be doing this morning, that is if there is a wind, right now it’s pretty quiet out there.

Highway Report: Highway 522 is picking up more every day with new folks roaming around looking for things to do. Which is normal for this time of year.

With that I am off once again for my breakfast that my lovely wife is making for me, and after that we will head on outside and wake up our lawn mowers.

You all have a great day, and I will leave you with this bit of wisdom I learned over the years: “Life’s like plowing a field. You hit rocks, you hit rough patches, but you keep on going ’cause you know there’s good ground ahead.”

Life Beyond the City Limits on May 15/2024

Good Morning! You know…. out here where my wife and I live in the country, you learn the value of solitude, of finding peace and quiet in a world that’s always buzzing with noise. It gives one a chance to listen to your own thoughts, to reconnect with yourself, and… to find what is needed in the stillness.

Highway 522 is picking up traffic wise every day. And it will continue for the remainder of the summer. Why do they come, some might ask? Well… truth told, most come for the sights and stay for the stories. ‘Just the way it is.

Bug Report: Lots of blackflies roaming around these days, which means it’s a good time to get some inside projects done up. The mosquitoes are just starting, and well… they will remain with us for most of the summer. Although if it gets real hot and dry it will keep them at bay.

Yesterday I brought out my old rototiller to work up our vegetable garden. It’s good to do that a week or so before planting, as it allows the soil to breath. But just before I tilled it up I spread some manure which consisted of old crass cuttings we gathered a couple of weeks ago. It will give the tomatoes and things some great taste, along with what they need to stay healthy. I just went over it one time, and I had some issues with the one bearing that drives the tiller itself, so… it took me the rest of the day to fix that. While it was all apart in my shop I went down to Mikes, and he ordered me a new belt, which will be in later on today. I figured that would be the next thing to go wrong, so I might as well change it while I am at it.

Today I have some other outside work to be done, along with cleaning up the mess I made in my shop yesterday, so I will get to that in a bit.

Wisdom I have learned over the years: “Life in the country teaches you patience. You can’t rush the crops, and you can’t rush the seasons. Everything happens in its own time, and, well… there’s a certain beauty in that.”

With that, I am off for some pancakes that my lovely wife is preparing for me, along with some Maple Syrup that Mike Clapperton gave me while ordering a new tiller belt yesterday. It was a gift, as Ruth, my lovely wife, painted the new picture that is on all his bottles and jugs that hold his Maple Syrup. Should be a tasty treat to start the day off.

You all have a great day, and I will leave you with this: “You know, living where we do, there’s something mighty therapeutic about working outdoors in the spring. Maybe it’s the fresh air, or maybe it’s just the satisfaction of knowing… you’re one step closer to earning that cold drink on the porch.”
