What’s Happening in Cottage Country on June 23/2023

Good Morning!

It’s another hazy morning, waking up in cottage country. Once the sun is out of bed, it will burn it off. It is also a bit cloudy, which will make the heat a bit more bearable. The good news is, we should be seeing some rain over the next three or four days. Which would be nice as things are very dry out there.

Bug Report: Other than some Deer Flies and a few Mosquitoes, things are pretty nice these days.

Yesterday, my wife and I got up early and got our mowing out of the way before the heat hit. Sure looks pretty now. I enjoy nothing more than looking around our property when things are all done up right. The good news is my old riding mower is working okay after I fixed it a bit. But with that, my weed eater is not running that good. So I am going to have to see if I can fix it. If not, I will drop it off at a repair shop in North Bay the next time we are in town. I can’t complain though, as most of my equipment is on the older side, something like myself. Ha ha.

Today I am going to work a bit in my shop on some projects I have on the go. After that, I will pick a spot in the shade and relax. Maybe a game of horse shoes or two with my wife.

With that I am off for a Bagel that my lovely wife is putting together for me and will then see what the day has in store, other than what I have planned.

Have a good day! GW

Good Morning!

It’s another hazy, lazy morning here, waking up in Cottage Country. The sun is slowly creeping over the horizon, and it won’t be long before it starts to show itself in earnest. It will also be another hot day, so hot my wife and I decided to get up earlier than we usually do and get our mowing out of the way.

Bug Report: Actually it is quite nice there at the moment other than a few deer flies.

Highway 522 is starting to get busy with tourists moving into our area.

On another note, I did do a wee bit of work outside yesterday as my wife did. Today as I said earlier is mowing day for us, so that will keep us busy for a spell. And the fellow that is fixing our eves is supposed to be here also. I will be happy when that is completed and out of the way.

With that, I am off for a bowl of cereal this morning and a piece of toast that my lovely wife is getting ready for me.

Have a good day and stay safe, or maybe I should say … stay cool. GW

What’s Happening In Cottage Country on June 21/2023

Good Morning!

It is a bit hazy this morning, but not caused by smoke. It’s a norm for this time of year, being the warm air meeting the cool morning air. Actually, I enjoy seeing the haze in the morning hours, especially rising up above the water. Takes me back to a time when I used to go fishing with my old dad many years ago. Amazing what can trigger the mind into remembering things. The temperature waking up was sitting at 16.3 C | 61.34 F. However, it will become quite warm as the day moves forward. The good news is the wind is coming in from the North East, which should bring a bit of coolness with it.

Highway 522 is still quiet, but it will pick up as we near July, as that is when most folks start taking their summer vacation.

Bug Report: My wife and I sat outside for a good portion of the day yesterday, and we didn’t see hardly any irritating critters. Other than a couple annoying deer flies, that I looked after with my old hat.

On another note, we did move a few plants that we wanted to relocate yesterday. The trick of moving things in the summer, is to make sure just before you put the plant in the ground, is to dump a pail of water in it before planting and filling it in around the plant. A pail then is like giving it ten pails a day later. After we finished that, we kind of took things easy for the rest of the day. Today … well, I will see how I am feeling. Being the age I am, and what has been happening lately, I never know. But I am moving, which is something to be grateful in itself.

With that, I am off for a bite to eat that my lovely wife is making for me.

Have a great day! GW

What’s Happening In Cottage Country on June 20/2023

Good Morning!

And once again it is a really nice morning, with the temperature sitting at 18.2 C | 64.76 F. It sure is nice for sleeping. It will warm up a lot more as the day moves forward, actually it will become quite warm later on this afternoon and into next week. Summer is here, that is for certain. Well, actually tomorrow. While some individuals prefer a precise and concrete approach, others, like myself, are content with approximations or general proximity. For instance, if we consider a future event, like tomorrow, individuals who prefer definitiveness may appreciate knowing specific details and exact timelines. On the other hand, individuals like me are more comfortable with a more flexible understanding of time and are satisfied with knowing that something will happen in the near future. To each their own, I always say.

Bug Report: Things once again are pretty good out there these days. The Black Flies have left us, the mosquitoes are around, but not annoying and the horse and deer flies are here but not too bad … yet. But that will change with the heat as they like the hot sunny weather. They are an annoying bunch of critters.

Highway 522 is still quiet, at least yesterday. I suspect with not being able to have camp fires at night has a wee bit to do with it, as folks go to the campgrounds to sit around a campfire enjoying a few cool ones, while swapping stories. Not much we can do about that, as just one spark can cause a lot of problems, especially right now with it being so dry and no rain in the forecast.

On another note, my wife and I worked outside yesterday for most of the day, well she did most of the work. I did what I could. We are still working on the eve of our home, replacing the old with the new. I suspect it will take another couple days to complete. My wife trimmed our Lilac Bush, as the time to trim it is when it is finished flowering. Big job, but she managed to get it all done, and it is looking good for another year.

Today, being that it is going to be a hot one, I am thinking we will find a spot in the shade and take it easy. We will see how that pans out. Now I am off for a bagel that my lovely wife is putting together for me. She looks after me. It’s been that way for over fifty some years, I wouldn’t have gotten this far without her.

Have a great day. GW

What’s Happening In Cottage Country on June 19/2023

Good Morning!

It’s another cool morning here, waking up in cottage country. And once again the sun is shinning. For our surrounding area, the smoke is no longer expected or has moved out of the area. But for us here in Port Loring, it hasn’t been bad at all so far this summer. Reason being the winds have been keeping it at bay. Other parts of Ontario haven’t been that lucky. The temperature has also been very nice for sleeping, and we have kept our window open every night. The temperature waking up was sitting at 10.9 C | 51.62 F. It will warm up as the day moves forward. The warmer temperatures will also remain with us for the week, and after that things will cool back down to where is more comfortable. But I am not complaining as it was a long cold winter.

Bug Report: It’s nice out there now, the Black Flies are all gone now as Father’s Day is behind us. Mother’s Day to Father’s Day is their duration. And the Mosquitoes and Horse Flies aren’t bad at all.

Highway 522 was quiet over the weekend, but it will pick up a bit more now being a week day.

It should also be noted that there isn’t any rain in the forecast for the next week or so, which means for those that have veggie gardens, we will have to do some watering. Which my wife and I will do this morning. You have to give to get.

On another note, the fellow we hired to fix our eves on the house has been steadily working away. It’s quite a job, but it’s coming along and looking good. At least so far. I think it should be finished by the middle of the week. After that, my wife and I are going to relax other than doing small odd jobs around the house and in our gardens. It’s time to sit outside and take in what nature has to offer. And let my body heal. I have been, but not enough.

With that I am off for a soft-boiled egg with a piece of toast that my lovely wife is preparing for me, and will then head on outside.

Have a great day. GW

Good Morning!

It’s another nice day here in Cottage Country. The sun is shinning once again with the temperature sitting at 10.9 C | 51.62 F. It will warm up a lot as the day moves forward, along with a lot of sunshine thrown in for good measure.

Highway 522 is quiet this morning, but it is Sunday where some are having a day off work, getting rested up a bit for the week ahead. And I can’t say I blame them. Things will pick up more tomorrow, being Monday.

Bug Report: Yesterday, my wife and I worked outside and didn’t see any bugs at all, other than a few bumblebees going about their daily chores. I kind of like watching them.

As I said, for most of the day I worked outside helping a chap that we hired to work on our facet boards on our home. It is a job that needed doing now for a long time. Once that is complete, our home will be like new. Actually, our home was built around 1926 and we are the second owners. Strange in some ways, as the first owners name was George Lee and my name is George Walters. I have to admit that George is a good name. Even if I do say so myself. Tiller and keeper of the land, it is said. At any rate, looking around at our home and property, we do have a lot in common. Old George Lee and me.

Today I will be doing the same, and in the afternoon my wife and I will do some front porch sittin’ soaking up some of the Vitamin D3, that the sun gives away so freely. It’s what we all are in need of, especially with what is going on in the world today. Along with taking the time to enjoy nature.

With that, I am off for a bowl of cereal that my lovely wife is making for me, and will then see what the day has in store. I never really know what is going to take place. I make plans, but I never plan the results.

Have a great day! Make it a great day! GW

Oh, and Happy Father’s Day to all you Father’s out there.

What’s Happening In Cottage Country on June 17/2023

Good Morning!

Well, it looks as if we are in for a real nice weekend here in Cottage Country. The sun is rising in the east ever so slowly, the birds are chirping, and the trees are showing off all their leaves, along with the grass. Our property is back to looking like a park. Sure is nice to look outside taking it all in. The temperature getting out of bed was sitting at 9.1 C | 48.38 F. It will warm up a lot as the day moves forward. Actually, it will get a lot warmer for the next week or so, along with lots of sunshine. Which will make it nice for those that enjoy the outdoors. Like myself, as, there is nothing I hate worse than being in the house throughout the summer months. Especially after being cooped up all winter.

Highway 522 is getting busier every day. And there are still a lot of new homes being built. There isn’t a day that goes by that we don’t see loads of lumber going past our home, along with a lot of new portable homes. Some of them are pretty nice. It’s amazing what they can do these days.

Bug Report: Other than some Mosquitoes and a few Deer Flies, things are pretty good these days. There are still a few lingering Black Flies, but they are pretty well out of the picture for another year. Which is fine with me.

On another note, my wife and I decided to go to town yesterday, North Bay. We had a good day, other than what it cost for groceries and things. But all in all it wasn’t too bad. While there, we went to the Dairy Queen by Canadian Tire and I had a Chocolate Milk Shake. I don’t think there is any around that can compare to theirs. I enjoy a few throughout the summer months. The only part of them I don’t like is the whipped cream, or what ever they put on top. So lately I tell them to make it without. Tastes a lot better that way. Once we picked up our things, we had lunch in our car people watching and then headed on home. Great day and it was good to get away. And it does take a day. We leave at around 8:00 AM and no matter what we do or where we go, we never get home till late in the afternoon.

With that I am off for a bagel for breakfast, my lovely wife picked up a few at the bakery while in town yesterday, which I enjoy in the mornings occasionally. I get tired of the same old thing every day. She spoils me. But I don’t mind.

Enjoy your day! GW

What’s Happening in Cottage Country on June 16/2023

Good Morning!

It’s a cloudy morning here in Cottage Country, but in saying that, things are about to warm up. And it will remain warm now for most of the summer. And on top of all that, we should be seeing a lot more sunshine, which is what us humans need to survive and stay healthy. There is nothing better a person can do than to get your vitamin D3 every day. Fifteen minutes is all you need to replenish your body.

Highway 522 is starting to get busy a bit more every day. We are also getting a lot of new folks dropping by our small store saying hello and picking up a few things. Makes our day seeing folks.

Bug Report: The Black Flies are pretty well gone now for the year, but the mosquitoes are out in full force. Once the sun gets to where it stays warm all day, it will get rid of a lot of them. They need damp, warm, shady places to survive. The Deer Flies aren’t all that bad yet, but they will be around for the remainder of the summer.

On another note, my wife and I did manage to get our grass cut yesterday, and after sitting down a few times I did get our weed eating done out front of our house along the boulevard. I can’t stand looking at it when it gets out of hand. It’s a job that a lot doesn’t do around these parts, but in reality it gives your home that finished look.

My old mower though is acting up, but I guess I can’t complain as it is an old Roper. It was here on the property when we bought the place 20 years ago, so I would say it has to be close to being 35–40 years old. I guess we are going to have to buy a new one. I was hoping we could hold off one more year, as putting the new roof on the house a couple of weeks ago set us back a bit. Unless someone out there has a good used one that runs good. You never know if you don’t ask. The price of a new John Deer is over $3000.00 now and that is for the small 110. Makes me shake my head, how they can justify that price. At any rate, there isn’t much one can do about it.

With that, I am off for a bagel that my lovely wife is making me, and will then see what the day has in store. I never know these days. It kind of depends on how my body feels.

Have a good day. Make it a good day. GW

What’s Happening in Cottage Country on June 15/2023

Good Morning!

It is a good morning, I kind of figure any morning is good when I can get out of bed and able to walk a bit. However, it is cloudy out there, waking up, and it does look like rain. But if things goes to plan we should see some sunshine later on in the day and then things start to get real nice for summer.

Bug Report: The Black Flies have all but gone, there are a few, but nothing like it was a week ago. As I have always said, you can expect Black Flies to be here between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Them bloodsucking parasites the Mosquitoes though are another story, as there are lots of them lingering around in the shade waiting for a tender morsel to feed on. But so far they haven’t been all that bad.

Highway 522 is busy with lots of construction going on, and I suspect it will be that way for most of the summer. With the price of lumber though I suspect it will make a dent in the old pocket book as it is with most things these days. Once they get them prices up using all kinds of excuses which amount to nothing, they keep them there. Oh, they might drop a few cents on certain things, just so you think they are trying to help, but in reality it is all a ploy just to keep some folks happy. They have been doing it for years, and I don’t suspect things will change much.

With that I am off for a bagel that my lovely wife is getting ready, and will then see if my old rider mower will start, and if so I will see if my old body is capable of doing some mowing. I never know these days. Anyway, you all have a great day. GW

What’s Happening In Cottage Country on June 14/2023

Good Morning!

And a good morning it is. The sun is shinning, the birds are waiting for me to put their breakfast out for them, and our plants in our veggie garden are growing leaps and bounds, after the rain we had. The grass is also starting to recover, and will be long enough to mow tomorrow. The temperature getting out of bed was sitting at 15.6 C | 60.08 F, not too bad, and it will warm up more as the day moves forward. Actually we will have some real nice weather, other than tomorrow being a touch cloudy and cool, but after that things are looking real nice.

Highway 522 has been slow for the past few days, but I suspect it will pick up nearing the weekend with tourists coming from all around. My wife and I have also noticed that a lot of new homes are being built in our area, as there has been a lot of trucks carrying lumber and rafters passing by our home. There has also been quite a few portable homes being brought in too. It’s a sign that people are still wanting to get away from the big cities. And I can’t say I blame them, being what is happening in our country these days. Get out while the getting is good is the old saying.

Bug Report: Other than mosquitoes and the odd deer fly, things are pretty good these days. The Black Flies are almost all gone now, which is fine with me, as when they are out and about, it makes it darn hard to get any outside work done. But as I always say, as much as I don’t like them, they do have a purpose in life.

You know, it sure is nice looking outside, especially in the mornings and evenings. Everything is nice and green along with the flowers showing off. Makes a person feel down right good about being alive. I sometimes think we humans take a lot for granted, not enjoying what is right in front of us. I used to be that way, being so busy and all, but the older I get, the more I enjoy stopping and taking in what Nature has to offer. Along with some front porch sittin’. And the thing is it’s free.

With that bit of info under your hat, that is if you wear a hat, I am off for some pancakes this morning that my lovely wife is making for me. Topped off with Mike Clappertons world renown Maple Syrup. You should give it a try and if you’re looking to purchase some, just drop by his shop here in town, as he always has some there that you can buy for a fair price. You will be glad you did!

Have a great day! GW

What’s Happening In Cottage Country On June 13/2023

Good Morning!

It’s a cloudy, cool morning here, waking up. The temperature getting out of bed was sitting at 11.4 C | 52.52 F. Once again we have our oil furnace working away warming things up. Kind of a weird spring. One week you could have the air conditioner on, the next week you have the furnace running.

However, we did have a real nice rain all day yesterday and through the night, and we could see some more today. I did just a few minutes ago see a glimmer of sunshine, but for most parts I think it will remain cloudy for most of the day. Tomorrow will be nicer.

The good news is, we did have some much-needed rain, and it was a soaking rain which all the plants, trees and things like. I think my tomato plants grew another three inches or so through the night.

Bug Report: With all the rain and cooler weather, the bugs have been kept at bay. We will see how that works out tomorrow when the warmer weather and sunshine returns.

On another note, I didn’t do all that much yesterday. I kind of put my feet up taking it easy, in hopes my old body heals a bit faster. Seems to be coming along a wee bit.

Today I am not sure what I will be doing, being that it is cool and damp outside, maybe I will write up a story or two for the businesses I write for. I will see. I have to be in the right frame of mind.

With that, I am off for a piece of toast that my lovely wife has gotten ready for me.

Have a good day and stay safe. GW

Open For the Season!

Located at 11588 Highway 522, Port Loring, Ontario, Canada.

Howdy, folks! ?

As the sun peeks over the horizon and the sweet scent of summer fills the air, we’re thrilled to announce that our humble gift shop here in Port Loring, Ontario is throwin’ open its doors once again for another season! It’s a time of renewal, a time to celebrate the craftsmanship and love that goes into every piece we create.

Y’see, we’ve been as busy as a beaver on a dam, handcraftin’ a whole slew of new goodies that’ll surely tickle your fancy. Our shelves are brimmin’ with one-of-a-kind creations made by none other than my talented wife and I.

But the true joy of this season lies not just in the display of our handmade items, but in the reunion of some mighty fine friends. The stories shared, the laughter, and the memories—we treasure each one.

And if you’re new around these parts, fret not, for our door swings wide to welcome you with open arms.

So, my friends, old and new, why not drop by and let your eyes wander, and your imagination soar as you discover the artistry and craftsmanship that lies within our small gift shop. Hell, there is even a story behind every piece, a tale of passion and dedication that we’re proud to share with y’all. We even have books that I have written to prove it.

Maybe we can have a game of checkers before you leave while sitting on our porch. As my old Dad used to say: “Playing checkers is like tendin’ to the fields—strategic moves and careful planning. Just like harvest time, it’s a test of wits and patience, where every move counts. Ain’t no rushin’ in checkers, just like there ain’t no rushin’ in farming. It’s a slow dance, but mighty satisfying when you see your pieces fall into place.”

Hope to see you all this summer!

What’s Happening In Cottage Country on June 12/2023

Good Morning!

It’s a cloudy morning here waking up, and along with that we are getting some much-needed rain. I think my tomatoes grew six inches overnight. You know you can water all you want, but nothing gets them plants to growing like Mother Natures rain water. I think she has a secret ingredient in it that she keeps to herself.

Highway 522 was very quiet over the weekend, but it will pick up as the week ahead improves weatherwise.

Bug Report: Other than the mosquitoes, things are pretty good these days, but there are still a few lingering Black Flies. By the end of the week, they should be all but gone. I should mention though that I have seen a few deer flies around. When them suckers find you, they won’t leave you alone. I have to wait till they land, and then I swat them with my old hat. Killed many a bug that hat. It’s kind of like the old six guns, that the folks wore many years ago.

On another note, my wife and I put together a new propane barbecue yesterday, well she did the most of it as I still can’t stand too long or bend over that much. Actually it went well considering all the pieces that had to be put together. Our old one we had for over 35 years. I kept repairing it till finally my wife said: “Throw the damn thing away, George, it can’t be fixed anymore.” Ha ha. So I did, but they sure don’t make them like they used to, that’s for sure.

Today, I am going to take it easy and rest some more. I might venture out to my shop a bit later and see if I can clean it up some. I have a chair out there that I can sit on if need be.

So with that I am off for a toasted cheese bagel that my lovely wife is preparing for me, and will then see what is in store. Have a great day! GW

What’s Happening In Cottage Country on June 11/2023

Good Morning!

Not too much sunshine here this morning, but we could see a wee bit later on. Along with that, there is a chance of a thunderstorm or some showers. We sure could use the rain, that’s for sure. But in saying that the dry weather has slowed down the grass from growing which eases off the mowing every week. The cool weather will stay with us up till Wednesday. Actually, being that the temperature outside was sitting at 12.7 C | 54.86 F this morning, I turned on our oil furnace for a bit to take the dampness and cold out of the house. The reason being the cold and dampness plays hell on my old legs and lower back. Joys of getting old, but not complaining as I am still able to get out of bed every morning.

Highway 522 is slowly getting busier every day and if we get the rain that we need the forest fires will ease off some which will allow folks from the cities to do more travelling.

Here in Port Loring, we’ve been mighty lucky to not have too much trouble with all that smoke the rest of the world’s been grappling with. It’s like the wind’s been pushin’ it away, swayin’ to the west and east of us for the most part. Now, down yonder in southern Ontario, in St. Catharines where my oldest boy hangs his hat, it’s a whole different story. He was just tellin’ me how their boy’s baseball game got called off on account of the thick smoke. Can’t rightly blame ’em, but there isn’t much you can do ’bout it, especially when it’s so dry and our Canadian land is mostly covered in trees.

But it’s all part of Mother Nature’s plan, her way of thinning out them forests and makin’ room for fresh growth. It’s just the way things go. Funny how some folks tend to point fingers at everything under the sun instead of acceptin’ the natural course of things, just like they do with most of what goes on around us.

Bug Report: Although they are less active now, the Black Flies are still around. But because there are so many mosquitoes around right now, they more than make up for it. They also like sneaking inside your house now that the weather has dropped off a bit. You know, they may have a function, but if there is one thing I believe we could do without in life, it is them.

Yesterday my lovely wife and I in the morning took a drive to Powassan to pick up a few groceries along with some fresh Ontario Grown Strawberries. And I have to say after having a bowl last night, they sure were tasty. When it comes to fruit and veggies, we make it a point to get our hands on them Canadian-grown items, especially when they’re in season. There isn’t a patch of land anywhere else on this here planet that churns out tastier fruits and veggies than what we got right here in our own backyard. No country can hold a candle to the flavours and freshness we find growin’ in these parts.

With that I am off for a fresh bagel and cheese and will then see what the day has in store.

Have a great day. GW

What’s Happening in Cottage Country On June 9/2023

Good Morning!

Well, we all woke up to a cloudy sky this morning, and we did have a sprinkle of rain through the night, or … early this morning. More is on the way for tomorrow and Monday. We sure need it. But you never know what nature has planned. Time will tell the truth of it. The temperature has dropped a lot, with it sitting at: 12.2 C | 53.96 F. It will warm up some as the day progresses, and if lucky we could see a bit of sunshine off and on.

Highway 522 has slowed down some, caused by the forest fires and the camp fire ban in and around our area. But with things being so dry, the ban was needed. But if we get the rain, I am sure they will reinstate it for nighttime burning. Again, we will have to see how things work out in the coming days.

Bug Report; The Black Flies aren’t all that bad these days, but the mosquitoes are really annoying now. Especially this morning with it being so damp. They love, damp, warm and shady areas. And of course they really like to get inside your home if they can. I always brush myself off before opening the door. I also spray a bit of insect killer around the outside of the door every day, which I found helps a lot.

On another note, I did do some work outside yesterday, but by noon I could hardly walk, so had to sit down for the rest of the day. I guess I am not ready to do too much yet. At any rate, there isn’t much I can do about it, other than take it easy till the old body heals itself. Which I am sure it will, given the right amount of time, and rest.

Today I will take it easy and stay inside, as the damp, cool weather makes the old bones feel not so good.
With that I am off for some Pancakes that my lovely wife is preparing for me along with some of Mike Clappertons world renown Maple Syrup. Sure is tasty.

Have a great day and stay safe, as there is a lot of sickness out there these days, colds, flu and things. GW

What’s Happening In Cottage Country on June 8. 2023

Good Morning!

It’s a cloudy morning here waking up, and the temperature has dropped a lot with it sitting at 13.4 C | 56.12 F. We could see a wee bit of sunshine, but for most parts the clouds will remain with us pretty well all day. Along with that, we will be in the midst of some smoke caused from the forest fires all around us. So far, the smoke hasn’t been all that bad where we live here in Port Loring Ontario. Kind of depends on which way the wind is blowing. At any rate, there isn’t much we can do about that, other than wear a mask or stay inside if it gets too bad. A good mask that is … like an N 95 made here in Canada, I wouldn’t trust the ones made offshore. But as I say so far it hasn’t been all that bad, and if we get the rain that is closing in on us, things will improve a lot, so lets hope. We could or should see some rain starting on the weekend and on into Monday. I hope so, as our vegetable gardens sure needs a good drink, as does the trees and other plants.

Highway 522 is busy with a lot of campers moving into our area. And it will remain that way throughout the next three months, unless them forest fires keep them at home. We will have to see how that pans out.

Bug Report: Actually the Black Flies, and Mosquitoes haven’t been all that bad for the past few days. Yesterday I sat outside, once again, for most of the day without hardly seeing a one. We will see how it is today, I will let you know after we mow our grass here this morning, Not that there is all that much to mow at the moment, but if we can and able, we like to keep it looking nice around our home.

With that, I am off for another bagel and cheese that my lovely wife is preparing for me, and will then see what my body is capable of doing. Take care and have a great day, make it a great day. My wife and I try hard every day to accomplish that. It’s not been easy for the past few weeks, but we make the best of it. We found you have to keep the mind thinking positive. There are ways of doing that that works quite well. GW

What’s Happening In Cottage Country on June 7/2023

Good Morning!

It’s a touch hazy here this morning, but the sun once again is beginning to burn it off. In saying that, the temperatures have dropped considerably, with it sitting this morning at 10.6 C | 51.08 F. It will warm up some as the day progresses. Highway 522 is busy, which is normal for this time of year. One reason it has gotten cooler is that the wind has shifted from the south to the North North West which is bringing in the cooler air from above us. It will get a bit warmer nearing the weekend.

Bug Report: Yesterday was a good day for us humans and critters, as the Black Flies and Mosquitoes weren’t all that bad. I sat outside most of the day without hardly seeing a one. Nice for a change.

On another note, my lovely wife and I have been steadily watering our veggie gardens as we haven’t had any rain here in our area for a few weeks now. And by the looks of things, there isn’t much if any in the forecast for the next week or so. We sure could use some, which would help with the forest fires that are all around, and north of us. We also managed to put a coat of wood preserver on our front deck yesterday, so that will be good now for a couple more years. My wife did the most of it. Today I will be taking it easy once again.

With that, I am off for a boiled egg with a piece of toast. That should look after my protein fix along with some extra Vitamin D, which is in the yokes. I don’t eat much of the white part. Have a great day. GW

Good Morning!

It looks as if another real nice day is shaping up for us here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. The sun is shinning, the Robbins are trying to build a nest under our front porch roof, and the trees and flowers are really showing off. But on the topic of the Robbins, they sure are determined to build that nest, as my wife has taken it down now three times. We would let them alone, but where they are wanting to build it isn’t the best place, as they would make a heck of a mess on our deck. So as much as we love them, we will have to take it down again this morning.

Highway 522 is busy this morning, and it will continue now for the remainder of the summer.

Bug Report: The Black Flies were out yesterday once again, but not as bad as they were a week ago. They are easing off a wee bit, as are the mosquitoes. But it is that time of year. On the subject of Black Flies and Mosquitoes, I hear that our scientists are saying that wearing bright green helps in steering them away, along with white. I suppose it couldn’t hurt to give it a try. For myself they don’t bother me all that much, they swarm around my head, face and neck, but they don’t bite. I keep on telling my lovely wife that we have an understanding, they leave me alone, and I leave them alone. Ha ha. One remedy I found that works pretty good is not to use any scented soap, perfume, underarm deodorant or things like that, as they draw them to ya in droves.

On another note, I did do some work yesterday, cutting down some weeds with my weed eater. I made out okay, but had to stop a few times and rest. Once done, I was finished for the day, having to sit down. As I said in other posts. I am slowly learning to take life a bit easier, but it is hard, being that I have worked hard all my life. But it is what it is. That front porch of mine is beginning to look better every day.

Today I am unsure what I will be doing. I have a mind to get out my roller and put a coat of wood preservetor on it. I never use stain or sealer on my decks or posts, as all that does is make the wood rot quicker. Wood Preserverter is the way to go. Actually, I bought a couple Gallons the other day. What we do is we buy one gallon of clear and one gallon of the normal brown that they are using now on most of all the decking and posts. I then mix them together, which lightens the brown up, which is the colour that we like. Looks rich and lasts a good two years or more. But, as I always say. To each their own.

With that I am off for a bagel this morning, a cheese bagel to be precise, topped with a bit of cream cheese. Have a good day. GW

Good Morning!

It’s another hazy day waking up, but as yesterday the sun is burning it off. The good news is the past couple days hasn’t been all that hot. Which is fine with me. Highway 522 is getting busier every day with a lot of folks moving around. It’s nice to see folks out and about.

Bug Report: Yesterday I sat outside most of the day enjoying the sunshine and found the Black Flies and Mosquitoes weren’t all that bad. There were a few, but not like they were a few days ago. My theory after all these years is that they stay with us from Mother’s Day to Father’s Day, which isn’t that far off. Only a couple of weeks away. But in saying that the heat also knocks them for a loop as does the birds and the dragon flies, which there are a lot of this year. Actually, I had a few land on my chair where I was sitting yesterday. We had a chat with me telling them they are doing a fine job. Ha ha. Anyway, they are nice to see.

On another note, I am going to see about moving around a bit more this morning, and see how that goes. My old body will soon tell me what I can and cannot do. Just bothers me to no end not being able to do what I want to do, but I have to say this. “I am learning my limits.”

With that, I am off for a bagel with some cream cheese that my lovely wife is preparing for me, and will then see what develops. Have a great day and enjoy the sunshine. GW

Good Morning!

It looks like another nice day is shaping up for us here in Port Loring. It is a touch hazy, but the sun is burning it off quite quickly. Today will be another warm one, but not as hot as it was. Starting Monday things will cool down a lot which will make working outside a lot nicer. Or just sitting on your front porch taking in some sunshine. Which truth be told, we all need.

Highway 522 is getting busier and busier every day. Lots of day trippers roaming around, along with a lot of motorcycles going by. Once the Black Flies leave for the year, it will make it a lot nicer, especially for the bikers. Mike at Mikes Marina here in town is steadily putting boats in the water for folks. Nice fellow and does good work if you’re in need of some repairs on your boat motors or? I also noticed that Home Hardware and Buchanan’s are getting busier these days, lots of lumber moving up and down the highway. Which will make them happy. There are also a lot of new families that have moved into our area, which I suspect are making changes and adding on to their homes. Along with that, there are a lot of new homes and out buildings like garages being built. Sign of progress, they say.

Bug Report: The Black Flies are slowing down being so hot, along with the Mosquitoes, but they will be back for a while yet. On the good side of the coin, the Dragon Flies have made their grand entrance that eats a lot of them. I sure like seeing them.

On another note, I am still unable to do much in the way of walking or work outside yet, but I am slowly getting better. Which makes me happy. You know a person doesn’t realize just how lucky they are, to be able to walk to the bathroom or across the living room. Today I will be taking it easy once again, but I do keep on moving a bit, as I feel it is important to keep the body parts moving.

With that I am off for a boiled egg and a piece of toast this morning and will then see what mischief I can get into, or so my lovely wife says.

Have a great day and enjoy the sunshine. GW
