Happenings At The Walters House

Well cool morning here this morning.  Down to around 54.  Old bones feel it too, so started a two stick fire to take the chill out.  Feels good too.  Vegetable garden is doing great this year even with the above normal temperatures when I was planting.  I like to ease my plants out into the garden so they get accustomed to the soil slowly.  But this year it got hot and stayed hot for a couple weeks.  One then has to just keep them watered and hilled up and problems are solved.  Road work here in Port Loring is going to schedule and should have our new highway all paved by the end of August.  Don’t really like all the construction, but one has to take a bit of not so good items to get to the good items.  Will look nice when all said and done and a heck of a lot smoooooooother.  Well you folks have a great day.  Raining here this morning as well as the cooler temperatures.  So think I will get my fishing gear all ready to go for the season.   Season now is open for pike and pickerel but I like to wait till them pesky black flies take to leaving.   Also Bass fishing will be opening the fourth Thursday of June, so lookin’ forward to that.  Talk Soon

What’s Happening To Our Farm Land Here In Canada

I spoke at the Horticultural meeting here in Port Loring last Thursday night on different topics. This Article here is a few topics that I touched on, and have tellin’ folks for years, it says what is exactly going on in Canada that few folks even consider a problem, but in reality it is a major problem.  Take a look.  It is a bit long but worth the read, that is if your interested in what is going on in our country and want to take a hand in saving it.

Buy Canadian!———{American!}

When the Canadian dollar was low in value, foreign companies bought up most of the businesses in Canada at garage sale prices.  Foreign owners have closed down the canning factories in Exeter (north of London, ON) and in the Niagara area. As a result the local farmers have no place to sell their produce or have it preserved.

In the soft fruit producing area of Niagara, farmers have ripped out their peach trees because other than road side stands who will buy their fruit? The big companies have already decided and publicly announced that it is cheaper to buy canned peaches from Greece, so that is what you will see in stores. The farm land is being sold to developers and turned into big house and condo developments.

The canning factory in Exeter was eventually taken over by a co-op of former employees and they will try to make a go of it but it sounds kind of shaky. The politicians stood by and did nothing.

Garlic is no longer produced in Canada because it comes from China at a price cheaper than the cost of production in Canada . That’s all you see in stores and there is no Canadian produced garlic to choose from even at a higher price. Maybe the high taxes in Canada have something to do with it.  A small but determined radical group trying to unionize farm labour didn’t help matters either.

Sure all these trade agreements bring us low cost material goods, but if everyone is out of a job who is going to buy these products?

Good luck trying to find 100% Canadian products in stores. The only way to find such a thing is to deal directly with the farmer and leave out the retailer.

“FOOD” for thought. More information on this subject…..

SOMEONE WAS BUYING FOOD THE OTHER DAY AT THE COUNTRY MARKET. ON THE LABEL OF SOME PRODUCTS IT SAID ‘FROM CHINA ‘.

FOR EXAMPLE THE “A FAMILY” BRAND OF THE MANDARIN ORANGES SAYS RIGHT ON THE CAN FROM CHINA. SHOCKED!!  SO FOR A FEW MORE CENTS BUY THE LIBERTY GOLD BRAND OR THE DOLE WHICH IS FROM CALIFORNIA .

Another example is in canned mushrooms. No-Name brand came From Indonesia .  Next to them were President Choice brand.  Produce of Canada !!  The P. C. Went into the grocery bag.

TAKES FOREVER JUST TO BUY FOOD AND DO LABEL READING !!

Are we Canadians  and  Americans as dumb as we appear

— Or — is it that we just do not think?

While the Chinese, knowingly and intentionally, export inferior and even toxic products and dangerous toys and goods to be sold in North American markets, the media wrings its hands and criticizes the Bush Administration (now Obama Administration) (and the Harper Government!) for perceived errors.

Yet 70% of North Americans believe that the trading privileges afforded to the Chinese should be suspended.

Well, duh… why do you need the government to suspend trading privileges?

SIMPLY DO IT YOURSELF, CANADA/AMERICA!!

Simply look on the bottom of every product you buy, and if it says ‘Made in China ‘ or ‘PRC’ (and that now includes  Hong Kong ) simply choose another product, or none at all. You will be amazed at how dependent you are on Chinese products, and you will be equally amazed at what you can do without.  Who needs plastic eggs to celebrate Easter? If you must have eggs, use real ones and benefit some North American farmer. Easter is just an example, the point is do not wait for the government to act. Just go ahead and assume control on your own.

THINK ABOUT THIS,  If 200 million North Americans refuse to buy just $20 each of Chinese goods, that’s a billion dollar trade imbalance resolved in our favour . . . Fast!!

The downside?  Some Canadian/American businesses will feel a temporary pinch from having foreign stockpiles of inventory.  Wahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

The solution?  Let’s give them fair warning and send our own message.  Most of the people who have been reading about this matter are planning on implementing this on June 4, and continue it until July 4.  That is only one month of trading losses, but it will hit the Chinese for 1/12th of the total, or 8%, of their North American exports. Then they will at least have to ask themselves if the benefits of their arrogance and lawlessness were worth it…

“Remember: June 4 to July 4 “

EVEN BETTER. . . START NOW!

Are You A True Canadian??

I like this one so figured would share.  Everyone needs  a chuckle once in awhile.

Here is what Jeff Foxworthy has to say about Canadians:

If your local Dairy Queen is closed from
September through May,
You may live in Canada.

If someone in a Home Depot store
Offers you assistance and they don’t work there,
You may live in Canada.

If you’ve worn shorts and a parka at the same time,
You may live in Canada.

If you’ve had a lengthy  telephone conversation
With someone who dialed a wrong number,
You may live in Canada.

If ‘Vacation’ means going anywhere
South of Detroit for the weekend,
You may live in Canada.

If you measure distance in hours,
You may live in Canada.

If you know several people
Who have hit a deer more than once,
You may live in Canada.

If you have switched from ‘heat’ to ‘A/C’
In the same day and back again,
You may live in Canada.

If you can drive 90 km/hr through 2 feet of snow
During a raging blizzard without flinching,
You may live in Canada.

If you install security lights on your house and garage,
But leave both unlocked,
You may live in  Canada.

If you carry jumper cables in your car
And your wife knows how to use them,
You may live in Canada.

If you design your kid’s Halloween costume
To fit over a snowsuit,
You may live in Canada.

If the speed limit on the highway is 80 km —
You’re going 95 and everybody is passing you,
You may live in Canada.

If driving is better in the winter
Because the potholes are filled with snow,
You may live in Canada.

If you know all 4 seasons:
Almost winter, winter, still winter,
and road construction,
You may live in Canada.

(this is my favourite, because how true)

If you have more  miles
On your snow blower than your car,
You may live in Canada.

If you  find -2 degrees ‘a little chilly’,
You may live in Canada.

Well I guess it is now law that all boaters must have an Operators Card to operate a boat, doesn’t matter what size neither.  I myself had to bite the bullet and take the test which I did and did quite well.  You will have to take the time and read the book and do a bit of studying for a few nights if you want to pass.  You will need around 75% to pass. There is 36 questions multiple choice.   Below is the link of the company I dealt with and found them to be very good.   Click Link Below which will take you directly to where you can take your Exam. Fire Precautions Here In The North

I am no fireman that’s for sure, but I do know when and when not to be doing any burnin, like brush piles and things like that.  Reason being this year more than other years, that it is exceptionally dry.  Wouldn’t take much to  start off a major fire here in the north.  So be careful and if you must light a fire make sure you take the pracautions necessary.  Below is a link to the Nugget News Paper in North Bay which sheds some more light on the subject.  Click link below.

Whats Going On In The Garden

Well vegetable garden is planted, one flat of tomatoes, Better Boy this year. Hope I am not disappointed as I usually put in Early Girl or Glamour.  So time will tell I suppose.  I also put in some bush peas, potaoes, cucumbers for pickling, broccoli, Brussel Sproutes, radishes, corn, cabbage, regular and red.  Total cabbage plants around ten or so, enough for us.  I also got herbs of all kinds a growing and if them pesky black flies let up some I might just get my corn seed in the ground.  Man they are bad out there this morning.  I was telling folks that they weren’t bad this year but, wrong………………………………  LOL Oh well such is that and they are the joys of living in the north.   One thing is they usually disappear as fast as they come.  From Mothers Day To Fathers Day is their days I always say.  Also very dry this year and it is a constant on going thing to keep the plants watered.  As it is the shock from transplanting is taking a toll on them.  Usually they are ok but this year it got so hot so quick, well it is hard on all the tender plants.  Should toughen up in the coming days, or I hope they do.  Oh and also put in some zucchini, around five or so plants.
