What’s happening? January 8/2022

Good Morning. Well it sure is a cold morning here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. The temperature waking up was sitting at -30.3 C | -22.54 F at 5:28 AM. For the first time in a long time, I left our car plugged in all night. It is good for minus -35 F, but I figured just in case. We didn’t have any snow overnight, which is a good thing, as it would be too cold to go out to clean things up. Highway 522 is bare and dry this morning, which will make travelling good, that is if you want to bear the cold. For my wife and I, we are going to stay inside where it is warm. We both aren’t feeling up to par yet since we had the Moderna booster shot for some reason. At any rate, not much we can do other than wait it out, I suppose. On another note, we are having a few Blue Jays and some Morning Doves visit our bird feeder these days. We usually have some Nuthatches and Chickadees, but haven’t seen too many. We haven’t seen many woodpeckers, neither. With that, I am off for a bowl of warm cereal and will then see what the day has in store. I am not sure what I will be doing today. See how I feel later on. Take care and stay safe. GW

Episode 88: A Place in Time

Episode 88: Good Morning! And welcome to my 88th episode. Man, time sure flies by these days. Here it is 2022. I hope everyone had a good Christmas, and didn’t over do it on New Years. My wife and made out okay, as our one son Karl came to visit, and stayed for a week. He is back to work now, and I have to say we miss him already. Joys of being a parent, I guess. Our other son Craig was in Alberta this Christmas visiting his fiancé’s family, but we did get together by phone, which was nice. Anyway, I hope you enjoy today’s podcast, it dwells on things that we all use daily, but seldom think about. Take care and stay safe.

What’s happening? January 6/2022

Good Morning! It’s a cool morning here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. The temperature waking up was sitting at -16.9 C | 1.58 F. On top of the cold, we also had around 8 inches of snow yesterday and overnight. We are still having flurries this morning. Highway 522 is totally snow covered with lots of icy sections throughout. So care will have to be taken if out and about. My lovely wife and I will be staying put. Once the snow stops, we will get at cleaning our driveway and decks. Yesterday, figuring we would be in for a lot of snow, I put my snowblower in where its warm. Now it will be all set to go. The warmth makes it easier to start and saves the motor. I also managed to write up another story yesterday and will probably work on another today. But in saying that, it is becoming challenging these days trying to figure out things to write about. As after 2000 stories or so, there isn’t much I haven’t written about. With that, I am off for a bagel this morning and will then see what mischief I can get into. That is what men are supposed to do. Right? Take care and stay safe. It’s not looking good out there these days, with this crazy virus.

What’s happening? January 5/2022

Good Morning! It’s a cloudy morning here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. We didn’t have any snow overnight, but we will have our share throughout the day, which could amount to around 4 inches or so. It is snowing now. Highway 522 is mostly snow covered and I suspect it will remain that way today and into tomorrow. Which will make travelling not so good. I would recommend staying home. And it might be a good thing with the way this virus is spreading. I see a lot of places are closing up for a spell once again, which in my mind is a good thing as we have to at the very least slow it down. If not, the consequences won’t be good. My wife and I have gone back to ordering things online like groceries. It is easy to do and saves us having to go into the stores. In some ways, I prefer doing it that way. Yesterday I worked away on a couple stories I had in mind for my newspaper columns and got them looked after. Today I will do much the same. I have been keeping my shop stove going so if the urge hits I have a cozy place to work. With that, I am off for a bowl of oatmeal this morning and will then see where the day takes me. Take care, stay safe and most importantly wear a good mask. GW

What’s happening? January 4/2022

Good Morning. It’s a cloudy morning here in Port Loring, Ontario. However, it has warmed up a lot, which is really nice. The temperature getting out of bed was sitting at -3.5 C | 25.7 F. It will remain there for most of the day. Late today and into tomorrow and Thursday, we could see another round of snow. Possibly 6 inches or so. Depends on which way it tracks. Highway 522 is bare and dry this morning, which will make travelling good for those having to go to town or ?? If you do go anywhere, I would suggest you take extra precautions with this virus being so infectious. Yesterday I worked on a story or two for my columns in the newspapers. Today I will do much the same. So that’s about it for today. Take care and stay safe. GW

Mentality of some People

Keeping schools open a ‘tough call’ as Omicron spreads across Ontario. To me, there is no question of what to do. The only thing we can do is close things down. I have to laugh as some of the questions that these so-called journalists asked Bob Ford today is simply dumb. Asking questions, like … how long will it be before Children will be back in school. I don’t know where their minds are, other than trying to make a name for themselves. As simply put, no one really knows. Wait and see is what I would tell them. My advice. Simply put. Close everything down. No, it won’t stop this virus, but it will give the hospitals, doctors and scientists time to deal with things. Yes, it will hurt a few businesses, but not as much as the virus will if we have no resources left to help the sick. Just look at the number of infections, it’s a no-brainer on what we should be doing. Stop thinking about money and do what’s right. That’s my rant for the day. Take care and stay safe.

What’s happening? January 3/2022

Good Morning! It’s a cloudy, cool morning here in Port Loring. The temperatures have risen through the night and now sitting at -16.4 C | 2.48 F. It did however go down below freezing early this morning. But no complaints coming from me so far this year, as I don’t care for the real cold much anymore. Highway 522 is bare and dry here in town, with a few icy sections in both directions outside of town. So care should be taken if you’re heading off to the big cities. On another note, my old woodworking shop has nicely warmed up now, so I might get to doing some work out there in the coming days. Today though I will be working away on some computer things that I started which will keep me busy for most of the day. My wife and I had our booster shot before Christmas, so that made us feel a bit down for a week or so. But things are pretty well back to normal now. Price a person pays to stay out of the hospital these days. I think, that the booster shot bothered us both a wee bit was because the first two, we had were Pfizer, and the booster shots were Moderna. We were hoping for the Pfizer, but the day we booked it for only had the Moderna. So after talking to our very good doctor friend, we went ahead and got it. At any rate it is done LOL. With that I am off for some waffles that my lovely wife is making me and will then get to work. Take care and stay safe. GW

WHat’s Happening? January 2/2022

Good Morning. Well …. it’s a cold morning here in Port Loring Ontario for a change. The temperature getting out of bed was sitting at -16.9 C | 1.58 F. It won’t warm up much more today. Highway 522 is bare and dry for most parts, but there are a few icy spots that could pose a problem if out and about, and you’re not being careful. Talking about the highway, I haven’t seen that many deer this year alongside the road, but that will change once things settle down a bit weather wise. We didn’t have any snow overnight, too cold. But we could see some snow mid-week as things will warm up a bit more than it is now. On another note, I lit my old woodworking shop stove this morning. I have a bunch of projects lined up to do and would like to get at them in the coming days. It takes a day or so to get everything warm in there. Reason being, there is a lot of steel, which takes time to warm. But once it gets warm, it holds the heat, and you don’t need much of a fire to keep things warm. I also have the wood furnace going here in the house, which is sure nice. Coming in from the cold, there is nothing better than wood heat to take the cold out of my old bones. Seems every year the cold gets to me a bit more. Sign of what’s to come, I suspect. Oh well, the best thing is to live each day for what it is, and not worry about what might happen tomorrow. With that, I am off for a boiled egg along with a half a bagel this morning, that my lovely wife is making me. I feel kind of hungry. Take care, this virus is sure ravaging us humans here in Ontario these days. Well over 17000 yesterday and 12 deaths. Closing in on a 100 a week, dying from it.

Schools

The Ontario government will stop collecting COVID-19 numbers from school boards and suspend reporting of new coronavirus infections among students and staff starting next week.

The only reason they are doing this, is that they don’t want people to know the mistake they are making, by allowing kids to go back to school. Makes me shake my head in wonder, how some politicians think they can fool us. But then again, they have been doing it for years. Will it change? Never, unfortunately.

What’s up? January 1/2022

Good Morning and Happy New Year to you all. Well, my wife and I made it through another year. Pretty lucky considering all that is going on in the world today. Although, thinking about things, not much has changed in our life over the past two years. If anything, we are busier than we have ever been. Which in part is a good thing, as it keeps the crazy thinking away. Yesterday our son went back home as he has to go back to work on Monday. We both hated to see him leave, as we aren’t sure when we will be seeing him again in person, as this new virus is sure getting a toe hold on us here in Ontario at the moment. Over 16000 yesterday. I suspect there will be a lot more now that Christmas is over. The results from all the parties and getting together isn’t in yet. But the good news on the subject is, that most of the ones that have had the vaccine, are recovering from it at home. I hope that trend stays with us. Yesterday we followed our son into town, said our goodbyes, had a few hugs, and then went and picked up some groceries. After that we ate in our car, taking in the city life and came on home. It was sure busy in town. Today we will be getting things back to normal. My lovely wife is thinking of taking down our Christmas Tree along with some decorations she put up earlier. Myself, I will light up the wood furnace and then get to working on a story or two for the papers I write for. In between things, I will bug my wife, LOL. That’s what husbands are supposed to do, right? Highway 522 is bare and dry for most parts, here in town. Outside of town it is ice covered in a lot of areas, so care should be taken. With that, I am off for a bowl of cereal and will then see what the day has in store other than what I have planned. You never know what a day might bring. That’s the interesting part … not knowing. Take care my friends and again … Happy New Year to ya all. GW

What’s happening? Dec. 30/2021

Good Morning! It’s a bit cloudy this morning, with the temperature getting out of bed sitting at -8 C | 17.6 F. Today we will see a wee bit of sunshine, but for most parts the clouds will remain with us for most of the day. But the good news is, it won’t be very cold. Which is okay with me, as we aren’t burning much wood … or oil. We have had our oil furnace going for a whole week, being as warm as it is. But then again, this house of ours is insulated good now, and it doesn’t take much heat to warm things up. Speaking of insulation. I believe that the houses today have been made too airtight. We all need fresh air, and stopping it from coming into the house isn’t healthy. Years ago, we always had a window cracked open, especially if someone got a bit sick. And for most parts, folks back when didn’t get sick that often. I was going to put in new windows in our home a few years ago, but after taking things into consideration, I decided against it. And now I am glad I did. As the ones we have now allows a touch of fresh air to seep in here and there that you don’t feel, and it’s healthy. Highway 522 is bare and dry this morning, but there are a few icy sections here and there. I haven’t seen too many deer alongside the highway, but that will change in the coming days now that hunting season is over. Yesterday, my son and I worked away on adding some more high-tech gadgets around the house here. It sure is nice having someone that knows all the in’s and outs when it comes to these things. Today we will do much the same. With that, I am off for a pancake with an egg on top, along with a strip or two of bacon. I don’t eat much of it, but since it is Christmas, what the heck, LOL Take care and stay safe. This new virus is getting much worse as each day passes. GW

Schools and Learning

What they are saying regarding children in schools.

“They’re an essential service. They’re essential to students and in order for children and youth to grow and develop, they need to be in school,” this woman says on Wednesday.

I don’t believe it for one minute. It’s my opinion that kids do not need to be in school to develop and grow. To me, that statement is a myth. I wouldn’t hesitate to say that the kids are probably learning more on the Internet than in schools these days. Furthermore, the virus is spreading fast among the younger ones, who in turn spread it to others. Makes me shake my head with their reasoning. And taking it one step further, I bet most of the kids today would rather stay at home.

What’s happening? Dec. 29/2021

Good Morning! Starting things off, it is a cool morning here in Port Loring, with the temperature getting out of bed sitting at -7.7 C | 18.14 F. It will warm up a bit as the day moves forward. We didn’t have any snow overnight, but we are having some sunshine at the moment, which makes it nice. We could however see a bit of snow late in the day and into tonight. Highway 522 is bare and dry this morning, which will make travelling good for those that are in need of a few groceries and things. I think my lovely wife and I are okay for a couple more weeks. We might however go for a drive one day, just to get out of the house. A person can get cabin fever sitting inside for too long. Myself, I like to breathe some different air and see different things now and then. On another note, my bird feeder has been seeing a few new attendants these days. Mostly Grosbeaks, Chickadees and Nut Hatches. Of course, the Blue Jays are there too, stealing all the food they can find. We did have a few Morning Doves visit us every day, but for some reason they haven’t been around lately. Maybe they moved down to where it is warmer for a spell. Hard to figure what Nature has in mind. Yesterday, my son and I worked on some computer things. He did a lot of work around the house, hooking up some electronics and things that I have wanted to be done for the past two years. There isn’t much he doesn’t know when it comes to these high-tech things. Today we will work on a few more things, enjoying each other’s company, as with this virus now spreading fast we aren’t sure when the next time we will be able to get together. So best we make the best of it while we can. With that, I am off for a bagel and a boiled egg, along with a cup of fresh perked coffee. Take care and stay safe. GW

What’s Happening Dec 28/2021

Good Morning! So, how you all doing this morning? I hope you all had a great Christmas. I know my wife and I did. Our son Karl came for a visit, and we have enjoyed seeing him, as we haven’t been together for over two years because of this virus. There was just the three of us this year, as my other son flew out west to Alberta to visit with his fiancé’s brother and parents. We missed him. But we understood. I hear though they are having some very unusual cold weather out there with the temperatures hitting the minus -51 C. It can stay out there. Us here in Port Loring have been lucky weather wise, so far this winter, as the temperatures have been quite nice, and along with that so far we haven’t seen much snow to speak of. Will it last? I suspect not, as I think things will change in the coming weeks. But even if it does, we are coming up to January. Then February and back into March. It will make for a short winter, no matter what way you look at it. Which is okay with me, as I enjoy the warm weather over the cold weather. It isn’t good for the snowmobiles, though, as there hasn’t really been enough snow for them to get going. On the hunting this year, there wasn’t too many that got any. At least from what I hear. I chalk it up to being too warm. Heck, some days throughout hunting season we saw 60 F/16C. More like summer, LOL. Highway 522 is bare and dry this morning. We did have a wee skiff of snow last night, hardly enough to cover the windshield on our sons SUV. Which is good, as I don’t have to clean the driveway. Today my wife, son and I will be taking it easy. Maybe watch some old movies that my wife and I took while in Florida in the 60s. With this virus, it will be about as close as we want to be to Florida at the moment. LOL. But I suspect things will change, as I believe … with this new variant Omicron, everyone will eventually get it, and if things goes to plan with it being a touch weaker in certain areas of the body, our bodies after it gets it, will become stronger and that will be the end of it. Especially for those that have had the vaccine. In other words, I think the virus outsmarted itself. At least for now. But we will see how my theory plays out in the coming days, weeks and months. I hope so. Our bodies are pretty amazing. But it is still no reason not to take the vaccine and get the booster shot. As it does need some help occasionally. With that, you all take care. GW

Episode 87: a Christmas Story

Episode 87: Hi Folks and Merry Christmas’ to you all! You know, it sure has been a couple hectic years, hasn’t it? With this virus and all. And with all that has taken place, I would suspect it will be hard for some to get into the Christmas Spirit of things. So knowing that, I decided to put together a podcast especially for those that feel a bit cheated for the past couple years, in hopes that if nothing else, it will show you that others over the years have gone through a lot too. Some, maybe more, than we are experiencing today. At any rate, I hope you enjoy: A Christmas Story. From Me to You!

Merry Christmas!

What’s happening? December 20/2021

Good Morning! It’s a cloudy morning here in Port Loring, Ontario, Canada. We haven’t had any snow for the past few days and the winds have died down. We have been without power for two and a half days. But things are back to normal now, which is a good thing with Christmas closing in on us. I am very happy that we fixed our house with a generator hook up years ago, as other than bringing out the generator, and flicking the switch, nothing much changed. Well, we did burn a few gallons of gasoline. LOL The past few days I have been working away in the house here on my computer, as my wood working shop was too dark to do much. I did keep the home fires going and helped our neighbour with her getting up in age. The thing that gets me is, that there aren’t many folks out there today that want to help us old seniors, and we have to fend for ourselves. No one calls, or even drops by to make sure you are okay. OH, one or two does like my wife and I, but that is about it. The only thing us older folks have going for us, is that a lot of us have gone through a lot of hard times through our life, and we usually can take care of ourselves, hardly ever asking for anything. But it would be nice to get a hello occasionally, when times are rough. LOL, Crazy world we live in these days. It isn’t like it used to be years ago, as almost everyone back then helped everyone. Most today grumble and complain wanting this and wanting that, never taking precautions or putting things away for a rainy day, relying on handouts from where ever they can get it. The one thing my lovely wife and I have done all through our life is making sure we have back-ups for most everything. In doing so, it has saved us many a time. Anyway, that is my rant for the day. Highway 522 is bare and dry so far this morning, so travelling should be good, for those having to go and pick up a few things for Christmas, but we could see an inch or so of snow as the day progresses. With that, I am off for a boiled egg this morning and a piece of Peameal bacon along with a slice of toast. Take care. This virus is getting out of hand at the moment. And don’t forget that you can get your booster shot as of today for almost anyone. We have our Pfizer booster shot booked and will get that done in a day or so. Again, stay safe, keep your distance, wash your hands vigilantly, and wear a good three layer mask.

Episode 86: Men of Yesteryear, Part Two

Episode 86: Hi Folks and welcome to my podcast. Today I will be telling the second of a two part story. The first one, Women of Yesteryear which came out just before this one, and this one being called Men of Yesteryear. As I stated in the last Podcast, both are true stories that were told to me many years ago. Both great stories that I am sure you will enjoy. So with that in mind, get yourself comfortable … and enjoy!

What’s happening? December 16/2021

Good Morning! It’s summer weather here in Port Loring, Ontario. The temperature was sitting at 11.9 C | 53.42 F. It will warm up even more as the day moves forward. But enjoy it, as tomorrow we are back into the deep freeze. And we could see some snow on Saturday. Highway 522 is bare and dry this morning. Which will make travelling good. We are also having some high winds this morning which is blowing things around. We could see winds today as high as 90 km/h. I did find my hat, which blew away in the last wind storm. Today I will leave it in the house and put another old one I have that sets better. LOL With that I am off for a bowl of cereal and will then get to washing our car. Might be the last chance I get before the real cold weather sets in. It is a mess at the moment. So that will keep me busy for a while. With that, take care and stay safe. GW

Schools of today

At least two GTA school boards are warning students to prepare for a lump of coal this Christmas.

The reason for this is, if this virus gets going, which it will, then the kids might have to work from home. So what’s wrong with that? It’s funny how things have changed over the years, as when I was young, an announcement like the one above, would have made me the happiest kid around. But setting that aside … I honestly believe that most kids would be happy to be working from home today. Sure, there are a few that wouldn’t, but most I think would.

Taking this school thing one step further. I think we all need to realize, that this learning from home will eventually be the norm for most all countries. It’s the sign of the future. You can grumble and complain all you want, but it won’t change one thing, not in the long haul. At the moment it is all about money and jobs. In all honesty, most jobs will still be there, even if we eliminate going to school, meaning buildings, as the kids will still need supervision in the beginning. Kids are smart today, in a lot of ways, and a lot of that smartness hasn’t arrived through the way of schools. They have learned most of what they know on their own … online, or as some call The INTERNET. Can you imagine how much money, the Powers That Be, will save … if they sold all that land, and didn’t have to maintain all them buildings? I guess the next question would be. When it happens, and it will … where, and what will they spend the working man or woman’s money on? That’s the big question. I personally have a few ideas where it could go, if they are interested. My Opinion Only.
