Good Old Fashioned Candy Apples

Well I gotta’ tell ya folks.  Candy apples  are my weakness.  Took a long time to come up with a good recipe so thought I would share. Only other tip other than the recipe is when it reaches 300 degrees on the candy thermometer, get to dunking your apples, and make sure you butter your cookie sheet that they will be sitting on.  What a great old way to enjoy Halloween and the kids love them.

Makes 4 good size apples.

2 Cups Of Sugar

  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup light or regular corn syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food colouring, (optional) Better than Food Colouring, Buy Bright Red Apples
  • 4 medium apples good size apples

Directions

  1. Line a cookie sheet with butter really good.  In a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine sugar, 3/4 cup water, corn syrup, and food coloring, if using. Bring to a boil over high heat; reduce heat to medium-high. Insert candy thermometer and continue to boil until temperature reaches  300 degrees  (hard crack stage) takes about 20 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, insert a wooden stick into the top of each apple, pushing about halfway through; set aside. When mixture reaches temperature, immediately remove from heat. Working quickly, dip apples in sugar mixture until completely coated and then move to  cookie sheet and let cool.  Now the best part comes into play.  A lot of slurping.

Soil In Your Gardens Need Help Too

Most folks up here in the north take all our leaves just for granted.  Myself I see them as a  benefit to my gardens.  Come fall when they start to drop, I gather up all I can, which is quite an amount to say the least.  I then rake them, carry them and wheel them to my garden and spread them all over the top.  Once done I then till them in a wee bit, just so that they don’t blow away with the winter winds. Come spring they will be then tilled in again and other than the looks of nice the black soil, you wouldn’t even know they were there. It’s a great economical way of building your gardens and  so easy to do.  You got to figure that every year your plants are taking a lot of that soil and using it to keep themselves alive.  If you don’t put back in what is used, well you won’t have a garden for very long.   The leaves I don’t use in my garden are, cedar, not really a leave, same as pine as I don’t use them either, but for leaves, not to be used, the main one would be black walnut.  Actually you don’t even want your garden to be near one.  Also oak isn’t the greatest either, but can be used if left off to one side of your garden rotting for a few years before using.  So there you go, you still got lots of time to make use of them leaves  so why not make some use of them.  Talk Soon.

Certain Times Of Year Certain Things Has To Be Done

Well back to some more rain here the past two days.  Also had some freezing stuff thrown in with it.  Nothing to make a fellow or gal worry though.  One thing at least we aren’t shovelling yet.

On another note this is the time of year to get down on your knees.  No………not to do any praying, as that never helped anyone that I know of in my day.  But……….. this is the time to get that garlic planted so you can be eating healthy come next June.  I put in around five, twenty foot rows this year, as my wife told me we needed more than I planted last year.   Thing is, one doesn’t need  much space when it comes to planting garlic.  I keep my rows around six  to ten inches apart and plant each clove another six to ten inches apart, which for around thirty years has worked well for me.   I like to put them under ground around an inch or so, which also I found is a good depth.  To finish them off I spread a few leaves over the top of them, straw or what ever is ok also.  I then mark my rows so I don’t get to tilling them up in the spring, and, well that’s about it.  I got to tell you, my wife and I sure love fresh home grown garlic.  Once you taste home grown garlic you will never go back to store bought stuff.  Should mention one more thing, the garlic that comes from China in 75% of the stores today, I won’t plant.  Reason being, it just doesn’t grow as nice.  The kind I like, has a bluish ting to it and usually sells by the pound.  So that’s that.  Now I hope you all get outside and put a few in the ground.  You will be glad you did I can guarantee that.  Oh and when down on your knees planting, take up a good handful of soil and let the fragrance of it entice you, as it is a long while till spring. Talk Soon.

Helpful Ways Of Preventing The Flu Or Colds

Lots of folks talk about preventing the flu with shots and things but no one talks what you can do if you decide not to get the shot.  Here is a few things that will work, you just have to put them into motion.  And Hey!  it’s not the end of the world, so get your minds onto positive thinking and enjoy life.  Take A Look.

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. “Hands-off-the-face” approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat or bathe). This one should be repeated as it is  very important.  My young ones are now over 20 some years of age and you will never see them touching their face with their hands.  Make it a habit.

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don’t trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don’t underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*
Myself I just warm up a cup of water, put in a teaspoon of salt and a pinch of baking soda.  Then just hold my nose in the cup holding one side shut and sniff up just enough so as I feel it in the back of my throat. Simple as that.

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

Great Day To Get Outside

Well it’s sure a beauty of a day here in Port Loring. Sun is shinning and no reason as far as I can see why anyone shouldn’t be outside getting some well needed sunshine.  The more you can get now, the least sickness will strike through them cold winter months.. Not so say though that you shouldn’t be out in the sunshine all you can in the winter too.  I feel if you got outside and rolled up your sleeves for a half an hour a day, you would see diseases drop by 30%.  Colds Flu’s would almost be extinct, and the way you feel about life would change greatly towards the good.  And so easy to do too.   Oh!  should say don’t be covering your skin with that all them lotions either, as if you do you  might as well stay in the house.  Your skin will toughen up to withstand anything the sun can throw at it given time.  Have a great day.

Port Loring Ontario, A Place To Raise Your Children, Start A Business, Or Just Settle Down.

You know for most my life I have lived in the country. Moving here to Port Loring, Ontario was just one more of our adventures in trying to keep  us alive and well. In Niagara where we farmed it has grown to enormous proportions and  you might say folks don’t have any elbow room any-more.  Here in Port Loring that problem is solved.   For those that want the simple life with a country backing, well this is the place for you.  We are a growing area. but still with in our growth rate to get bigger, without loosing what I call necessities in life.   Homes are readily available at a very reasonable price in and around our area, and lots of good land if you choose to build your dream home.   We are still an unorganized area, but don’t let that worry you, as through my eyes it is an advantage point, as there are a lot of things not in place to hamper a fellow or gal, when the urge strikes to doing certain things.  Also  remember this, being unorganized doesn’t mean we don’t have rules to follow, and that any one can do what ever they want, as it doesn’t. We have our own Board here called the LSB, that takes place every month, open to the public and things are getting done.  I can vouch for that, as I am on the Board, newly elected  and lots of good things are about to happen and have happened.  Guess what I am saying is, we have lots to offer here in Port Loring,  so why not put it on your list of places to visit, you will be surprised in what you see.  And when in town, stop in and see my wife and I, we would love to see you. Coffee is always on. Should say here too, if you need more info on our growing community, feel free to get in touch with either my wife or I.   You can reach me here on the Blog or at :   [email protected] or 1 705-757-1640  Take Care, George & Ruth Walters

A Few Words On Things That Plants Depend On & How We Can Learn From Them

You know every once in a while I get to thinking that these so called Pharmaceutical companies are not doing things that are in the public best interest. Now take herbs.  Did you know that herbs have an antibacterial and antiviral properties?  Well they do, especially the ones out in the wild.   Only common sense that they do, as if they didn’t they would be eaten alive by microbes in the soil before they even got to growing.  In saying this, the Pharmaceutical and others say that there is no plant fungi in the world that can act as an antibiotic in our body. Hmm, I wonder where they think mould came from when they got to making penicillin.  My Opinion Only.

HST Just Another Way Of Raising Taxes, Simple As That

The Liberals are not helping anyone or anything in bringing in this HST. It will simply mean that we will be paying higher taxes on hundreds of goods and services, including gasoline, heating fuel, fast food value meals, and legal and other professional fees, well to many to name here in my Blog. Over the years I have come to the conclusion that folks here in Ontario just love being taxed, as they keep on voting in folks that raise them. Some say hey, look at all we have here in Ontario. I say what we got we should have had with out all these high taxes. All that raising taxes does is keep folks working 24/7, no time to think of what is going on around them, that sums it up in a nutshell. They don’t want you to think or become self efficient, they want you to have to depend on them. But if you like working 24/7 and paying these high taxes, well then keep on voting for those type of folks. Just makes me shake my head. My Opinion Only
