“Another beautiful day in Cottage Country”

Good Morning!

And a nice day it is, the sun is shinning for a change with just the occasional cloud floating by. However, temperature wise things has cooled down a lot with it sitting at -2.6 C | 27.32 F getting out of bed.

If you’re driving down Highway 522 thee days, make sure to keep your wits about you. You never know when a deer might decide to play chicken with your bumper, or when a camouflage-clad hunter might pop out of the bushes. It seems to be a battle of wits, instincts, and a dash of luck, and frankly, I’m not sure who’s winning. But hey, at least it makes for some interesting roadside entertainment, right?

Moving on to another topic, yesterday, I spent the day improving my editing skills using some computer programs that I found pretty challenging. But by the end of the day, I did manage to get better at it.

Today, I’m going to continue practising, hoping to make more progress and become even better. And you know, while some may believe that age is a barrier to learning new things, I wholeheartedly disagree. I firmly believe that no matter how old you are, the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and have an enjoyable time doing so is always within reach.

Good Morning!

It’s a touch cloudy waking up here in Cottage country, but the good news is the snow we did have has melted. But I am sure given time it will return for all those that enjoy it. For myself, well … let’s just say I like it, but I enjoy our summers more.

Anyway, you might’ve noticed I haven’t been around lately. The thing is, we had to take our car to the Ford dealer in North Bay. We needed snow tires put on, an oil change, and that damn motor light wouldn’t stop buggin’ us. The folks at the dealership had a good look and found a problem with the fuel pump inside the tank. It had rusted out and needed a new one, which, let me tell ya, cost a pretty penny.

But, we knew it had to be done, so we said “go ahead” and they got to work. Problem was, it took four days ’cause they had to order some special parts. We stayed with our son in North Bay, and we just got back home yesterday afternoon.

On the bright side, we had a great time with our boy, and Mom took the chance to clean up his whole place, do his laundry, and help with a bunch of stuff. To show his appreciation, he treated us to dinner for four nights straight.

Today I am going to get back to work here in my computer as I have some things that need attending and then later on relax and have a drink with my lovely wife. After what we have been through for the past few days, I think we deserve it.

“New day, new beginnings!”

Good Morning!

It’s another cloudy day here in Cottage Country. And it has cooled down some, with the temperature waking up sitting at 1.7 C | 35.06 F. We had to turn on our furnace this morning to warm things up some. But I can’t complain, as we do live in the north, and it is nearing the end of October.

Highway 522 is not too busy these days, but there are some hunters in our area gearing up for the deer hunt starting the first of November.

Yesterday, I did some work in my woodworking shop, and then I used my old chainsaw to cut down a big basswood tree that was growing too close to my house. Normally, I don’t cut down trees like that, but this time it was necessary because there were some nice oak trees growing alongside it. I wanted to keep the oaks, so the basswood had to go.

However, while cutting the tree, I saved some good pieces from its branches. I think I can use these pieces to make beautiful flutes in the future, but I need to let the wood dry a bi. Reason being the wood must retain a touch of moisture, a remnant of its spirit so to speak, to create the melodies that resonate with my heart. In the simplest of terms, the wood must carry a trace of its essence, a whisper of the forest’s breath, to birth a flute of profound beauty.

After finishing with the Basswood Tree, I decided to trim two very old, overgrown apple trees. One of them was a Crab Apple tree, which are rare these days. The other one was a very old Heritage Golden Delicious apple tree. Next spring, I plan to take some branches from the Golden Delicious tree and graft them onto the Crab Apple Tree, just for fun. It should be interesting to see how they grow together.

After that with my lovely wife’s help we cleaned things up and enjoyed a drink or two enjoying the sunshine.

Today I will once again be working here in the house learning more about making these videos.

Mornin’, everyone! Don’t let the grass grow under your feet, but remember to take a moment to enjoy the view.

It’s a nice change in cottage country today. We’ve had a whole week of rain, so the sunny weather is a welcome sight. What’s also good is that it’s not very cold yet. The temperature is around 4.8 degrees Celsius, which is about 40.64 degrees Fahrenheit. Although, I think we might have more clouds than sunshine in the future. But right now, I’d prefer that over rain.

Highway 522 and around town is quiet these days, but it will pick up this weekend with hunting season for deer, with rifles, opens up the first of November and lasts for two weeks. I don’t hunt much anymore, as I just can’t see myself sitting out in the bush where it’s wet and cold. And with the climate changing like it is, the deer in these parts doesn’t start to roam around all that much for another three weeks or so. Which is a good thing for them, if you know what I mean.

On another topic, because it rained all day, I stayed inside and worked on setting up my YouTube Channel. I think I’ve got it pretty much how I want it, but I need to double-check with my son Karl to make sure I did everything right. It’s great to have someone who knows about this stuff. I also really like the laptop he helped me choose. It wasn’t cheap, but it works really well. I like it a lot, especially now that we’ve connected it to the new docking station. Now everything I need is on my laptop, so I can take it with me wherever I go if I have to. I don’t need my big old regular computer anymore. We’ve made a lot of progress in that area, I have to say.

Today I am going to do some work in my old woodworking shop and if things work out I will see about making a video letting you have a look at it. I will see how that goes, I still have a lot to learn with that end of things. But practice makes perfect, I always say.

With that, I am off for an English Muffin with an egg and a generous layer of sharp old cheddar cheese., that my lovely wife is making for me.

“Another day on the homestead.”

So how you all doing this morning? Good I hope.

We had light rain through most of the night, and it is still raining this morning. I have to tell you, I am getting a bit tired of the wet weather. But at least, we don’t have to shovel it, and we aren’t burning that much oil, or burning that much wood to stay warm.

On another note, being that it rained most of the day yesterday, I worked steadily on getting used to this new video equipment I bought with the help of my son Karl. I think I am ready to give it a try, so we will see how that goes as the day moves forward. My problem is I overthink things too much even though I know I shouldn’t ha ha. At any rate, I am making some progress.

I’m also currently in the process of establishing my new YouTube Channel, and let me tell you, it’s not exactly a walk in the park. Nevertheless, I’m making steady progress, and as I mentioned yesterday, once it’s up and running, I’ll be sure to spread the word. I’ve been receiving messages from a bunch of folks expressing their excitement about it. The flip side is that I’m now committed to producing content, but it’s a commitment I’m more than willing to uphold. It’s something I’m genuinely wanting to do, and given my nature, I’m determined to pursue it, as I enjoy new ventures. You might even say it’s what keeps my youthful spirit alive.

So with that I am off for some waffles my lovely wife is making for me this morning and will then see what the day has in store.

“Time to grab your boots and start the day!”

And them boots might come in handy with the rain we are in the midst of this morning. It is also foggy, which sure makes things look mighty dismal out there. But Fall is like that some days, which I found makes me look forward to the sunny days.

Yesterday, since it was rainy outside, I decided to spend some time getting to know my new equipment for making YouTube videos. I was excited to give it a try, but I ran into some issues and had to wait for my son Karl to come home from work. While I waited, I read through the instruction manuals, which helped me understand how to use the equipment better. I must admit, it felt a bit overwhelming to figure everything out at first.

But as I always say, when you see a big pile of tasks, it can be discouraging. However, if you break things down into smaller steps, it becomes more manageable.

Anyway, once Karl got home, he walked me through setting up the equipment. Now that it’s up and running, I plan to test it today and see how it performs, which I find quite interesting.

And it should be noted that I’m just starting out on this YouTube journey, and I want to make sure everyone knows that everything is brand new to me. To all those who’ve inquired, especially my sister Barb up in the snowy landscapes of Saskatchewan, if I’ll have my own YouTube channel, and the answer is yes! Once I have it all set up, I’ll share the link with you so you can watch my videos. But please keep in mind that I’ve never done this before, so there will be a lot of mistakes along the way. I actually think those mistakes will be a part of the videos and…

Let’s just say, you’ll get to see my learning process as I go along. So, I hope you’ll be patient with me as I navigate this new adventure. Thanks for your support!

“Country mornings are the best mornings!”

Starting things off, we are in the midst of some rain here this morning. But here’s the twist – it’s not quite “freezing your socks off” cold just yet, which, to be perfectly honest, suits me just fine. The thermometer this morning read a positively tropical 14.3°C | 57.74°F. We will also see a lot more rain as the day moves forward. But in saying all that, the good news is it isn’t snow. However, my fabulous sister Barb gave me the lowdown from Saskatchewan, and they’re in the icy grip of snow. It’s so cold there that even the snowflakes are bundling up. Now, when I hear that, I know winter is knocking on our door here in the north.

So yesterday I lied, as I didn’t get to my old woodworking shop as planned. Instead, I stayed inside working away here on my computer setting more things up, that will make my life easier when writing up stories, along with doing my Blog, and not to forget my upcoming YouTube Channel. I did however get some new equipment for making my YouTube’s yesterday, delivered to our home, which is one more thing that I have to get used to, and since it is raining today I will see if I can figure things out in that department. All this high-tech stuff is nice, but … it is a challenge getting used to them. But such is life and I have to admit I enjoy trying and doing new things.

With that I am off for an English Muffin with an egg easy over, some cheddar cheese and some bacon laid on for good measure. Just remember, one piece of bacon a day keeps the doctor away… or was it an apple?

“Good morning, world! Make today so awesome that yesterday gets jealous.”

Starting things off here this morning, it is looking like we might get some rain as the skies are dark and dreary, casting a shroud of uncertainty over the day ahead. But if there is one thing I do know, its Mother Nature will do what she wants.

Highway 522 is still quite, this morning and if you’re ever in the mood for a slower pace of life, drop by for a visit, where the traffic is light, the people are friendly, and you’ll never have to worry about road rage. It’s a slice of small-town heaven, I tell ya!

On a different note, I didn’t accomplish much yesterday. I spent most of the day familiarizing myself with my new computer setup and adding some unique programs that will make my work at my desk easier. Today, I’m headed to my woodworking shop to build a new desk for myself and set up another new desk for my lovely wife in her studio. If I manage to get everything I need in time, I might even create a YouTube video showcasing how I craft a one-of-a-kind desk using rough-cut lumber that has been drying in my shed for a few years. I’ll see how it goes, as making these videos is a new endeavor for me, but how challenging can it be, aside from ensuring the camera is in the right spot? The great thing is, I’ll be in the company of friends, right?

So with that I am off for a bowl of oatmeal and will then see what the day has in store other than what I have planned.

Good Morning, everyone!

Starting things off, it should be noted that as the days grow shorter and the leaves begin to fall, there’s a distinct chill in the air that serves as a reminder – winter is steadily approaching. Meanwhile, a frigid front is gathering strength in Alaska and the Yukon Territory, And if that doesn’t give you a shiver of what’s to come, just take a look at what is happening around us in nature, as the birds, plants and trees-they’re all trying to tell us something. One just has to take a few minutes and listen.

Highway 522 is still very quiet, but there are a lot of hunters in the bush lately, so care should be taken if out exploring the area or traveling through it.

On another note, yesterday my lovely wife and I made a trip to North Bay as it was our son’s birthday. While there, we picked up some more supplies and then took him out for lunch at Casey’s there in town. We had a good time, enjoyed our meal along with a bottle of White Zinfandel Wine. I have to say being a farmer for many years and growing all different kinds of grapes, it is one of the best, especially while enjoying a meal. After we finished, we dropped our boy off back at his apartment and headed on home, taking in what nature had to offer. Which was a lot, as the leaves that still remain on the trees were sure putting on a show. The older trees have shed most of theirs, but them young’uns tend to hang on to theirs a mite longer. It’s just the way the young are, always trying to be a different.

Good Morning!

It’s a bit cloudy this morning and we are having some light rain. What I am hoping for is some sunshine, but we will have to see how that works out as the day moves forward.

Highway 522 is slow these days, with only the locals takin’ in every little thing happening around these parts. Makes me scratch my head in wonder sometimes, but they are getting their exercise for the day, which is a good thing.

Switching gears, I couldn’t make it to my woodworking shop yesterday, as I found myself focused on writing stories for the newspapers I write for. In fact, it turned out to be a productive day for writing, and I made significant progress. Some days are like that, where words flow effortlessly like a gentle creek on a warm summer’s day, while on other days, finding the right words can be a bit more challenging.

Today will probably be much the same as yesterday, but as they say, “I never truly know what a day might bring.” Just like navigating the twists and turns of a country road, the only thing a feller can do is go with the flow and make the best of things. Such is life.

Good Morning!

It’s a bit cloudy this morning, but there are a few blue patches trying to show themselves amongst all them clouds. So I suspect we will see some sunshine as the day progresses. Which I am looking forward too as my wife and I are wanting to do some front porch sittin’.

Highway 522 is quiet, which is normal for this time of year.

On another note, my wife and I did do some outside work yesterday. Starting the day off, I brought out my rototiller and tilled up a spot more than what it was; we then both got busy planting our garlic. I have to tell you it gave us a good feeling knowing that we will have an abundant supply next summer. Garlic is one of the best vegetables one can eat, especially when it comes to staying healthy. Also for those that doesn’t know this, it is also a very strong antibiotic and can fix a lot of ailments like strep throat along with other things. It can even ward off bad energy that might be lurking outside your doors, if you’re into that kind of thing. Ha ha.

After we had that planted, I decided to move a couple plants that didn’t like where they were growing, one being a red current bush. So we will see what happens next year. I had a talk to it while I was planting it, telling it had better get to growing and producing some berries. At any rate, Nature has a way of doing things, but I do try and help it out when I can.

Once that was done, we brought over some pieces of pine that I had in the bush using my old mower and trailer. I thought it would make things easier come winter when the snow is blowing and up around your ears. It will save me having to carry it by hand from the bush to my woodworking shop.

Afterward, I spent some time on my computer setting up things, so I can create videos about natural and herbal remedies, farming methods, gardening, woodworking, and other things I’ve learned over the years, including what’s happening daily around our home. Once I get the hang of it, I’ll start posting these videos on YouTube for those who are interested. If you have a moment, I’d like to hear your thoughts on this and if you would be interested in watching how I go about doing things.

With that tidbit of information lingering in your thoughts, I’m heading off to enjoy an English muffin accompanied by a freshly cooked egg and a generous serving of cheddar cheese that my lovely wife has prepared for me.

Good Morning!

It’s a cloudy morning here in Cottage Country, and we could see a shower or two throughout the day. But remember, whether it’s cloudy or clear, a day is what you make of it, just like a country song – you’re the star of your own show.

Highway 522 is slowing down these days. Most of our hunters are either sleeping in or sitting in the bush. It’s a real head-scratcher, that’s for sure!

On another note, I didn’t do all that much yesterday with it being wet and cool outside. I don’t relish the cold all the much anymore, or the dampness for that matter. I did, however, write up a story for my newspaper columns. You might say that a little productivity, even on them lazy, wet days, keeps the wheels turnin’ in this here life of mine.

Today I am thinking I will get some exercise and plant my garlic for next year. But I never really know – you start with the best-laid plans, and Mother Nature, or maybe just my own haphazard ways, leads you down a different road. Which truth be told is what life is all about. And you know … I kind of like it that way.

So with that I am off for a bowl of porridge this morning that my lovely wife is making for me and will then see what develops after that. And maybe I will have another cup of hot chocolate like I did yesterday. I might even add a marshmallow to it as my sister Barb does. She says it is pretty tasty.

Good Morning!

It’s a cool, cloudy, rainy morning here in Cottage Country. But in saying that, we should see some sunshine later on in the day. Which is what is needed as I want to plant next year’s garlic. I like to get it in a week or so before it freezes, as it gives it some time to get established. However, we do need the rain, as the plants and trees need to store up for their long winters nap.

Highway 522: It’s been a bit busy for the past few days with hunters moving into our area in hopes of getting some meat for the table. This will continue until the end of December. After that, things will ease off some, making it, so people can walk through the bush safely. Which my wife and I enjoy doing if we feel up to it. On the other hand, we do get a lot of exercise moving snow from our decks and the neighbors deck, along with our driveway. We just have to ease into it and not go gun hoe in the beginning.

On another note, yesterday I got involved in writing up a couple stories for the newspaper columns I write for, which took most of the day. Unfortunately, we also received some really sad news. My good friend, Kerry Booth, passed away. We shared some incredible moments and had some fantastic chats over the years. I’m really going to miss him. He was truly an exceptional person, to say the least.

With that I am off for an egg on an English Muffin this morning, that my lovely wife is preparing, and just because I can, I think a Hot Chocolate afterward will be in order with a touch of whip cream.
