Black Fly Season Isn’t That Far Off

Black flies are a common pest in Northern Ontario, Canada, and their bites can be very irritating and itchy. While there are many insecticides and repellents available on the market, some people prefer to use natural remedies to deal with these pesky bugs. In this blog post, I will explore some natural remedies to deal with these pesky parasites.

  1. Wear protective clothing

One of the simplest ways to avoid black fly bites is to wear protective clothing. Cover up with long-sleeved shirts, pants, and socks. Choose light-colored clothing to make it easier to spot any black flies that land on you. You can also wear a hat with a wide brim to protect your face and neck.

  1. Use natural insect repellents

There are many natural insect repellents that can help keep black flies away. Essential oils such as citronella, eucalyptus, and lemongrass are effective at repelling insects. Mix a few drops of these oils with a carrier oil such as coconut or olive oil and apply it to your skin before heading outdoors. You can also use natural repellent sprays that contain these ingredients.

  1. Apply apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a natural remedy that can help soothe black fly bites. Dab a small amount of undiluted apple cider vinegar onto the affected area to reduce itching and swelling. Repeat as necessary.

  1. Use aloe vera

Aloe vera is a soothing natural remedy that can help ease the discomfort of black fly bites. Cut open a fresh aloe vera leaf and apply the gel directly to the affected area. Alternatively, you can use aloe vera gel that has been extracted from the plant and stored in a container.

  1. Take a vitamin B supplement Which Helps Immensely

Taking a vitamin B supplement can help repel black flies. Vitamin B1, also known as thiamine, can be particularly effective at keeping these insects at bay. Take a daily supplement or eat foods rich in vitamin B, such as spinach, kale, and legumes.

  1. Avoid peak black fly hours

Black flies are most active during the early morning and late afternoon. Try to avoid being outside during these peak hours if possible. If you must be outdoors, consider wearing protective clothing and using natural repellents.

In conclusion, black flies can be a nuisance, but there are many natural remedies that can help you deal with them. By wearing protective clothing, using natural insect repellents, applying apple cider vinegar and aloe vera, taking a vitamin B supplement, and avoiding peak black fly hours, you can enjoy the outdoors in peace.

The Importance of Sunshine for Your Health in Northern Ontario, Canada

Living in Northern Ontario, Canada, can be an incredible experience. The vast wilderness, beautiful landscapes, and fresh air are just a few of the reasons why so many people choose to call this place home. However, with the long, cold winters and short days, it can also be challenging to get enough sunshine. This lack of sunshine can have a significant impact on your health and well-being. In this post, I will explore the importance of sunshine for your health and how you can ensure you’re getting enough of it, even in the depths of winter.

Why is Sunshine Important for Your Health?

Sunshine is crucial for your health because it’s the primary source of Vitamin D. This vitamin is essential for a range of bodily functions, including bone health, immune function, and mental health. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to a host of health problems, including osteoporosis, depression, and even cancer.

But why is it so challenging to get enough sunshine in Northern Ontario? The answer lies in the tilt of the earth’s axis. During the winter months, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, which means that the sun’s rays hit the earth at a shallower angle. This results in fewer hours of daylight and weaker sunlight.

How to Get Enough Sunshine in Northern Ontario

Getting enough sunshine in Northern Ontario can be challenging, but it’s not impossible. Here are some tips to help you get the vitamin D you need, even in the depths of winter:

  1. Get outside during the day: Even if it’s cold, make sure you get outside during the day. The sun’s rays can still provide some vitamin D, even when it’s cloudy. Bundle up and take a walk, snowshoe, or ski. You’ll not only get some sunshine, but you’ll also get some exercise and fresh air.
  2. Eat foods rich in vitamin D: while sunshine is the best source of vitamin D, you can also get it from food. Fatty fish like salmon and tuna, egg yolks, and fortified milk and cereals are all good sources of vitamin D.

In Conclusion

Sunshine is critical for your health, and getting enough of it can be a challenge in Northern Ontario, Canada, or anywhere for that matter. However, by taking a few simple steps, you can ensure you’re getting the Vitamin D you need, even during the long, cold winter months. So, get outside, and eat foods rich in vitamin D. Your body will thank you.

Good Morning!

It’s another nice morning here, waking up. The sun is shinning, and the temperature is starting to climb. However, this will be the last day of our summer like weather, as tomorrow things will cool down considerably, and late tomorrow night we could see some more of the white stuff. So as I said yesterday, if you have some outside work that needs attending, then this is the day to look after it. My wife and I have been steadily working away on our lawns and gardens, getting them cleaned up. Yesterday I did manage to roll our lawn, while my wife worked away raking leaves, along with other things. It took us most of the day. After we were finished, we were sure tired, and both our bodies ached in parts that we didn’t know existed. Today my wife and I should be able to finish things up as to where it looks nice, and our plants are able to show off in a few weeks. After winter, there is always a lot that needs to be done. Although the work may be physically painful, it prepares us for what is ahead. At least that is what we keep on telling ourselves. Ha ha.

With that, not much else going on around our town, other than a lot more people moving about, and we have noticed a few campers moving into our area. I am thinking they might have been better waiting another week. But everyone has their own way of doing things.

Have a great day. Great Day! Enjoy it while you can.

It’s time to break out the lawn roller.

Rolling your lawn in the spring is an essential task that should not be overlooked if you want to have a healthy and lush lawn. Rolling can help to even out the surface of your lawn, which not only improves its appearance, but also has several other benefits. In this blog post, i’ll explore why rolling your lawn in the spring is so important and how you can do it effectively.

First off, rolling your lawn in the spring helps to level out any bumps and uneven spots that may have developed over the winter months. These bumps can be caused by several factors, including freezing and thawing, soil settling, and foot traffic. By rolling your lawn, you can smooth out these bumps and create a more even surface, which is not only looks nice, but also makes it easier to mow your lawn.

Secondly, rolling your lawn can help to improve soil compaction. Compacted soil can be a major problem for lawns, as it restricts the growth of grassroots and can lead to waterlogging and other issues. By rolling your lawn, you can help to break up compacted soil and create a looser, more aerated soil structure that promotes healthy grass growth.

Thirdly, rolling your lawn in the spring can also help to prepare your lawn for seeding. If you plan on over seeding your lawn in the spring, rolling can help to create a smooth surface for the new grass seed to take root. This can improve seed-to-soil contact, which is essential for successful germination and growth.

So, how do you roll your lawn effectively? The first step is to wait until the soil has dried out enough to support the weight of the roller without causing damage to the grass. Then, simply use a lawn roller filled with water or sand to roll over your lawn in a crisscross pattern, covering the entire surface. Avoid rolling over the same spot more than once, as this can lead to over compaction.

In conclusion, rolling your lawn in the spring is an important task that should not be ignored. By leveling out bumps, improving soil compaction, and preparing your lawn for seeding, rolling can help to promote healthy grass growth and improve the appearance of your lawn. So, grab your lawn roller and get to work – your lawn will thank you!

Good Morning!

So how you all doing on this fine looking Saturday? Good I hope. For my wife and i we are doing okay these days. We have also been taking the time to enjoy the nice weather that has been upon us for the past week. Pretty well all of our snow has left us and as hard as it to believe the grass is turning green quite rapidly. We have also noticed a lot of our summer song birds have returned. Including the Robbins. The proverb states that if the first Robbin you see at the start of the year is sitting on the ground, the year will be successful. And I found that to be true over the years. As long as there are a few of us old timers around, old beliefs will always exist. Some people, however, believe that a good year will come if the first Robbin you see is sitting up high, but the truth is … that belief has fallen out of favour over time, for a number of reasons that I won’t get into this morning.

On another note, my lovely wife and I have been real busy working outside, cleaning things up around our property for the past few days, and today we will do the same, but not as much, as I kind of think we overdid it yesterday a wee bit. The weather has sure been nice, and no one can complain about that.

So with that I am off for some pancakes with a touch of Maple Syrup and will then …. hmm maybe, I will roll our lawn this morning before the ground gets too hard. It sure helps, especially for walking, not to forget that the rolling pushes all the roots back in place where they should be, which in turn makes for a really nice looking lawn all summer long. And it also makes it nicer to mow.

Have a great day and stay safe. GW

Good Morning!

And a fine morning it is. The sun is shinning, and it’s beginning to warm up nicely. We will be having three more days of summer weather before it starts to cool back down. So if you have things that need attending outside, today and the weekend is the time to be doing them. Pretty well all of our snow has left us, but there is a wee bit on the north side of things.

Yesterday, as the day before, my lovely wife and I have been steadily working outside trimming a few trees along with doing some raking. Today we will do the same. My wife loves her gardens. We did however take some time to relax in the sun and will do so once again today. We try and take advantage of any nice weather that is sent our way.

The grass is also starting to turn green, which is nice to see, and the Finches have returned for another year. We did buy a bag of Finch food while in town the other day. But I am not sure if it is any good, as the birds don’t seem to like it. Could be that it is too old. Par for the course these days, as everything you buy is far from being what it was like years ago. My wife and I do get a lot of enjoyment watching them throughout the year.

On another note, we have also noticed the buds starting on top of the Maple trees, so it won’t be long before we start to see the spring colours. They are as nice as the fall if you take the time to notice.

Other than that, not much going on in and around our small town. It’s not as it used to be, where everyone knew everyone. Now when you go to the store, nobody even says hello to you, other than from a few old timers. Progress is what they refer it to. Ha ha. But to be fair, there are a lot of newcomers to the area who don’t really know anyone, and coming from a city life, haven’t had much time to adjust to the rural way of life. Let’s hope they do, but I fear the majority won’t, given how much Canada has changed from its former self. Not entirely for the better, either, in my opinion.

With that, I am off for a bowl of cereal and will then see what the day has in store. Life is always a mystery.

Have a great day and stay safe. GW

How some of us northerners mark obstacles in and around our lakes and rivers. It gets your attention real quick, I grant them that.

Good Morning!

And it is a good morning, with the sunshine shinning down upon us and the temperature being like summer. And it will get a lot warmer as the day moves forward; and on Saturday it will become downright hot, with the temperature getting up to 82F/26C. Not complaining mind ya! But as I said, early next week things will start to cool back down to where a person will need to wear a jacket once again. And the cool weather will probably remain with us till May. But in saying that we do live in the north, so it is to be expected.

On another note, being so nice and needing a few things, my lovely wife and I decided to go to Powassan, a town that has a large grocery store about an hour from our home. The trip in was very nice weather wise. Today I will see about finishing up some outside work that needs attending, and after that we both might do some front porch sitting, taking in the much-needed sunshine which keeps us humans healthy. There again, our Powers That Be have manipulated our human brains to believe the sunshine is bad for us. At least for a lot of people, but there are a select few that can’t be swayed.

With that, I am off for a bowl of cereal this morning and pieced of toast. Have a great day. GW

What’s Happening on April 12/2023

I have found over the years being a farmer when it comes to our Powers That Be and a few others, that …….

Good Morning!

It’s a sunny morning here for a change and the temperature has risen a bit through the night with it sitting at 2.6 C | 36.68 F. Yea I know, it is still a touch cool, but that will be short-lived as the temperature will climb today to where it will feel like summer. Which is fine with me as I am ready to see green for a change other than white. Highway 522 is bare and dry this morning, which once again will make travelling good.

On another note, my lovely wife and I worked outside for most of the day cleaning out our lean-to where we store things in it for winter, and now it is ready for some firewood. We built it in a great location as the sun can beat on the wood in the morning and afternoon. We pile green wood in it in the spring and in the fall it is ready to burn. Can’t beat that. And with the price of oil, it makes it just that much better. Still amazes me how the Powers that be, have blinded most humans into believing things that aren’t true. Here in Canada they want us to switch from oil, propane, wood and gas to electric. What a joke that is. First off … we don’t have the capability of creating enough electricity to handle things if everyone did switch. Next, it is okay for us to sell our Coal and oil to other countries for a substantial amount of money on one hand, but on the other hand they don’t want us here at home to use it. The thing is, we here in Canada are a drop in the bucket compared to what other countries are using when it comes to these fossil fuels.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am all for helping Mother Nature, but there are ways we can make what we have now safe to use. We have the technology. It’s just a few that want their name up in lights. Well, they will get that, I guarantee it. These other countries are saying. Oh, my yes you’re right not using these resources that you have, in the meantime they are buying all they can get. Yes, it is a strange and amazing world, how easily human minds can be manipulated.

Okay, enough of that, I have had my rant for the day. Ha ha, On a better subject, I am off for some Waffles topped with a bit of Mike Clapperton’s World Best Maple Syrup. It is tasty! He won that title a few years back. Nice fellow too.

Have a great day. GW

Broccoli

Here’s a blog post I put together about growing, planting broccoli and the health benefits it has.

Broccoli is a nutritious and versatile vegetable that is easy to grow and can provide a wealth of health benefits. With a little bit of knowledge and some simple gardening techniques, anyone can grow this nutritious plant in their own backyard. In this post, I will cover how to grow and plant broccoli, as well as some of the health benefits it can offer.

Growing Broccoli

Broccoli is a cool-season crop, which means it prefers to grow in temperatures between 60 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes it an ideal vegetable to grow in the spring and fall months. Which I will be doing a bit later on. Still too cold where we live. It is also a relatively low-maintenance plant, making it a great choice for beginner gardeners.

To start, select a sunny spot in your garden with well-drained soil. Broccoli prefers slightly acidic soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. Prepare the soil by tilling it to a depth of at least six inches, and mix in some compost or aged manure to add nutrients.

Next, plant your broccoli seeds or seedlings about 18 to 24 inches apart, with rows spaced about two to three feet apart. Be sure to plant them at the same depth they were in their original containers. Water them regularly and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.

As your broccoli grows, it will form a large central head surrounded by smaller side shoots. When the central head reaches a size of about four to six inches in diameter, it is ready to be harvested. Cut it off with a sharp knife, leaving at least an inch of stem attached to the plant. This will encourage the side shoots to develop.

Health Benefits of Broccoli

Broccoli is a nutritional powerhouse, packed with vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial compounds. Here are just a few of the health benefits it can offer:

  1. Nutrient-dense: Broccoli is a great source of vitamins C and K, as well as folate, potassium, and fiber.
  2. Antioxidant-rich: Broccoli contains a variety of antioxidants, including Sulforaphane, which has been shown to have anti-cancer properties.
  3. Anti-inflammatory: Broccoli contains compounds that can help reduce inflammation in the body, which is linked to a variety of chronic diseases.
  4. Immune-boosting: The vitamin C in broccoli can help support a healthy immune system.
  5. Heart-healthy: The fiber and potassium in broccoli can help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease.

Conclusion

Broccoli is a delicious and nutritious vegetable that is easy to grow and can provide a wide range of health benefits. By following a few simple gardening techniques, anyone can grow this versatile plant in their own backyard. Whether you enjoy it steamed, roasted, or raw, incorporating broccoli into your diet can help support a healthy body and mind.

Good Morning!

It’s a bit cloudy this morning, but on the bright side, it is a lot warmer than it has been, with it sitting at 6.9 C | 44.42 F. And it will warm up even more as the day progresses; and along with that the sunshine will return which will make it even nicer. Highway 522 that runs through our small town is bare and dry, which will make travelling very good today. Actually, travelling will be good all week, being that we are in for some summer weather starting today, and it will continue until Monday of next week. Then, however, things will cool back down some for a few days. So knowing that, if you have some outside work that needs doing, this is the time to be out there. Which my wife and I are planning on doing.

On another note, my lovely wife and I didn’t do all that much yesterday, or I should say I. didn’t. My wife however was busy cleaning the house, and doing the wash, seems the old saying a woman’s work is never done is so true. She is a worker, that one. This morning I woke up to her watering her plants, and she has a lot of them, let me tell you. If I built a green house, she would be able to fill it. The reason we have so many is they keep our air in the house fresh and clean all winter long, not to forget how nice they look.

With that, I am off for a bite to eat and will then head on outside. Just Because I Can!

Have a great day and stay safe. There is still a lot of sickness around. Even now, my wife and I still exercise care while entering crowded stores, or around a lot of people. It’s far better, in our opinion, than becoming ill. Others are free to do whatever they like.

What’s Happening On April 10/2023

Good Morning!

Starting things off, I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. My wife and I did, with two of our sons dropping by for a couple of days. Which turned out nice, other than the weather being a touch cool. But the cold weather is about to lose its hold on us as, things are going to warm up a lot for the next week or so. We could see temperatures nearing the weekend, hovering around the 23C/75F mark. By the end of the week, our snow will be all gone and things should start to dry up. Highway 522 is bare and dry this morning, which will make travelling good for those heading back home, or having to pick up some groceries in the big cities. For my wife and I we’re okay with some leftovers from our turkey dinner on the weekend. I sometimes think that the second turkey dinner, using what was left over, tastes better than the initial meal itself. It could just be me.

On another note, yesterday and the day before with the family being here, I didn’t get much done other than a lot of talking. I did however get my new laptop and phone all sorted out that one of my sons gave me. It took them most of a day to get things all set up. But I should be all set now for another few years. My old phone gave up the ghost awhile back, loosing its sound. So a phone that you can’t hear ring isn’t all that good. Ha ha. And a laptop that is almost extinct isn’t all that good neither, or so my sons say. So knowing that, they got me another one. I have to tell you, it sure is nice, and will be even nicer for when we go on trips, as will be the new phone. It sure is nice having boys that know all there is to know, about these things, Ha ha.
All in all, we had a great weekend with every one getting together.

With that, I am off for a bite to eat that my lovely wife is making for me, and will then see what the day has in store. For sure, we will do some front porch sittin’ later on, breathing in some of our fresh northern air. Once it warms up some.

Good Morning!

For a change, we are having some sunshine waking up. However, it is still quite cool, with the temperature sitting at -4.5 C | 23.9 F. It will warm up as the day moves forward; and it will get even warmer after today, with the temperature getting up to near 68F/20C for a few days. That should get rid of what snow we have left. Which is fine with my wife and I, as we are looking forward to some front porch sittin’. Highway 522 is bare and dry this morning, which will make travelling good for those having to go anywhere, and I suspect a lot of folks will be travelling, being a holiday weekend.

Other than that, not much happening in and around our small community these days. But once the warmer weather moves in, so will the tourists, which will make the business’s happy. For my wife and I we take things as they come to us, one day at a time.

With that I am off for a bowl of shredded wheat and a piece of toast, that my lovely wife is putting together for me, and will then see what the day has in store.
Have a great day!
